The house of Traigh Bhan was built in 1923, originally as a holiday home. However, its significance changed in the early 1960s the sanctuary, shown here, was set up at the house by Jessica Ferreira and Lucy Bruce of Griannan to anchor the Isle of Iona as a Centre of Light. Later, after making contact with Peter and Findhorn during the 1960s, Jessica Ferreira transferred the property of Traigh Bhan as a gift (free of charge) to The Findhorn Foundation in 1972. . . “Tehidy Woods to Portreath” circular walk . Today we did a lovely walk from Tehidy Woods to Portreath & back. It was a blowy Easterly wind up to 42mph but as always we seemed to mostly avoid the buffeting. We loved exploring different sorts of landscapes en route, as well as dramatic sea cliffs and isolated beaches. We stopped for lunch in Portreath before enjoying lush, near exotic woodland on the way back. Four words Stegastein, sunset, Norway and magic. Four words is all I need for a gorgeous photo. The sun went down at 10pm. At 8/9pm the skies were clouded and it did not seem like the sunset would be worth driving up the mountain for. At 9.30pm the sky started to turn a bit yellowish, still it was a gamble to drive up the mountain. I did not know if a gorgeous sunset would await me. But as we drove up the mountain the sky got more collors every second. It was so worth it. What is your favourite sunset? Yewbarrow is lower than Scafell Pike but the view was 👌 below you can see Waswater, the deepest lake in England, our campsite, which is the green triangle of trees in the valley, and above is Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. I was worried after Tala’s quite slow climb of Scafell Pike that she was finally starting to show her age but the next day she was happily scrambling and running around on Yewbarrow like a young pup so I think it was just the cold and strong wind that was putting her off. Reposted from @barefoot_photographer Autumn Waves 🍂 A different perspective on our Waved Heath; now showing her beautiful autumn colours. 🍂 The waves arent just found in the sea here, we have them on the land too!? 🍂 Most are used to seeing the Waved Heath in her Green Spring flecked with yellow (unflowering Heather, Lichens & Tormentil) or Purple and Pink (Ling & Bell Heather) Summer clothes. But this time of year she dons her browns and oranges as the many flowering heathland plants go to seed and sleep for another year. 🍂 Scillys harsh maritime environment has led to the development of many areas of Waved Heath; where the edge of the Heather exposed to our prevailing wind appears dead, with exposed roots and bare ground. The plants concentrating their growing efforts on the more sheltered side. 🍂 We are incredibly lucky here in Scilly to have vast expanses of Waved Heath across all of our Islands. Did you know as a habitat its rarer than rainforest?! 🍂 @ScillyWildlife, amongst many other things, work to protect these ares, many of which are SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest). Наверное, нам повезло, что мы попали в бухту Тасовая при очень неспокойно погоде. Огромные, невероятного цвета волны и рокочущий звук перекатывающихся камней - очень жаль, что фото не могут передать запахи и звуки моря🌊. Даже не верится, что эта бухта может быть тихой, спокойной и ласковой⛱️ Сюда легко добраться из посёлка Преображение, до спуска к пляжу проедет даже легковушка. В самой бухте можно запросто провести целый день - она достаточно большая. Также интересно будет прогуляться по сопкам вдоль береговой линии, виды оттуда открываются просто потрясающие! Hope youve all got that #FridayFeeling! Were really enjoying our wee virtual tour of Harris, our island of the week, and today our island correspondent Amanda (@asapoth) tells us about some of her favourite walks on the island: ⠀ Although Luskentyre and Seilebost beaches are truly gorgeous, I really enjoy the coastal path in Northton. It covers an area of Special Scientific Interest and is full of incredible flowers. ⠀ Looking to the left you see the open Atlantic and then to the right is the salt marsh. There are also wonderful examples of lazy beds - the old system of agriculture that prevailed here used by generations of crofters where the land is made into raised strips with seaweed and turf to provide a drier, more nutrient rich growing area. ⠀ If you walk for about 30 minutes you reach the Temple, an old, ruined place of worship dating back to the bronze age. There are other hidden gems too - there is a lovely gentle walk from Borrisdale to Rodel - I always really enjoy it, its short enough for a quick walk but stunning nonetheless. A slow drive through Quidinish stopping by the old coin operated binoculars reveals hordes of seals perching on improbably small rocks in the sea. Another great route is the old postmans walk to Rhenigidale. Its a stunning walk and a reminder of how dedicated the postman was who delivered the mail on foot before the road was built. #staycation, Kerry ireland, well you totally rocked!