Have you heard this from your physical therapist? . If you have, this is most likely not the answer to whatever injury/pain you are feeling. Often times an injury occurs due to under preparation. . Although at times you may need to modify a specific movement, complete elimination can push you further away from where you need or want to be. . In a lot of the fitness market, there is extreme attention to thoracic extension and scapula retraction. Although these qualities are largely missing in a sedentary population, I think that when we are analyzing the demands of specific sports we need to make sure we aren’t overlooking flexion and protraction patterns. For throwers in baseball specifically these two qualities contribute to the braking mechanism in the throwing motion. Thus, having the ability to control the range of motion and be strong in them will allow increased velocity in pitches. With that being the case, it is my opinion that we need to teach the athlete how to do those things THEN put strength into those patterns. Most people in baseball have adopted some of this in the form of wall slides from Eric Cressey, but at some point a singular exercise is only going to elicit so much adaptation in these movement archetypes. As such, we need to ensure that we are actively creating variance in our movement work to ensure that the athlete is put in the best position to succeed. Looking to the top of the sport, at one of the games hardest throwers in Nathan Eovaldi, we see an extreme amount of thoracic flexion in the throwing motion. While this is probably on the outlier side in the amount of flexion (and knee extension) capacity, it really allows us to see that it is present in the pitch sequence. One problem is that if we don’t have access to slow motion videos or pictures of this exact moment, which often times get discarded because they aren’t “pretty,” we can miss this nuance of the movement entirely. So I am using a simple tall kneeling thoracic flexion w/ scapula protraction to train those movements in conjunction with each other, since that is what we see on the field. Second day of our Athletic Restart!💥 My main goal is to rebalance my body and gain more energy☄️ I weighed in at 152lbs mid day. I haven’t weighed myself in years because I don’t really believe in relying on a scale and I don’t want to create an unhealthy cycle with a “number” ever again. This just goes to show that it’s NOT about the number on the scale ☝🏻, it’s about body composition. Over the years I’ve weighed about the same. Top four reasons people can improve health related problems, regardless of any intervention: NATURAL HISTORY Commonly (but not always), health related complaints will improve with time irrespective of any treatment. REGRESSION TO THE MEAN This is the statistical phenomenon that if a variable (i.e. a health complaint) is extreme on its first measurement, it will tend to be closer to the average (i.e ‘better’) on its second measurement, or vice versa. Since most people seek medical care when their symptoms are worse than average, subsequent measures MAY be closer to the average, and therefore ‘better’. THE ‘ALL HANDS ON DECK’ EFFECT The motivation to seek out professional care may inspire other healthy behaviours (i.e. more sleep, physical activity, better diet, improved stress etc.). MEANING RESPONSES Nonspecific, positive treatment effects created by contextual factors, verbal and non-verbal factors, expectations etc. outside of any particular intervention given. They are difficult to measure but most certainly contribute positive health outcomes in small ways. So there you have it. Sometimes you get ‘better’ without our ‘interventions doing anything. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Christmas is in like 3 months. Sorry WHAT… cue the anxiety On a zoom call with a new client the other day, she told me she’s actually dreading things going back to normal. This threw me off. But then she explained… she said she was embarrassed to see friends and family again as things go back to normal and holidays approach because she let herself go during quarantine and can’t fit into any of her clothes like she used to. She doesn’t want people to see her like this. That broke my freaking heart. Maybe you’ve spent the last very weird 9 months in a body that you don’t love. It was a little easier before because we were all living in sweat pants and no one could really see you from the Zoom square down. So that extra take out to support small businesses, the extra bottle of wine or two a week.. It kind of just snuck up on you. But now… you’re finding yourself struggling to get back into your “real people clothes”… You’re definitely not alone. But you do have a choice. That choice is to decide who you want to be in 2021 and not waste another minute of 2020, not becoming that person. As I get leaner and see more definition, I get more excited to step back on stage! The process is tough, it takes time, so I need to enjoy the moments I get to show it off. 