Spring Break powraca! Najważniejszy polski festiwal showcase’owy w wyjątkowej odsłonie potrwa od 19 września do 24 października. Ponad 20 wydarzeń w całym Poznaniu, na przestrzeni dwóch miesięcy. Tak w skrócie zapowiada się program wyjątkowej – jak wszystko w tym roku – odsłony Spring Breaka. - Festiwal nie ma szansy odbyć się w dotychczasowej trzydniowej formule. Wybraliśmy wariant hybrydowy: koncerty odbywać się będą dwa- trzy razy w tygodniu i będą dostępne zarówno online, jaki dla dozwolonej liczby widzów na żywo. Here is a new take on our “How not to Write a Press Release” series. Saturday 19th September 2020, annus horribilis, Eva Marisaldi and Stefano Arienti, two delicate champions of their generation, will hold the umpteenth show in our gallery. Umpteenth because they have held many ─not too many, but enough to give us a precise idea of their respective work. Work that becomes more and more incisive with the passing of time, a chromatic transition from youth to a maturity that once seemed so far away, and yet is so manifest today. Personal maturity sometimes coincides with artistic maturity, and work which used to appear difficult to understand gradually becomes more clear-cut. Massimo Minini New works by Stefano Arienti are placed in dialogue with historicized works by Eva Marisaldi. Some of these, exhibited in her latest solo exhibition at PAC in Milan in 2018. Two artists who deal with very different themes and who have diametrically opposed formal results, but belonging to a well-defined group of artists active in Italy since the 90s and with whom Massimo Minini has collaborated since the beginning. Minimalistic geometry and organic textures are the keywords for this one. These are her insight words about this circle: The basic aesthetic element is the point. A line is created from several points. The line is a main element in my interpretation for the IO-Artcircle. The lines, which at first represent pure 2D objects, bend into three-dimensional structures. The second main element of the 10 artworks are different abstracted textures. The structures hide the textures, but the underlying elements are revealed through punched out floating discs. This week in Erased Tapes Rewinder: #NilsFrahm looks back at the rather unusual way of composing he used to score the movie Victoria.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ “It took me some time to finally write music for a film, as I was patiently waiting for a movie that would truly speak to me. When director Sebastian Schipper invited me to work on Victoria, I knew it was worth the long wait. Does such a strong film even need music? I realised it wouldn’t be easy to create a score that embraces these bold pictures.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Luckily we were given unusual creative freedom by approaching the movie together with Sebastian Schipper, who was keeping the production and direction to one single team. The score was recorded in a special location, the former GDR broadcasting production facilities that today host Studio P4. We simply put a big screen in the middle of the room, filled it with microphones and instruments, set the movie on loop and kept improvising on top of it together – my good friends and I.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The guest musicians started their recording session by playing a cohesive take over the course of the whole movie. This was the most interesting part of the day, since they hadn’t seen the film before. They became spectators and creators at once, intuitively recording hundreds of different cues that way. Ke’oni Hanalei is an alchemist, Hawaiian Cultural Practitioner and founder of Pohala Botanicals in Kula, Maui, Hawaii. Ke’oni comes from a long line of medicine holders called Kahuna in Hawaii. Some years back I went through the agony of divorce and during that raw moment in my life - when I left my home in Europe of nearly 15 years to return to the Midwest - I recorded this music. With the help of my friends, I am able to share this - thank you. Artwork is by Scott Lunny, every single song is here. Mixed by Justin Vernon. Mastered by Ryoji Noumi. Additional mixing by Ali Jaffar. The music is performed on a setup I call The Lionsnake: no-input feedback and mouthpiece-less trumpet. The ego becomes part lion-tamer, part snake charmer. The Lionsnake is unpredictable and uncontrollable - you can only ride it like a wave. A giant tidal wave of noise that would’ve have left Noah and his Ark at the bottom of the barrel of tales. And the trumpet - this is about war. Not angels. The endless trumpet call to troops, carrying them into conflicts across our histories. Noise is bred in the bowels of capitalism. The factories of England that revealed to Marx the savage exploitation of The Have-Nots by The Haves. The noise of airports, trains and ships that pollute our shared acoustic space and hurt the most vulnerable in society: children. The racket of construction that gentrifies neighborhoods once held dear by communities who cannot afford higher rents. Cities that commodify noise by installing bandaid barriers to keep out the belch of automobiles. If you think noise is just annoyance, think again: it is the ultimate disruptor. It is both an object (measured by an equation of decibels that allows authorities to wield disciplinary power over us) and a medium (for thinking, for conceiving, for disturbing). This historical moment is anything but a time for convention. Clearly we need an entire restructuring of the things we agree upon because our lives depend on it. The spaceship’s pilot is 30drop, a mysterious alias that has been running its platform 30D for a long while now and is not often seen outside its realm. So it’s an honor for us to have 30drop onboard. For this special occasion 30drop provides six cuts of futuristic techno but with a ravey approach in a time backspin that brings us back to the 90’s via Sci-Fi, reminding in some way of the early UR records, when Mad Mike and Jeff Mills worked together on the soundtrack of the future. This is our first mini LP with 3 cuts per side. The first cut is Brain reset, the short drone intro soon leads to a relentless groove made of repetitive sequences over a fast groove. Intense and obsessive. Mental Understanding brings more minimalistic ingredients, absence of hi hats, just kick drum and synth lines. Brain effervescence showcases the infamous 90’s hoover sound bringing the rave element and 303 acid lines all merged in a lawless and dense mixture. B side opens with Self awareness, starting with ethereal atmospheres, spiced with resonant bleeps and micro drones in a beat-less exercise. Klapaucjusz brings back the 90’s feeling again with analogue arpeggios and melodies, again over a clean groove in a Detroit oriented number. Closing the release, Knowledge, a space odyssey of strings, abstract synth lines and flotation.
