You can see, my table was literally and also figuratively stacked to the max. I’d say the swirling chaos hasn’t really straightened out, but I’ve learned something new everyday since then.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Finding small blessings from the experiences we’ve had has been our current hobby. As I’ve said before, I’m a glass-half-full kind of girl, so my business partner hubby and I recently counted a few blessings that we can now appreciate.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👍🏻 We learned that if you can work with your spouse to pivot your business during a pandemic, while also homeschooling our young children, without getting a divorce, we can make it through anything.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👍🏻 We learned that our clients are so extremely supportive and we have attracted the exact ones that we have always dreamed of having (we love you 😘). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👍🏻 We also learned that our kiddos needed so much more from us. We had to be so in tune with meeting their emotions during the rollercoaster too. We had to pivot as parents and find an alternative learning environment for all of our mental health. Here we go again... 🤯 These are just some of the worries that have been whizzing around my mind after watching the Government announcements yesterday. I’ve made no secret of the fact I struggle with anxiety & although I’m feeling much better than a few months ago, this ‘second wave’ will certainly challenge that. I think it’s so crucial we talk about our mental health. Whilst it’s great to want to remain positive & ‘just get through this’ it’s also important to admit if you’re not OK. I am 𝐧𝐨𝐭 an expert on this by any stretch, but some of the things I can recommend to help with anxious thought patterns are: 🔹 Write worries down, even overnight, to try to avoid them taking over your brain 🔹 Discuss how you’re feeling with a loved one 🔹 Exercise regularly - a mixture of HIIT & yoga works best for me 🔹 Be conscious of your diet & alcohol consumption and how this affects how you’re feeling 🔹 Practice mindfulness or meditation, learn about breathing techniques - the @calm app is great for this 🔹 Schedule time every week to do something nice for YOU. Doesn’t have to be big - mine is a bubble bath & face mask 🔹 Take a break from social media & screens, including news sites if the news contributes to your anxiety 🔹 If you feel that your anxiety or worries are getting to the point you can’t cope, always seek professional help. Dairy has proven to be detrimental to the environment, our health, & the welfare of animals. If you have yet to be educated on the inner workings of the dairy industry, go on YouTube & watch the powerfully informative video titled “Dairy is Scary” by Erin Janus which sums up the dairy industry in only 5 minutes. Humans are the only species that exploits another species for their milk. About 65-70% of the global population is lactose intolerant. Why? Because humans’ bodies aren’t built to digest cow’s milk. Cows can only produce milk when they’re pregnant, which means dairy cows are pregnant all the time. Once they’ve been used to the point of becoming spent & unable to produce milk anymore or even stand up properly, they’re sent to slaughter for meat production as they are no longer useful to the dairy industry. Don’t even get me started on the legal amount allowed of blood, hormones, & pus that make it into your milk. Do yourself, the earth, & the animals a favor: try plant milk. 🔥Feeling Full While Dieting!😌 . 🌭While cutting back on some calories, your body is going to send out hunger cues because it’s use to have more calories than what you’re giving it! You will get hungry, it will suck at times!... but here’s a couple tips to help while cutting back on calories! Also, I’m not saying to ignore your hunger signals. You should eat if you are hungry. When you do eat, try to make it a nutritious meal/snack! . 🥩Protein! Literally, I’ve talked about protein so much lately. I always shoot for 20-30g or protein PER meal or snack! Not only will protein help build muscle, but it will also help you keep that feeling of satiety longer! . 🥦Vegetable Volume! Eat lots and lots of veggies! They are super low calorie and you can add a lot of volume to your meals without adding a lot of calories which ups the satiety level! . ☕️Coffee! Caffeine in general is just my favorite! 😻Coffee is a known appetite suppressant. Coffee and other caffeine supplements literally help feelings a fullness. Who would have thought!? . 💧Drink Water! Feeling of dehydration can causes us to think that we’re hungry and possibly eating when we really don’t have to. Drink and stay hydrated! . 