Yes, Men Cry !!! For decades, we used terms like “macho,” “red-blooded” or “machismo” to describe the kind of hulking masculinity that men were, on some level, expected to aspire to. Now we have “toxic masculinity” Toxic masculinity is what can come of teaching boys that they can’t express emotion openly; that they have to be “tough all the time”; that anything other than that makes them “feminine” or weak. If you don’t fit in the man box, you pay the price. At best, you risk invisibility. At worst, you risk disrespect, bullying, or even violence. Men are people, and people have complex feelings and emotions. People are nuanced, and they can be weak, or unsure, or scared, or any other number of non-manly emotions. Real men do cry. Men get upset and sad and depressed, they feel insecure about themselves, their bodies, their abilities, and they are allowed to feel pain and frustration and loss. It’s been 10 days since the @nytimes called “media-savvy” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “viral condemnation of sexism” a means ”to amplify her own political brand.” For context, her speech was in response to fellow House member Ted Yoho calling her “a f*cking b*tch” on the Capitol steps and his subsequent non-apology on the House floor. “I apologize for their misunderstanding,” Mr. Yoho said. But “I cannot apologize for my passion or for loving my god, my family and my country.” This incident reminded me of when I played Judy Chen, a thirtysomething investigative financial journalist in @ayadakhtar’s JUNK. The play was set in 1985. For context, that was 15 years after 60 women sued Newsweek for only allowing men to be staff reporters. And that also was six months before Time would publish an article saying women in their 40s were more likely to be killed by a terrorist than get married. During one talkback, an audience member shared that they judged Judy (lol, ok Nancy be serious) for not having rebuffed the advances of an ultra-wealthy man she interviews for her book. And in Judy’s defense, I replied, “how come no one judges the rich man for hitting on her while she was doing her job?” To that end, how come Ted Yoho isn’t considered “media-saavy” and his actions seen as a “means to amplify *his* own political brand”? How come men using their power to their advantage is so normal it is invisible? But when women like @aoc do it it makes them f*cking b*tches? In the words of Angelica Schuyler to Hamilton (per Lin-Manuel Miranda), “you forget yourself.” Today, I am committed to being ‘the rubber’ opposing ‘the glue’ of society’s sexist double standards. It started in 2014 with an idea, How do I make the worlds best dress shirt? 2015: Failed at my first prototype shirt after having no fashion or design experience. 2016: We publicly launched our shirts on the runway at NY Fashion Week and I began to sell my first dress shirts in super limited supply in order to get real feedback and customers testimonials. This is the year I met Julie too :) 2017: We were surprised to be featured on the front page of the Palm Beach Post and we sold out! Unfortunately, our manufacturer went out of business. We lost all momentum and couldnt find a new one for 8 months. 2018: Started to officially market our dress shirts having established a working supply chain. Raised almost 12K from our Kickstarter. Won a $10k pitch competition. However, we also struggled to figure out our identity and finally realized we would thrive as an e-commerce company working directly with consumers. 2019: We learned how to run an effective online business and brought on a business partner to help us scale. This is an extremely edited summary of our journey till today and its to provide context about how difficult it sometimes is to build something from nothing. When I first started, I had no investors, no connections, and no industry expertise. Hard work is an understatement. Starting this business is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Deep Breath* Secretly, for the past 20 months, we’ve been working on a one-of-a kind business project. Back in 2018, Versattire was selected as one of only 5 businesses to star in the documentary series I Quit. We officially started this project two weeks before getting married in 2019. Crazy Rich Asians (2018) 🎬 Dir. Jon M. Chu . Crazy Rich Asians will always hold a special place in my heart ♥️ because it was the first time I ever saw a story about an Asian American woman with an all Asian cast on the big screen📽. . I was so blown away by the production design. I fell in love with the visuals 🎇and costumes👗 and the overall grandeur of the film. It reminded me of a modern day Gatsby🎆. . I loved how the writers focused on the importance of family because in Asian culture, a relationship affects everyone in the family👨👩👧👧. There is also the theme of sacrifice which is huge in Asian culture because of the collectivism mentality where the whole is more important than the individual. . But my all time favorite part has to be the mahjong scene❤️. It was so well written, directed, and performed that the audience doesn’t even need to understand the game to understand the scene. . I want to praise it even more but I don’t want to spoil the film. It is so worth watching that I watched it twice ✌️ in theaters! From the Operation Theatre to the Runway... Dr. Manu Bora- a successful orthopaedic surgeon, an expert in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He has several feathers to his academic cap- ranked 14th in Rajasthan PMT, 52nd in AIPMT, 3rd in Rajasthan PGET, 65th in AIPGET; and an MRCS degree (Edinburgh).