🔥FOR FAT LOSS🔥 Weight or fat loss can feel like a minefield at times.. What diet is the best? What foods should or shouldn’t I be eating? Do I need to exercise? If yes, what’s the best exercise? To be honest - a calorie deficit is all you really need; but hitting your required protein intake will make that feel considerably easier.. After that, I could have flipped the top three, but as I’ve seen so much success in my programs by fixing people’s sleep, it’s made it ahead of resistance training and cardio.. That’s not to say the others aren’t important.. they are.. they’re just not as important as your calorie (or even your protein intake) if weight or fat loss is the goal.. There are 2 types of people for when life truly challenges them: . 1. These people crinkle up like a thrown away receipt. They allow the challenges to win. They let excuse override. It’s easy to do, trust me. I’ve been there. . 2. These people use the struggles as fuel of “the only choice I have is to continue to take care of myself to be able to get through these tough times. To be able to take care of those in need. To keep the business running. For my family, myself. LIFE!❤️” whatever it is to you! For me, ALL of the above! . You see, when Nick deployed in January, I had my few days and then said “ok gotta get my shit together to take care of the home front! Put on your big girl 👖 Han” and I did. . March 8th, he got shot overseas and we lost 2 brothers KIA the same day. The moment I opened the door to get notified, something clicked “I MUST stay strong for US. Nick may be across the 🌍 but I have to keep going.” I drown myself around good people, work because it fulfills me, eating well, and fitness (ok, a few dominos orders were placed but I’d say I had a damn good balance spite the challenges!😂) . April 1, he was sent home early. I had no choice but to keep our household afloat, all chores done, dinner made, dogs taken care of, lawn, you get it. For the first 3 months he was home, he couldn’t drive. I took my laptop everywhere we went and worked in the car, doc offices, hospitals, etc. . In July & August, we stood by the families of the brothers we lost that day to lay them to rest, honor them, their families& give our respect. All of us had to stay strong for THEM. 🙏🏽 . Since April, we have been back + forth between Walter Reed for weeks at a time for top medical care. Each time, taking the dogs + making it work. I’m not letting Nick go through this alone. . This month, we sold a dream house we bought just a year ago that we had planned to be in for the next 8-10 years to move into a small townhome for the time being as we figure out our next chapter. (Stay tuned. Its going to be great, right now this middleman part is just odd! Lol) Life changes so quick. Here’s a stretch idea Think about the bible There’s a lot of lessons to be learned from that book Before I go any further with this, the only time I read the bible was during one summer while I was home from college My dad’s condition was getting progressively worse and I couldn’t understand how there could be a God when good people suffered So I made it my mission to find flaws in that book to prove to my parents this book was bullshit and a funny thing happened… it changed their perception about God It’s one of the things I regret the most because it took away my dad’s faith & belief… Back to the main point here The bible is full of stories designed to help you become a better human being and to live ideally What the bible doesn’t provide is become-good tactics to help you reach heaven and avoid hell When it comes to fat loss, the good coaches teach patience, tracking food intake & increasing movement in ways that fit your lifestyle The bad ones I’ve seen push products onto people without giving a full explanation of why or better options When it comes to YOUR journey, you’re going to be alive for a very long time (hopefully) Make it worth it by not filling your body with numerous supplements but instead by a lifestyle that makes you healthier, stronger, and happier 🙂 If you can’t be consistent, what’s the next closest thing you could become? - @quoteabel on Instagram