🍬Chew Gum! This causes our body to think we are chewing on some calories! Seriously, if you like to chew your calories, gum is great for you to munch! . Last but not least....RELAX! 😅Whether it’s fat loss or muscle gain, this stuff TAKES TIME! There’s no magical pill, no magical wand you can wave to help teleport you to your goals. I used to feel so afraid of losing my social life if I decided to stop going out for drinks & getting wasted with my friends. I didn’t wanna make anyone uncomfortable, or have to explain my decision not to drink. Before I lived with IBS myself I had always assumed it was just about bloating and embarrassing toilet habits. I never realised how debilitating the anxiety around symptoms, fear of foods, poor body image and all the other stuff that comes with the illness could be. People (doctors included based on personal experience) can be very quick to brush off IBS as they don’t realise the impact it has on our mental health as well as physical. It has the ability to control our lives if we let it, but we have the ability to take that control back. IBS may always be a part of us, but it doesn’t have to be the biggest part - we just need to invest the time into understanding our body and minds and freeing ourselves from the anxiety-symptom cycle. Yeah, that’s gonna be a “nah” for your gut, bro. See, your gut bacteria thrive off diversity and want to munch on allllll different kinds of things. So, make sure you’re getting in a wide variety of different foods all the time 🚩ALL HAIL FIBER: The average American’s fiber intake is pitifully low. How’s yours, eh?! I recommend doing a little tracking on the app My Fitness Pal and see where you end up after a few days. I recommend at least 35 grams of the good stuff PER DAY 🚩PROBIOTIC POWER: Probiotics are powerhouses when it comes to your digestion! A little goes a long way, so don’t think you have to go swimming a bowl of kimchi. Sometimes I forget just how hypervigilant we have to be as celiacs, especially when out to eat with friends and family at non-100% gluten free restaurants. We don’t have the luxury of completely relaxing and letting our guards down like they often do.⠀ ⠀ This is because not only do we have to plan for the experience ahead of time (calling ahead to ask questions, researching the restaurant, talking with our server), but we also have to look out for other potential hazards as well.⠀ ⠀ Hazards like a very young child sitting next to you and wanting to touch your face after handling bread. They don’t know any better, of course, but you have to keep a watchful eye on them to ensure they don’t accidentally gluten you. (This has happened to me before.)⠀ ⠀ Or when you’re celebrating something special and you go to cheers someone who’s drinking a (very full) beer. You are so cognizant of what’s going on that you instinctively know to make sure your glass is up higher than theirs so no beer can potentially splash into your beverage.⠀ ⠀ Or what about that basket of bread that comes to the table before the meal? It’s usually placed in the middle of the table and people will be reaching across for a piece. It’s silly, but just a few crumbs unknowingly landing in your glass of water is all it takes to get glutened.⠀ ⠀ It all seems silly, but this just goes to illustrate the level of awareness we have to maintain when living the celiac lifestyle. One of my greatest tips as a neurologist/neuroscientist is, when you want to achieve something, is do not contantly force your brain to do things it doesnt want to do. Our brain responds much better to positive associations so, instead, try to make things more enjoyable. Ive written a few posts previously about habits which depend on a cue-response-reward cycle (scroll down on my page for more info). The rewarding aspect that follows the habit is what strengthens the connections in the brain and reinforces that particular activity. This means that the immediate rewards provided by eating chocolate or watching your favourite TV shows make it much easier to form such habits than something where the reward is delayed (e.g. studying or working towards a long-term goal). To faciliate formation of those long-term delayed-reward habits, you can pair them with an activity that provides an immediate reward (as long as that activity doesnt distract or disturb the habit itself). Those positive associations are a great tool to get started and keep you going until your brain starts to realise and reap the long-term rewards. Above are some examples of things to do. Happy #TipTuesday! This week we’re talking about #tonguetie 👅 . Tongue ties, lip ties, and buccal/cheek ties (called Tethered Oral Tissues or TOTs), are very common, but often misunderstood, causes of breastfeeding/bodyfeeding difficulties. Without proper support, ties can adversely affect nursing and even bottle feeding! Identifying ties takes a lot of specialized training