(Continued from Yesterday) There were three boats headed out to the private island where the kids (in the picture/swipe) would be bought, two boats full of kids, and another boat with traffickers and @timballard89 (undercover of course). I’ll spare you the details of the operation, other than to say that the kids knew exactly what was supposed to happen on the island. They had been through this before. Imagine, if you can, the lowness of an existence where you are bought and sold- enslaved. On one of the boats prior to launching, one of the older girls (probably 15 years-old) gathered in a group of kids and they prayed aloud. We got to the island, the kids got off the boat, they were ushered into a big room where they were to wait. They waited for an hour or so while the traffickers, being secretly recorded, talked themselves into an indefensible case. When the Colombian SWAT teams emerged from the bushes and took everyone down at gunpoint, the kids were still in the room. They had a little window and were able to see what was happening. Once the real traffickers were taken away on Police boats, we were uncuffed and quickly ushered to our boat to get out of there. But as we were boarding the boat cries, laughter, and cheers, rang out from where the kids were… one of the Colombian aftercare workers told them what had happened and that they were now freed. Here’s the point, even though their captors were gone, these kids still face a long road to recovery and trust. Many of them were going back to bad home situations and poverty. So why the joyful cries? It’s because the nature of joy isn’t in a destination, it’s in movement. It’s how a cancer survivor finds joy in signs of remission even after chemo has ravaged her body. It’s how a starving village finds joy in a little bit of rain. Joy is found in moving from any condition to a righteously better one.