I’ve always been an athlete BUT my body didn’t always want me to be. 🏋🏽♀️ . It was my hardest challenge to overcome and accept in my journey. It was (and is) a huge part of my identity and how I define myself. . There have been so many times a fellow Lymie has reached out to me expressing their grief over the loss of movement, exercise, or being able to feel their body work in the way they want. . I understand that. I feel that deep in my soul. It hurts. It’s a huge loss. . A rise in symptoms sends me right back to the couch and I ache for the ability to move again. . These past two weeks I struggled to just make it through work, trying to stay awake and keep moving during my shifts. My off days I barely moved to save up my energy. . Today was the first day I got back to moving & I am so grateful for the ability to heal and move my body. Moving is a huge part in how I detox my body and prevent inflammation.. when my symptoms come back and I can’t exercise, it’s like a double whammy against my body. 🌟MY TOP PULL UP TIPS🌟 Want to be able to crank out pull ups?? If so, keep reading because as requested I’m gonna share some tips and progression exercises that’s gonna help you improve on your pull ups! 1️⃣ My BIGGEST TIP: GET OFF OF THE ASSISTED PULL UP MACHINE. Here’s why. While it is extremely useful for some to use this piece of equipment it allows you to rest your knees completely on a platform and take away the need for you to engage your core to stabilize yourself. This is why I suggest a band or doing assisted pull ups like the ones in my last video. They allow for more dynamic assistance and requires you to engage more muscle groups to perform the exercise. 2️⃣ Incorporate the progression exercises from this post into your back day as accessories. Even if you can bust out pull ups change it up, do weighted pull ups, offset pull ups, introduce more instability to a pull up. I rarely ever do normal body weight pull ups to progress. Also don’t rush into it! It’s better to do multiple reps and sets of a regression than 1 full pull up with bad form. 3️⃣ Make sure you have good form when doing pull ups! A few tips: keep a flat back, chest to bar, head in line with body. A lot of tips here so let me know if you would like to see pull up form in my next for Friday! Here are some exercises to incorporate: 🌟Scapular Retractions You can also do this exercise with a towel or band in between your hands, you don’t have to be hanging from a bar. Also great for activation! 🌟Inverted Rows You can do these either pronated or supinated! 🌟Iso Holds 🌟Negative Pull Up You can combine this with iso holds as well! 🌟Assisted Pull Up I like this variation because you can adjust the assistance so easily. As you get more fatigued, you can use your feet a little more for help. 2020 just keeps dropping nasty surprises! This week the 2020 Europeans in November was cancelled and Wednesday I hurt my lower back during a frontsquat. The clever people from @arca_loefteriet (thanks @benjaminratz and @methomasen) told me to keep moving as much as possible, and luckily I have @coachtravismash to help me adjust the program to get back as quickly as possible. Todays session consisted of strict presses, split squats, hip thrusts and some pull ups and dips. I was able to move without the pain getting worse, and I my mobility in the lower back was much better post training. Im not a fan of calling it an injury every time my body hurts, but this might be the closest Ive ever been to something like that during my 5 years as a weightlifter. It definitely didnt feel right to just collapse to the ground during a squat and not being able to stand up for five minutes. But here I am four days later moving around as much as possible. I asked all of you to define the word disability and all of your definitions made me reflect on how I want others to view disability. When I think of the word disabled I think of a physical challenge someone faces to do ordinary tasks. Disability isn’t a bad word or a taboo topic. It’s not something you have to whisper or fear. Disabled is a way to describe a physical state. It’s a description. When we tip toe away from the term disabled we are perpetuating the stigma that disabled people are incapable, crippled, invalid, or less than. We are giving power to the negative connotation society has given the word disability. I am a disabled woman and I kick ass. A: YES! — 🎥 1) Feel like your shoulders are forward, chest is compressed and it’s hard for you to breathe into your chest wall? . ̶̶ ̶S̶W̶I̶P̶E̶ ̶̶̶ . 🎥 2) Try this rock back push up variation that helps promote expansion of the chest wall (anterior) as you are crushing through your push ups! - So what’s actually happening here? - 🔹During the rock back, you are placing your torso in an inverted position (pelvis above rib cage) making it easier to breathe into your chest thanks to gravity and pressure. . 🔹 Inhale as you rock back: promotes chest wall (anterior) expansion as the position of the scapula is shunting air from back to front... ALSO... . 