Siguiendo con #microcuratoríasMAC, en torno a obras de nuestro acervo que aborden la bandera chilena como eje central, poniéndola en cuestión, les compartimos “El peso de la nación”, de las artistas Luna Acosta (Bogotá, 1989) y Paula Baeza (Santiago, 1989). Donada a la Colección MAC en 2019, esta instalación textil se desarrolló a partir de una acción llevada a cabo durante un año (2016 - 2017) en diversos espacios públicos en Bogotá, Medellín y Santiago. Diversas agrupaciones y público general migrante contribuyeron con vestuario que se convirtió luego en la fibra de este tejido hecho a mano. La obra mide 4 por 8 metros aproximadamente. La bandera binacional escenifica la unión entre símbolos patrios de Colombia y Chile, recogiendo en su urdimbre las contradicciones y semejanzas de ambos pueblos. Esta no enaltece la patria sino que carga el peso de los diversos retazos del cuerpo que la materializan. La práctica común del textil invita a sentarse en la vía pública a tejer y conversar sobre los procesos político y sociales que muchas veces empujan a sus ciudadanos a emigrar de sus lugares originarios; reflexionando sobre la construcción de la identidad, la cultura, la sociedad y la comunidad latinoamericana. Este acto termina por convertirse en una práctica sanadora y reparadora, un gesto comunitario que hace converger en un tejido la necesidad de hablar sobre las distintas realidades sociales latinoamericanas que hoy se convulsionan paralelamente para manifestar su descontento con los modelos socioeconómicos imperantes; unificando en el despliegue vertical de esta bandera las diversas voces, testigos del constructo social que carga hoy la rigidez y tenacidad de toda una región que grita por mayor igualdad y oportunidad de acceso a sus derechos. This is my aunt Samira. She sells these handmade beautiful blankets to help supplement her social security income which is barely enough to pay her bills. She also collects and recycles cans for extra cash. By the age of 10, both of her parents had passed, and she quit school in Lebanon to help raise her 5 brothers. In 1990, shortly after I was born, she moved to America with help from her brothers. With selfless help from my mom and dad, she was able to work and start/run her own business in her younger years. She was always too stubborn to fully immerse herself in American culture. Thankfully, she’s probably the reason I still carry some of my family’s country’s mother tongue. She’s never been married and lives alone in a foreign land. She is the definition of resilience, but the older she gets, I can see the wear of prolonged cultural unfamiliarity on her. It’s September already! The summer holidays seemed to whizz by in a flash. Hace tiempo que no veía esas fotos, que no me paraba a pensar en ellas, este cosplay en concreto tiene un recuerdo agridulce para mí, de como las palabras de un ser querido pueden hundirte en la miseria, pero de como unas manos amigas pueden sacarte de ese pozo, secar tus lágrimas y hacerte sonreír de nuevo, al menos un poco. Me hacia mucha ilusión llevar ese cosplay, incluso le encargue a alguien que me lo cosiera y lo adaptara a mi cuerpo, porque no tengo un cuerpo como el del personaje, pero quería llevarlo igualmente. Me adaptaron el cosplay, lo hicieron cómodo para mi y yo cada vez tenia más ganas de llevarlo, me sentía muy cómoda con el. Llegó el evento y unas palabras me hicieron sentir como si fuera un gran herror, me hicieron sentir que no era agradable para la vista y que lo mejor que podía hacer era taparme, vergüenza, producía vergüenza ajena. No recuerdo cuánto tiempo pasé llorando en el baño de acreditados del salón, gracias a ese baño pude llorar hasta quedarme seca, pero tenía esas palabras en mi mente, ya no estaba cómoda, ya no me lo quería poner, quería cambiarme y ponerme mi ropa de calle, tirar el cosplay y hacer como si nunca hubiera existido. Volví al stand con esa idea en la mente, con ese pensamiento. Una disculpa a medias, eso me encontré, una disculpa en parte. No entendía nada, hasta que me quede con mis amigas, que me quitaron de la cabeza la absurda idea de cambiarme, de tirar el cosplay, y se pusieron a hacer el idiota conmigo para que me olvidara, en parte, de lo que había ocurrido. Aún y así, este cosplay está en el fondo de mi armario, y es una lastima, solo me lo puse una vez, solo lo disfrute a medias una vez. From founder Maresa Ponitch of @dustyrosevintage: This might seem like a weird photo to post for #EarthDay but let me tell you a bit about what you’re looking at. ⁣ ⁣ This is called shoddy. It is made from shredded fiber waste and is used in all sorts of applications (stuffing, insulation, etc). This practice has existed in textile recycling for at least a century. ⁣ ⁣ HOWEVER, when I started working in the industry in 2004, this seemingly mundane byproduct was becoming a huge indicator of the problems these factories were facing. ⁣ ⁣ The fast fashion industry was churning out clothing at an alarming rate, but the materials were mostly synthetic and so low quality that not only could they not be resold as garments, they were destroying the machines that made the shoddy. ⁣ ⁣ Processing used clothing is extremely labor intensive. And the volume to process was skyrocketing while the value was plummeting. This created a huge domino effect as many textile recyclers had to shut down or move overseas. ⁣ ⁣ It’s complicated and global and touches so many parts of our lives that you’re probably not aware of. ⁣ ⁣ So always, but even more in this time of upheaval, I urge you to consider your choices. I CAN FINALLY TELL YOU ABOUT THE SECRET PROJECT I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON! I designed my first pattern 😬 . This is the #MagicalGirlCowl ✨ She is currently in testing with some awesome folks. But I’m so excited to be able to share this huge announcement. If it isn’t obvious by now I love Sailor Moon. When I look around I don’t see really any patterns related to Sailor Moon that fit what I want. So I decided why not design it?! This is a colorwork cowl that is knit in the round showcasing Sailor Moons classic scepter, and what’s a Sailor Moon cowl without tons of stars? . I knit it up in my Magical Girl colorway as my MC and Diana as my CC. This pattern is going to go live October 25th! And to make it even more exciting and fun I’m putting together bundles that will be in different weights and the pattern will be included in the bundle! I will announce bundles two weeks before the pattern launches so you can get it before it goes live. . I won’t be releasing this on Ravelry as I am not much of a user and with accessibility issues for folks I’m not messing around. Day 5 of dyeing Appa and every single time I have fingering weight in the trays, all I want is rice noodles😂🤤 I should be finished dyeing Appa soon (read: as soon as my powder dyes come in because I just used the last of the base for this colorway and I still have more skeins to dye😂)! And after this, the other colorways should get knocked out quickly.
