Today we remember the six UNC alumni lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001: Karleton Fyfe ’92, Mary Lou Hague ’96, Andrew King ’83, Ryan Kohart ’98, Dora Menchaca ’78 (MSPH) and Christopher Quackenbush ’79. Each year on the anniversary, the GAA places flowers at the 9/11 Memorial Garden on Stadium Drive between 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., the times when hijacked planes struck the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Travel Tuesday – Miller’s Park Sculptures, Lucas, Kansas Roy and Clara Miller created their park as a rest stop and recreation area along Kansas Highway 18, both for the citizens of Lucas and the public. They welcomed travelers, offered fresh water, eventually built cabins, and added playground equipment and picnic tables. Most importantly, they shared their small sculpture-filled park with visitors. They built miniature buildings for a tiny town and fashioned a rock garden of rocks and shells they gathered on their travels. During the 1920s, it was a Lucas gathering spot. Time passed, and the property was eventually sold in 1969 to settle the estate. The sculptures were moved to Hays, Kansas and became a tourist site known as Frontier Village. Initially a popular attraction, the effort faded and the sculptures were left to languish, but through the generosity and vision of Henry Schwaller IV, Miller’s Park returned to Lucas, Kansas. In 2012 and 2013, Kohler Foundation took on the preservation of Miller’s Park. The foundation was joined by a team of enthusiastic local volunteers, art conservators from Houston and Los Angeles, and preservation technicians to preserve the remaining forty-five sculptures. Miller’s Park now has a permanent location adjacent to the Garden of Eden in Lucas at 317 E. 2nd Street and is open daily. Happy Women’s Equality Day! Have you ever heard of Belva Lockwood? If you haven’t, you should! After succumbing to a fever of some sort in 1705, Irish woman Margorie McCall was hastily buried to prevent the spread of whatever had done her in. Margorie was buried with a valuable ring, which her husband had been unable to remove due to swelling. This made her an even better target for body snatchers, who could cash in on both the corpse and the ring. The evening after Margorie was buried, before the soil had even settled, the grave-robbers showed up and started digging. Unable to pry the ring off the finger, they decided to cut the finger off. As soon as blood was drawn, Margorie awoke from her coma, sat straight up and screamed. The fate of the grave-robbers remains unknown. One story says the men dropped dead on the spot, while another claims they fled and never returned to their chosen profession. Margorie climbed out of the hole and made her way back to her home. Her husband John, a doctor, was at home with the children when he heard a knock at the door. He told the children, “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.” When he opened the door to find his wife standing there, dressed in her burial clothes, blood dripping from her finger but very much alive, he dropped dead to the floor. He was buried in the plot Margorie had vacated. Margorie went on to re-marry and have several children. When she did finally die, she was returned to Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, Ireland, where her gravestone still stands. Today is National Police Remembrance Day. A small, socially distanced ceremony was held at the police memorial on St Kilda Rd today. People were able to attend virtually. As part of our walk today we took it in this afternoon. It is well within our 5km. Here are some pictures our walking companion took. During todays ceremony a plaque was unveiled in honour of the four police officers who died during what was supposed to be a routine car compound on the Eastern Freeway, near Kew. It was an awful night. Early in the pandemic and many of us watched TV as is unfolded. Killed in the accident were officers Josh Prestney, Glen Humphris, Kevin King and Lynette Taylor. Kevin had strong links to 3121 and many people know the family. Josh attended Xavier. His mum worked at Burke Hall. People in and around 3121/3122/3101 may be familiar with the family. Scholar Jonathan Ned Katz has referred to the A Squeeze of the Hand chapter in Herman Melvilles Moby-Dick as no doubt one of the most erotically suggestive scenes of male-male intimacy in American literature.⠀ -⠀ Although married to a woman, Melville has been the subject of discussion among scholars of LGBT history, such as Jonathan Ned Katz in Gay American History (1976) and Rictor Norton in My Dear Boy: Gay Love Letters Through the Centuries (1998). This marker is a bit confusing for me. John O. Martell was killed in 1861 at age 18. I can find zero information on him. Even his FindaGrave entry says he was a civil war soldier (note the Union carved into his stone and the flag) BUT the civil war didn’t start until April of that year, he was killed in February. माणिकदुर्ग - चिपळूण तालुक्यातील मांडकी गावाच्या मागील डोंगरावर असलेला माणिकदूर्ग लोकांच्या विस्मृतीत गेला होता. पुण्याचे इतिहास संशोधक सचिन जोशी यांनी केलेल्या संशोधनामुळे हा गड प्रकाशात आला. प्राचिन काळी पालशेत बंदरात उतरलेला माल घाटमार्गांनी कर्हाडच्या बाजारपेठेत जात असे. या घाटमार्गावर लक्ष ठेवण्यासाठी माणिकदूर्गाची योजना करण्यात आली होती. माणिकगडाला दुर्गेचा डोंगर या नावानेही ओळखले जाते. विजयनगर साम्राज्यात माणिकदूर्ग किल्ला होता. पवार नामक व्यक्तीच्या ताब्यात हा किल्ला होता. पालशेत बंदरात उतरलेला माल विविध घाटमार्गाने कर्हाडच्या बाजारपेठेत जात असे. या मार्गावर लक्ष ठेवण्यासाठी नवतेदूर्ग, कासारदूर्ग, माणिकदूर्ग, भैरवगड इ. किल्ल्यांची मालिका होती. आदिलशहाने विजयनगरचे साम्राज्य जिंकल्यावर हे किल्ले त्याच्या ताब्यात गेले. हे किल्ले त्याने पाडले; यामुळे आज हे किल्ले इतिहासात जमा झाले आहेत. मांडकी गावामागील गर्द झाडी असलेल्या डोंगरावर माणिकदूर्गचे अवशेष विखुरलेले आहेत. किल्ल्यात प्रवेश केल्यावर उजवीकडे गेल्यावर किल्ल्याच्या टोकावर सुकाई देवीचे मंदिर आहे. या मंदिराकडे जाताना ठिकठिकाणी झाडांच्या बुंध्यात अडकलेले व गवतात लपलेले किल्ल्याच्या तटबंदीचे अवशेष दिसतात. सुकाई देवी मंदिराच्या मागिल बाजूस एक गोलाकार उंचवटा दिसतो. तेथे गाडला गेलेला बुरुज असण्याची शक्यता आहे. या बुरुजाला वळसा घालून किल्ला उजवीकडे ठेवत अवघड वाटेने काही अंतर गेल्यावर ५ लेणी पाहायला मिळतात. तिथून परत किल्ल्यात प्रवेश केला त्या ठिकाणी येऊन डावीकडे गेल्यावर (किल्ल्यावरील सुकाई देवीचे मंदिराच्या विरूध्द बाजूच्या) टोकावर पाण्याची २ टाक आहेत. त्यापैकी एका टाक्यावर यक्ष प्रतिमा कोरलेल्या आहेत. याशिवाय गडावरच्या गर्द झाडीत विविध प्रकारचे पक्षी व फुलपाखर पाहायला मिळतात. #gadvaari #raigadfort #shivnerifort #monsoontreks #lovetrekking #trekdiaries #trekwomen #trekkers #kothaligad #trekkingfamily #mahulifort #kalsubai #kalavantinfort #petervangeit #maharashtra_trekking_memes #sahyadri_kille_official #laibharimanus #dongaryatra_official #dongaryatra #maharashtra_desha #jiddimaratha #trekkinglife #gadvedetrekkers #gadvede #jkv #_the_great_maratha_96_k #trekkingntravelling #trekking.lover #nustabhatkantii_ #maharashtra_forts - @gadvaari on Instagram