🔹Inhaling while your arms are overhead promotes upward rotation of your upper anterior rib cage and clavicle (pump handle) thus creating more space for air to flow into. . . . “Alis Volat Propriis” is Oregon’s state motto. It translates to, “She flies with her own wings.” . I’ve been obsessed with this sentence ever since I was a kid. I don’t have any tattoos, but if I did, you can bet that this would be written on me somewhere. At one point it was definitely in my IG bio. Point being, it resonates with me. . It especially resonated with me just over 2 years ago when I posted this photo. It was when I quit my full time dream job at Love Your Melon in Minneapolis & moved back home to Oregon to turn my side hustle into my full time business. It was never my intention to create a career out of health & fitness. Heck I went to college for product design & advertising! It sort of just happened on accident. I blame it on one thing & one thing only.... . PASSION. . Quitting my steady job where I was making great money & building an awesome resume was so scary. Yet, it was also the most liberating & empowering decision I’ve ever made. . My family thought I was CRAZY! I agreed. But, Steve Jobs said it best when he said, “Those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” . Never wait for permission from others to do what you love. The moment I learned how to make my own decisions and to be independent was the moment I began to see success. . Independence doesn’t necessarily mean being completely on your own. I have a huge support system backing me up. However, I don’t rely on them as deeply as I rely on myself. . Independence is doing the right thing, on your own - without seeking approval or validation. . So much has happened since I quit my job 2 years ago. So much has changed. So many obstacles have tried to stop me. But they didn’t. They made me stronger. . Find your purpose. Chase your passion. Follow your gut. Discover your true authentic self. Do the unexpected. My favorite chapter of life is this one; I call it “Self Love”. • I wrote a book entitled “My Life in Red Lipstick” and then didn’t wear red lipstick much after that. Not because I was afraid or because I couldn’t- that chapter of my life was just over. Now I wear red lipstick when I’m feeling nostalgic and that’s about it. The next book I said I’d write (I never started but if I pick that passion up again...) was going to be called “My Life in Blonde Hair”. Some part of me believes that I never started writing because I’m going to be here a while. I REALLY love my blonde hair. And right now I’m in the self love chapter and I’ve got a lot to say. Update!!! 4 Monate intuitive Ernährung Ohne Verbote Ohne wiegen Ohne tracken Diese Lebensumstellung, ist so tief in mir drin verankert, dass es nicht darum geht ein Ziel zu erreichen. In den letzten vier Monaten habe ich verstanden, dass ich immer das Ziel bin. Es gibt keine Zahl mehr auf der Waage zu erreichen, keine Kalorien zu tracken oder Verbote zum brechen. Es gibt nur mein altes Ich, dass immer wieder mit dem neuen in Konflikt gerät. Um die Spannung aus dem Post zu nehmen, NEIN ich habe weder getrackt noch mich gewogen. Ich weiß nicht ob ich zu oder abgenommen habe. Was ich spüre ist ein deutliches Entschleunigen, ich plane weniger was ich wann und wie essen. Ich empfinde keinen Druck mehr beim Essen gehen, weil ich nicht weiß was an Nährstoffen drin ist. Mein Gelüste auf alles Mögliche werden kleiner und sind zum teilen ganz verschwunden. Ich habe viele neue Seiten an mir und meinem Essverhalten kennengelernt. Die Verbote aufzulösen, sorgt tatsächlich für Entspannung. ABER es gibt Tage an denen es mir natürlich unter den Nägeln brennt. Das sind Tage an denen ich mich fett, hässlich und nicht liebenswert fühle. Wenn ich Stress habe, wenn ich das Gefühl habe meinen Hunger nicht honoriert zu haben (als Gäbe es dafür eine Regeln), an Tagen wo ich wenig Leistung bringen, kurz gesagt an Tagen wo ich mich nicht liebe. Ich habe aber verstanden, dass genau das die Tage sind an denen es vertan wäre der Versuchung nach Kontrolle nachzugeben. Ich würde mich über eine Abnahme nicht freuen aber bei einer Zunahme in meiner Wertlosigkeit bestätigt fühlen. und da ist egal, dass ich es eigentlich besser weiß. Sich sporadisch zu wiegen, ist so aussagekräftig wie eine Wettervorhersage für die nächsten drei Wochen. Es geht darum, meinen eigenen inneren Kritiker zu füttern. Aber ich halte ihn ruhig...einatmen...ausatmen - Du bist immer wertvoll - Du bist immer liebenswert - Du bist schön - Du hast ein recht auf ein gutes Leben - Du kannst alles sein - Dein Körper ist ein Geschenk Meine Leitsätze, meine Matras, mein neues ich, dass es so verdient hat alles Glück und alle Liebe zu erfahren die nur möglich ist. Feeling the RDL all in your lower back? Struggling to feel your Glutes and Hamstrings doing the work? Lower back is feeling achy and sore after performing RDLS? Here might be why⬇️⬇️⬇️ ❌You’re initiating the movement with anterior pelvic tilt (swipe to see a slow-mo demonstration), this occurs when you rotate your pelvis forwards (imagine a ‘sticking your bum out’ motion). Done excessively, this moves your lumbar spine into hyperextension (an exaggerated curve of the lower back), causing tension to shift away from the glutes and hamstrings and onto your spinal erectors (lower back muscles). ✅Instead what we want to do is initiate the movement by flexing at our hips - allowing our torso to lean forwards under control, maintaining a nice neutral spine and pelvis throughout. Really think about pinching your Glutes and lengthening your hamstrings. The RDL is more often than not performed with more weight than the individual is capable of lifting efficiently. Causing their Erectors to compensate. Remember, more weight does not mean more muscular tension if you are simply letting other muscles do the job for you. 🌟Main take away points: when thinking ‘hips back’ in an RDL don’t initiate by rotating the pelvis forwards, initiate by flexing at the hips. - @amandasykesfit on Instagram

