While I was on a live stream @helptogrow talking about how to better understand our customers using Instagram, I made a reflection on something that I really want to share with you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ive seen quite often lately on social media this sentence: Your followers wont pay your bills, and I couldnt believe it! Really people? That is how you treat your followers?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First, your followers are part of an audience that is there, interested in you, your products or services. They are interacting with your content, liking it, commenting it, even sharing it. Some of them promote your content for fee. Do you know what that means? They might not be your customers and pay your bills yet, or never. But as they like you, they might remember you to recommend your services to a friend who needs them. Your followers see something of value in you. And that is how you treat them? Why would people buy Opera tickets when they just got to listen to it for free? How did those at the Opera feel about giving their content away for free. Why did you purchase a concert ticket to someone that you listed to for free on Spotify? This is a marketing technique called reciprocity. It’s a genuine honest exchange. I have bought numerous courses and books from people that I follow. Why? I get their content for free on their blog, instagram, YouTube but after receiving so much you want to give back. Exactly the same way that you invite people over after they have had you over. It’s in human nature. Some people use this for wrong, and that’s not reciprocity that’s manipulation. Or others will just take advantage of what you give. It does happen. But that doesn’t remove the millions of other people that are genuine. Marketing is really simple. It’s scares me sometimes how it’s just a series of steps and formulas that have been tested and tested over and over again. If you think of a recipe, it’s a series of steps, timing, and making sure you are starting with quality produce. We will be talking more about this once we complete our foundation series. But for today, this was a quick history lesson about what I think was one of the most genius move for the Opera to broadcast on Radio. Also posting this for the 3rd time because public is a lot better than pubic!
