Spot - Almonda Location - Alcanena The spring of the Almonda river (or Olho do Moinho da Fonte) is located on the southeastern ridge of the Serra de Aire, Torres Novas anticline resulting from, among others, contact between the Estremenho Calcário Massif and the less permeable soils of the basin of the Tagus. This karst spring is the exsurgence of the underground hydrological network of the most extensive national karstic system. The Almonda grotto has an approximate development of 10km, with an extensive network of underground, fossil or active galleries. Due to its complexity and size, its exploration and documentation is yet to be completed. Although the spring is permanent, it is only possible to dive on dry season. It is possible to go trough 1000mts of galleries and a drop of -78mts. In the rainy season, it is impossible to penetrate the system at the source due to the strong current and flow rate. Happy Shark Awareness Day! Today we want to celebrate some of the lesser known species of shark native to the coastal waters of California. Like brown smoothound, soupfin, spiny dogfish, leopard, and swell sharks, all abundant in California waters. Most shark species are not dangerous to humans and the beautiful angel shark is one of them. If you were a small fish cruising near the sandy bottom you COULD be in danger though. The angel shark is an ambush predator with a lightening quick gulping reflex. It lays on the bottom motionless and covered in sand all day waiting for an opportunity to surprise and snap up any unsuspecting fish swimming by. The prey preferences of these smaller species of sharks typically include small fish and invertebrates, such as shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and some mollusks. The beautiful white sand of a tropical sea beach is majorly produced by Parrorfish poop 😀 .... No matter how strange it may sound, it’s actually true. Using their beak-like teeth, Parrotfishes scrape off algae growing on coral reefs, and in turn, they consume parts of the corals. The indigestible coral skeletons made of calcium-carbonate are later excreted as sand. Just one Parrotfish can produce hundreds of kilograms of white sand each year. How lucky are we!!! 🐙🐠🦑🐟 One of the special things about the ocean is that it does not matter how many times you have dived in the same place, if the site is just a sandy bottom, or if it is alive with coral. It doesn’t matter if you are searching for the tiniest crab or if you are watching Humpbacked Whales swim by, the ocean is consistently awe-inspiring. For those of us who have been fortunate to travel and explore diving locations around the world their tends to be a couple spots, maybe one dive or a collection of moments that come to mind, when asked where your favorite dive spot is.