As memed on @testosteronenation . I hear this concern from 80% of the women I consult with in some form or another. They’re concerned about getting too manly or bulky. . As much as we fitness professionals know the difference, this myth lives on so we must navigate it to defuse fears. In the end respect the wishes of clients but we also want to work to combat misinformation and fear. . I often point out how many men work tirelessly to gain muscle and how slow this process is. How many of the guys who are working hard to this goal aren’t yet “bulky”. What makes a woman with one tenth or less our natural testosterone think she’s going to get super jacked quickly. . All this being said, women actually build muscle comparatively well to men. Women just start with less overall lean mass when untrained, have less upper body mass, and have smaller average bone structure to support muscle. . Another key point is how outside of genetically gifted individuals, almost all the images of really muscular lean women in fitness magazines and on Instagram use some performance enhancing drugs. They’re almost never honest or open about it(they can’t due to legalities and sponsorships) but it’s not hard to tell. So don’t use the images as your reasoning for not working out. This doesn’t happen by accident. . Strength training is one of the best things any human and especially women can do for their long term physical and mental health. Women are more at risk of bone mineral density loss so it’s essential to maintain strong bones and muscles to support them. We also see dramatic improvement in blood pressure and blood sugar regulation on top of a long list of other benefits of getting strong. . As for the people who often discourage women with these myths, they’re usually individuals who have an ulterior motive to discourage. Often is weak men who feel emasculated by strong independent women. Sometimes is a controlling male in her life. Squats and Anterior Pelvic Tilt Anterior pelvic tilt occurs when your pelvis is rotated forwards, causing your lumbar spine to move into extension (curve). There is nothing wrong with tilting your pelvis forwards and backwards and moving your lumbar spine into flexion and extension (we do this all the time, when we dance for example). But doing this excessively under spinal loading can increase your risk of injury, and so should be avoided if your goal is to stay pain and injury-free (and if your goal is to lift most optimally - which it should be). ❌Alot of people misinterpret the cue of ‘hips back’ during the squat by rotating the pelvis forwards (anterior pelvic tilting), resulting to an exaggerated lumbar curve (hyperextension). Or if you’re trying to look like you have a Beyoncé bum while squatting. This position can compromise proper intra-abdominal pressure (which is vital to protect the lower back), as well as compromising total body stability and tension. Being a suboptimal position for developing and transferring force. ✅We should aim to maintain a neutral spine - 3 natural (non exaggerated) curves, a neutral pelvis, with slight tension kept in the Glutes at the top of the Squat (I say slight because excessive Glute squeezing is pointless). Proper intra-abdominal pressure can be created and maintained, as well as full body stability and tension. Being the most optimal position for developing and transferring force. The cue ‘hips back’ should instead by initiated by flexion at the hips - torso leans forwards maintaining that neutral spinal positioning. 🌟Main takeaway point: do not initiate the ‘hips back’ cue by rotating the pelvis forwards. Initiate with hip flexion. Being a part of the #laderaranch community, we feel it’s important to keep our friends, neighbors and customers updated with latest information about our business. . As some of our customers learned yesterday on Friday July 3rd, unfortunately we had to temporarily close our Ladera Ranch store. Last week, one of our employees informed us that their immediate family member had tested positive for COVID-19, and that they went to get tested themselves, even without displaying any symptoms. . Upon receiving this information, we took swift action to temporarily excuse the employee for isolation, and shut down operations. We brought in professional sanitation services @prosanitizers to deep clean our store and contacted local clinic @afcladeraranch to see if we could get our entire staff