The Zunic family, Begarra Almonds, are the Almondco Quality Award recipients for season 2019. This 3rd generation farming family purchased their first almond orchard in 1997. Their roots in Riverland horticulture however started much earlier with Micks mother and father settling on a property in the Renmark North area after migrating to Australia from Croatia in 1956. Micks brother Peter and family continue the tradition on the original Zunic property. Fast forward almost 23 years and now Micks children are involved in the family farming venture. Mick, along with sons Mark and James, discuss their story and their hands on family approach to maintaining orchard cleanliness, to produce almonds of a high quality. Congratulations to the Zunic family for winning the award for the 2019 Season – ‘harvested and marketed in 2019’. Esse mês, o envio é de 4kg de cajuzinho do cerrado fresco. É uma fruta linda e muito saborosa! O cajuzinho é uma joia do cerrado que tem resistido às duras queimadas todos os anos. Toneladas se perdem em meio às comunidades pela dificuldade da colheita e principalmente, dificuldade em escoar a fruta. Essa é a proposta do projeto, buscar os produtos em seu melhor momento, ajudar as comunidades e também valorizar cada extrativista de maneira justa. Jack-in-the Pulpit is one of our favorite plants to spot each spring and a fun flower for children to identify with its leaf-hood and tiny person inside. In late summer and early fall, this iconic native species puts on another show with its bright red berries that stand out on the woodland floor. In bloom, the flower of the Jack-in-the-Pulpit is actually hidden inside the plant, on the spadix, inside the pitcher. The spathe or leaf-hood covers the spadix, protecting the flower from rainwater that would otherwise wash away its pollen. Insects, such as gnats, pollinate the flower when they are drawn into the pitcher by the fungal smell the plant emits. Although this plant mimics a pitcher-plant, Jack-in-the-Pulpit is not carnivorous. In late summer, after pollination, showy red berries form in large clumps that ripen in the fall and have the consistency of a ripe tomato. The berries are an attractive food source for birds, such as wood thrushes, wild turkeys and ring-necked pheasants as well as small mammals, who spread the plants seeds after ingesting the berries. Each berry contains 1 to 5 seeds. While Jack-in-the-Pulpit is an intriguing plant in both spring and fall, it is important to note that it is toxic and can be dangerous to humans. Its leaves and fruit contain calcium oxalate that can cause swelling and burning sensations in the mouth, throat, stomach and skin when ingested or touched. Native Americans learned how to prepare this plant for medicinal purposes by cooking different parts of it, however, it is important to note that this plant should not be ingested raw. The long-standing dream for secure farmland is quickly becoming a reality for one group of immigrant farmers here in Maine. In May, the Somali Bantu Community Association (SBCA) and Agrarian Trust formed the Little Jubba Central Maine Agrarian Commons (AC), a transformative new model for community-centered land tenure. The Little Jubba Central Maine AC found their dream farm, 107 acres in nearby Wales, Maine. The long-standing dream for secure farmland is quickly becoming a reality. This week, we are joining with other Maine farmers in devoting our social media presence to supporting @somalibantumaine in their endeavor to raise money for land access and a forever farm for their group of farmers. We’re feeling super up-beet 🤣 about our first candied beetroots coming out of the ground this year! So pretty! We’ve been harvesting our beetroots for a while, but these candy striped works of art have been worth the wait! A culinary tip: if you want the flavour of beetroot, but don’t want everything to turn pink, use golden and candied beetroots. Our candied beetroot will be made into a Carpaccio, plus we’re roasting, pickling, pairing beetroot with rubbed kale in a scrummy salad, its going in cake, kombucha… (Hmm... sounding a bit like Forest Gump!). If you hike up above 7000 feet during the summer in southern Arizona, you may have seen ladybug beetles 🐞 congregating like this. As temperatures rise in the low desert and food sources dry up, they take off to the mountain tops and spend their time eating and ultimately forming these dense swarms or colonies. As things cool off in the winter months, they’ll migrate back down to lower elevation where mating will occur, restarting the cycle.