that most pediatricians and even some lactation providers do not have. Ties cannot be assessed based only on what your baby’s mouth looks like; instead a skilled provider will perform a functional assessment to see how the tongue is working (or not). How do you know if a tongue tie assessment is even needed? The following signs are very common, but often missed or misunderstood by parents and pediatricians: •mouth will not open wide enough •your nipples are chapped/bleeding •weight gain is slow and/or your baby’s weight percentile drops significantly •acid reflux/silent reflux •colic and gassiness •snoring/open mouth breathing •major nursing strike/supply decrease between 6-12 weeks •lip blisters/sucking blisters •even difficulty with tummy time & sitting in car seats may be a sign! . 🙋🏼♀️I have to admit, I love waking up to pancakes🥞 or waffles🧇. I LOVE syrup. Like LOVE it.😛 . 👨👩👧👦Growing up, my family would joke with my mom and I, “Would you like some waffles with that syrup?” because we would pour it on, creating a syrup lake like effect. . Haha okay, my mouth is watering🤤 as I am writing this out, so you know it’s true. . ❗️Then one day, I found out that “maple syrup” is typically not maple at all, it is corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, etc with a dash of maple flavoring.😭 . ❗️Corn anything that is non organic, non GMO contains glyphosate which can cause health issues in the body. And that’s not all, no that’s not all. When it’s made into syrup, either corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) then it can cause major blood sugar spikes, which can wreak some serious havoc in the body.😱 . 🤔Okay, so what about a HFCS, sugar free option? I have seen this other brand recommended by a lot of people who enjoy counting macros. However, it contains some ingredients that are a cause for concern.👎🏼 . ❗️Sucralose is chemically made and it s 600x’s sweeter than sugar, I would highly recommend researching📚 for yourself why you don’t want sucralose in your diet. . ❗️Lastly, both of these contain food dyes and natural + artificial flavors - something else we definitely steer clear of.🙅🏼♀️ . 🔄As for the swap, you can find it at Costco and a little bit 🤏🏼goes a long way. I mean, not to get all morbid on you but these are straight up facts! My dear, your body changing is sign that you are LIVING. Wrinkles, grey hairs... what a gift to get older and get to experience life year after year. They are markings of moments and experiences youve been through. Why are we always trying to eradicate any sign of life? These should be celebrated as milestones! And for the mama whos given birth and struggling with postpartum body image - you are good enough. There is no going back. You and your body have been forever changed by bringing life into this world. Whether you go back to prebaby size or not - embrace the new identity that you are in. We hold on so much to the past - past body, past life, past experiences, etc. Sometimes we yearn for things to be how they were before kids. But you are never going back - not to that body and not to who you were. Why does diet culture make us feel like thats a bad thing? Its not! Your body, regardless of its size, should be celebrated, not targeted! So today, and every day, I celebrate it for you and hope that this post gives you enough courage to celebrate your body, too! If trying to find your tribe of infertility warriors seems hard...trying to find #ChildfreeAfterInfertility warriors is like searching for a needle in a haystack. The majority feel shamed into silence. Because....let me tell you....NO ONE WANTS TO GLORIFY THIS LIFESTYLE. Not your REs Not your friends Not your family No one wants to celebrate a non-milestone. No one wants to cheer someone on that quit. No one wants to hear that you can give something YOUR ALL and still not end up with what you originally wanted. No matter how bad the odds are stacked against you....quitting is for losers. Or so you thought.... And I get it....choosing this lifestyle places you in the minority. As a bit of an outcast. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve helped clients avoid courses of antibiotics for a brewing urinary tract infection (UTI). I’m not against antibiotics (they can be life-saving) but my goal is to give you other natural options and explain the rationale. UTIs are typically caused by a specific type of E coli bacteria colonizing the urinary tract. A combination of d-mannose, uva ursi, hydration, and alkalizing the urine can help! 1️⃣ D-mannose is a natural sugar that doesn’t get absorbed in the human digestive tract but instead provides desirable food for bacteria. This causes them to release their grip of the urinary tract lining and get flushed out in urine. 