tested. The team over at AFC Ladera Ranch were kind and gracious enough to quickly take in our entire staff last minute and administer rapid antibody tests (which all came back negative) and the main swab tests. . Although we have a very strict protective gear and cleaning protocol in place for the store, our Ladera Ranch location will be temporarily closed until further notice unless we are certain we can return with a fully cleared staff and continue to provide the safest dining and working experience for everyone. Our #ranchosantamargarita store remains open for business as usual. Once we receive testing confirmation, we could open as soon as Monday, July 6th. Continuing on my list of exercises series, we have this list of the top 5 exercises you should do if dealing with LBP As you can see, the exercises that you should do depend upon your individual goals and preferences If youre a powerlifter, you should be doing some variation of S/B/D, along with your assistance work If youre a weightlifter, you should be doing some variation of the comp lifts, as well as squats, pulls, etc If youre a Crossfitter, you should be doing your normal training, but in a modified manner Theres no secret exercises that will magically make your pain go away, nor is one type of exercise inherently more effective than any other type Find a way to modify your normal training so that you can still train with relative comfort, and progress/regress as your low back requires If you need help navigating this situation, reach out to a trusted healthcare provider who can evaluate you and determine a proper plan of care to address your pain and get you back into lifting Please tag a friend with LBP so they can see this! —————————————— Disclaimer: This is not medical advice. Just saying🤷🏽♂️...soft tissue work can be extremely beneficial, but if you NEED a ton of it just to feel comfortable in a deep squat or deadlift, you need to rearrange your priorities & really analyze how well & often you’re moving during the rest of the day. . Here’s the deal. If this sounds like you, start setting an alarm on your phone to sit in a deep squat (even a goblet squat or holding on to a rack for assistance counts) a few times during the day. Grab your backpack at school or briefcase at work & get a few weight shift stretches in during a quick break (this exercise can be found on YouTube under the title “the BEST hip opener). Stretches for Low Back Pain 👐🏼 - I mentioned in my stories some causes of low back pain. The first thing you should do is consult with your physician. If you’re approved to stretch then try these 😘 - Hold each stretch for 5- 4 sec inhale and 6 sec exhales ( 5- 10 second breathes) You’re stretching is more effective when you move with your breath! - 🌀 Lateral Flexion w/ Shoulder rotation: Start slow! You’ll notice you’ll feel the stretch differently depending on how rotated you are. You can pick a spot or move slowly through the rotation. 🌀Figure 4 w/ trunk rotation: Go through your own range of motion. Listen to your body. Discomfort is ok but pain is not. If this is painful, it’s not the stretch for you. 🌀 Child’s Pose: Helps release compression in the lumbar spine and stretches the QL. 🌀Cat & Cow: This is more of a functional stretch. Move with intention. Inhale as you arch and exhale as you hollow. Bringing movement and circulation to the spine can help alleviate pain. 🌀 Rolling: you’ll probably feel immediate relief after rolling the QL area. Rolling is meant for your soft tissue so stay off your bones. I’m looking at you “corrective exercise” crowd 👀 🤡 . It seems to be in vogue in the fitness/rehab industry right now to sell people on the idea that they are “broken”, “imbalanced”, or on the road to injury. It’s a narrative feeding off fear. “Sign up for my course”, “Buy my new massage gun”, “Hire me as your coach” and you’ll be okay. Practitioners are creating problems that aren’t there. . When we use the word “hurt” in this context, we are referring to anything that is impeding performance: be that actual pain/hurt preventing you from performing, or asymmetry/imbalance to the extent that you are moving inefficiently. If you’re experiencing either of those issues, then by all means there is something to address. . The human body is not such a fragile system. If it was, we would not have survived and asserted dominance the way we have, despite not being the biggest, fastest, or strongest predators out there. . The human body is not, will not, and should not ever be a perfectly balanced and symmetrical system. We are the way we are by design; everything serving a purpose for our function and survival. . As stated before, if something isn’t hurting your performance, then there is nothing to fix. The time spent diving down the rabbit hole of “perfect” movement is time that could be spent actually chasing your performance goals. Time is a limited resource. Use it on the things that actually matter. .
