And that’s a Wrap!! 5.5 years ago I plucked up the courage to work on a film for free and stayed in an abandoned pub for a couple of months - was my very first job in film. On the first night, everyone left and I was just locking up and there was a knock on the door and the director was there with a case of beers ‘thought you might want a drink’ and a friendship was thusly formed. Now I’ve just completed his next film as 1st AD and I’m immensely proud to have been asked to take part. Was my first 1m+ feature with many a fight/shootout/flamethrower so was a bit nervous, but turns out working next to one of your best mates can go very well sometimes - @jkermack thanks for everything, you’re an amazing director and an amazing friend, will always be in debt to you for giving me my first opportunity and now my latest, I wouldn’t have a career without you. Thanks for having faith in me and not being too annoying on the radio. It was a pleasure to work alongside director Cynthia Abbott of @everysecondbreathproject to shoot and edit this film. . Dick is soft spoken and kind. He’s made a living as a fisherman in Bodega Bay for 55 years and, for him, the ocean is home. We’ve learned so much from our time aboard his boat and we admire the way he navigates the complexities of caring for and protecting the ocean while continuing to support his fishing community. But the article text underlines that a bit more:⠀ ⠀ The films, as the historian Elizabeth Hinton (no relation) notes, show what organizing and activism looked like on a granular level, and upend some of the popular narratives of Black nationalism, revealing the joy and energy of the movement that in many ways gets left out of our understandings of this period. In one scene, Hinton films inside a Black independent school, where young people recite the alphabet, with each letter corresponding to a word related to racial justice, and begin the class with a pledge, their voices ringing out, I am Black! “Ours” a project I worked on earlier this year commissioned by @rhizomedotorg launched today on the @newmuseum website. “The project takes the form of a corporate website for Ours, an outdoor brand that mobilizes conceptions of nature, the pastoral, freedom, and most of all America, as products and a lifestyle that are reserved for a privileged class. Images of campers and bikers enjoying pristine natural landscapes give way to calls to action for a “Malthusian Initiative,” inviting outdoor enthusiasts to become “activists” in an apparently genocidal effort to reduce the Earth’s population. In form and method, Ours recalls culture jamming and tactical media–kinds of artistic critique more popular in an earlier era of the internet–in order to defamiliarize and unpack the potent and dangerous ideological maneuvers that hide in plain sight in mainstream culture. The language of Ours is itself only slightly more extreme than its present day counterparts, highlighting the latent potential for extremism in ostensibly progressive green capitalist ideologies.” Link with website and accompanying essay in bio. For the past two months I’ve been locked in my edit bay working on COURAGE TO QUESTION, a 4-part VR series for @google & @unwomen in honor of International Women’s Day. The films premiered last Friday at the UN Headquarters and are now on exhibit in the lobby of the UN building in NYC. They’re also on YouTube, including the full length trailer! . Wowee! This past weekend we took home the award for Best Student Shortwork at the @whisfilmfest! This is an insane and unexpected win for us! Our film New Washing Machine, was screened alongside some really excellent films in our block, each made by students from VFS, UBC, SFU, Capilano U and Emily Carr! Many of these schools have dedicated film programs with tons of camera and gear support as well as professional industry training! This is why it’s so insane that our film, a project made during my time at @ufvsoca, which does not (yet) have a film program, won the award! What @ufvsoca has going for it are some truly excellent professors that pushed me to bend the rules and make films and study filmmaking within a traditional fine arts program! @directormelanie was the first one to inspire me but there were so many others: @brenda.fredrick, Grace Tsuramaru, @shelley.stefan, Tersuomi Anzai, and Geoff Carr to name a few! INSPIRATION: I finally had a moment to watch this documentary film titled “The Black Godfather.” Clarence Avant is the Jedi Master of deal making, teacher, mentor and advocate for Black creatives and executives. He was behind some of the most pivotal movements in entertainment and political history. But for me, the deeper message in the film is the gift of sharing knowledge and educating each other on how to play the game. And the importance of being a good human being with character and the power of friendship and ally ship. How time flies! This time last year my team and I were prepping to premiere our VR documentary #daughtersofchibok at the #venicefilmfestival. Just the thought of going to Venice was enough reward for us...but God had more in store for us!! We made history as the first Africans to win the Venice Lion, and #daughtersofchibok has gone from Venice, to Berlin, Cannes, and scores of other festivals across the globe, winning multiple awards and special mentions, including being listed on the Forbes List of Top 50 VR Experiences of 2019. More importantly though, this groundbreaking film has brought significant change to Chibok. Through this film, @stephbusari made it possible for a Chibok mother to visit New York, where she met with leaders at the United Nations general assembly, Damilola Ogunbiyi made it possible for 120 homes in Chibok to be powered with solar energy, and through the support of @timreidsr and others at home and abroad, scores of Chibok women have received support to procure materials and improve their farming. Daughters of Chibok has proven to us that VR can move people from empathy to action! Today I’m pleased to announce that in celebration of the World Humanitarian Day, Daughters of Chibok will now be available on Oculus TV. Im extremely honored to announce that a film I directed last year, The Water Walker will make its world premiere at TIFF 2020!! @tiff_net HUGE thank you for including us in this years festival. Our short doc is a documentary-animation hybrid that traces the roots, passion, and perseverance of leading Indigenous youth climate activist, @autumn.peltier. The Water Walker documents Autumn’s journey to New York City as she prepares to speak in front of the United Nations, and delivers a powerful message for the future of her community and our planet. When writer/ producer @steviesalasofficial brought me on to the project I knew it would be something special, and in the time since weve filmed its been amazing to see Autumns star continue to rise in the climate movement. Thank you, @autumn.peltier, @stefpeltz , and @christi_belcourt for trusting me with your story and your art! The film was also narrated by the icon Graham Greene- very cool to work with a living legend in this process.
