Alumna Tiffany Brown, #CAU 05 brings southern charm to NYFW. Tiffany Brown Designs hailing out of Georgia is one of quite a few Black designers to seen on the NYFW Spring Summer 2021 schedule. After several outspoken industry heads spoke out about the lack of Black designers at NYFW, it is a relief to see some new faces. Let us continue to push on. Tiffany Brown brought a bit of that classic southern charm to our New York city streets. The collection featured two iconic colors: pink and green or more specifically Salmon Pink and Apple Green considering CEO and designer Tiffany is an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA). Making their NYFW debut, Tiffany Brown designs featured simplistic yet eye-catching designs. Collection standouts are: This pale pink cardigan paired with forest green Bermuda shorts. A cozy yet chic outfit that can definitely be unisex. This tulle skirt that appears to have a jumpsuit underneath. As a newcomer, Tiffany Brown Designs are able to tell their story in their designs. The moment of truth! And yes, this first photo is taken in my apartment by @tmoromisato . While I haven’t done all the finishing touches, I am pretty proud of what this space has turned into. After constant headaches with the strata, complications due to Covid-19, and endless problems along the way, I have now forged a home that is entirely my own. The comfort of a safe, beautiful home is not lost on me. I have spent the last 4 years living in various versions of squalor, including apartments with no heating, no window, no door, various pests, and unsafe roommates. To now live in a place where I feel safe, creative, and inspired, is blissful. Thank you @danielgmeloche for the help with the initial design input, and to all the other friends who helped me make endless design decisions along the way— in the end, I learned to really trust my design gut and instincts! The Himba people are a semi-nomadic people who breed cattle and goats.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The women tend to do more labor-intensive work such as carrying water to the village, building homes and milking cows. Whereas the men handle more of the political tasks and legal trials, which also make them the leaders.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ Their homes are simple, cone-shaped structures bound together with palm leaves and mud. In the Himba culture a sign of wealth is the cattle you had owned during your lifetime, which is later on represented by the horns on your grave.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba women are famous for rubbing their bodies with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre (an iron-rich rock), believed to protect their skins against the harsh climate. The red mixture is said to symbolize earths rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life.⠀ ⠀ •⠀ ⠀ The Himba worship their ancestors and the god Mukuru. Often times, the ancestors act as Mukurus representatives. Their homes are surrounded by an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and their livestock, both are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship. The fire represents ancestral protection and the livestock allows for proper relations between human and ancestor.