💕💥🥳 . too brief but absolutely lush! . The bestest of company a woman could ask for adventuring with 💕💕... the views .. the insane hiking .. wild swimming with the Last castle that fell to Cromwell (its an Irish History thing ..🤣) as your back drop.. sampling local gins, and the bestest of food .. #perfect!💥😁 . I left ireland for uni in England when I was 18; desperate for adventure, travel,new sights to see and new people to meet . . If I wasn’t at uni I was off; adventuring/working in new lands .. globe trotting to as many exotic spots as possible . . I always have had a sense of urgency that life and been a “serious doctor “ was gonna stop all this adventuring and I needed to pack in as much as I could .. as quickly as I could ..whenever possible 🤣🤣 . Uni finished .. but the thirst for travelling . didn’t ... so I didn’t either!... 🤷‍♀️ . Infact , It’s taken Covid to stop me looking for adventure and thrills around the globe .. but to focus more closely to home. . . This past week, I’ve finally been allowed to announce a book deal that I got more than a year ago. It’s made me reflect on how much of being a writer hinges on waiting—to reach the end of the story you’re writing, to receive feedback from beta readers, to find an agent who believes in you enough to offer rep, to score a publisher who likes your manuscript enough to send a contract. By this reckoning, you’d think to be a writer, you must have patience. . I don’t. In fact, my friends often tease me for just how *impatient* I am. So which quality is it a writer should possess, if they are to weather the storm of waiting? Many literary circles have dubbed it endurance. Writing is a marathon, they tell us, not a sprint. And they’re absolutely right, of course. It could take years to finish honing your manuscript into a respectable state. If you’re seeking publication and manage to get a contract one day, it typically takes another 18-24 months before your book is released. And even then, more waiting—for people to discover the book, to read it and perhaps enjoy it enough to recommend it to others. For word of mouth to spread and for hoping, fiercely hoping, that word of mouth is positive. . Still, there’s an emotional requisite to riding out this waiting, one I’m not sure the word endurance captures sufficiently. Merriam Webster defines endurance as “the ability to withstand hardship or adversity.” To withstand—there’s something vaguely passive about that concept, isn’t there? To outlast the things happening to you. It’s admirable for sure, but writers don’t just tolerate challenges as they arise. They see them coming in advance and choose to meet them anyway. . Perhaps, then, the quality I’m searching for is grit. Grit is a “firmness of mind or spirit: unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.” It’s endurance, yes, the capacity to outlast different obstacles in your path. But it’s also determination. An active will to register the obstacles and choose to not let them defeat you. Someone with grit is not only able to endure long delays and inevitable setbacks, but resolutely dedicated to overcoming them. . The team cleared around twenty-five bags of bruck plus masses of fishing floats, larger bits of plastic, rope and huge pieces of net that needed sawing up in order to shift! This is a particularly attractive beach for bruck due to the tides and shape of the bay, but it is difficult to clean up as there is a 2km walk on rough and steep terrain to reach it, let alone bring it back for disposal. A massive thank you to everyone who volunteered, the committees at Unstfest and Shetland Nature Festival, the brilliant landowners who are removing the bruck from Woodwick by quad and trailer over the next couple of days, and @shetlandheritage for taking the bruck out of Unst for disposal with SIC.