👋🏻 Hence the importance of drinking plenty of fresh filtered water. SCORE? Bacteria 0, Human 1 💪🏼 👉🏻Dosing needs to be discussed with your practitioner but on average, 1-2g daily has been shown to help with prevention and 2 x daily to counter an existing infection. 2️⃣ Similarly, cranberry metabolites impair e-coli adhesion to the urinary tract wall. But make sure it’s cranberry EXTRACT and not cranberry JUICE, which is high in sugar and feeds bacteria! 3️⃣ Uva ursi, an herbal anti-microbial, is believed to be more effective at an alkaline pH which is why it is encouraged to eliminate (at least temporarily) anything acidic (see the list of avoids in the post pic). 👉🏻At the first “twinge”, uva ursi at the maximum recommended dose on the supplement label can help stop it in its track. ⚠️ NOTE: While d-mannose is quite safe for everyone, uva ursi is not recommended for children or those with liver disease. 4️⃣ Also important – if sexually active, please urinate as soon as possible after intercourse. As we approach the cooler months, or the not so hot Im melting months in Florida, dry skin becomes a concern for many babies. Here are some simple ways to help you take care of your little one’s skin during the coming months: 1. Bathe no more than once a day, or even better every other day. Too much bathing can strip your skin of oil and moisture. 2. Do not wipe down your baby in between baths (diaper area excluded), for the same reason as above. 3. Lukewarm water 4. Quick baths about 5- 10 minutes 5. Use a gentle soap. 6. Apply moisturizer while their skin is a little damp, this helps the skin both seal and absorb moisture better. 7. Apply moisturizer 2-3 times per day. Nothing with a lot of fragrance. If your baby has severe dry skin or eczema talk to your pediatrician to figure out a game plan to help everyone stay scratch free during the coming dry season. Getting sober doesn’t make you boring. Being hungover all day does. Being labeled as boring was one of my biggest fears getting sober. The very word sober even sounds like “so bored”. What would happen to “Fun Jen”? Would people still want to hang out with me if I didn’t drink? If they knew who I really was? It prevents a lot of us from ever trying to get sober or take a break from alcohol. But in reality weve been fooled into believing that we needed alcohol to have fun, when this is totally untrue. The years of marketed conditioning had us associating alcohol with having a good time, being funny, giving us liquid courage, and helping us relax. We believed that ‘Life without alcohol is boring’. Dragon Fruit... The pitaya is one of nature’s most unique plants, with a flower like an explosion of flame and a fruit like a pink rosebud. Widely known as dragon fruit, it is indigenous to Central America but is also grown and exported from several Southeast Asian countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam. The dragon fruit is actually one of several cactus species and, just like its relatives, has a succulent stem that provides a uniquely delicious fruit with moisture in the arid climates where it typically grows. Dragon fruit looks like a soft pineapple with spikes, and can have either pink, red or yellow skin and white or red flesh. The fruit also has overlaid or scale-like leaves, similar to an artichoke, and an abundance of small, black edible seeds. Its flavour is mildly sweet, like a blend of kiwifruit and pear, and has a crunchy texture. While the fruit may seem a little strange at first, its easy to prepare. Begin by slicing the dragon fruit lengthwise. Afterward, you can remove the flesh, or slice the fruit further into quarters and peel the leathery skin. pH plays an important role for proper skin function. Collectively this is known as the acid mantle. Many essential functions of the skin occur at a lower pH. Our skin is naturally between pH of 4-6. The pH is determined by various genetic and external factors. Internally: age, genetics, gender (men have lower pH), race (darker skin has lower pH), sweat, sebum, and anatomic location all contribute. Externally: cleansers and topicals used have the strongest influence. Our skin is capable of buffering pH through production of fatty acids (sebum), natural moisturizing factors (epidermis) and other amino acids. The more acidic pH prevents bacteria overgrowth and allows optimal function of enzymes for making intercellular lipids like ceramides, and for proper desquamation. Elevated pH from aging, cleansing, and certain skin conditions such as acne and eczema leads to breakdown of skin barrier and further contributing to skin inflammation. Growing up my shopping experience went something like this👇 - Finds a pretty skirt - Buys it in a size that fits but is also tight - Uses it as motivation to lose 10 pounds and fit into it - Holiday comes. Weight was not lost. Doesnt fit into skirt comfortably😣 - Feels self conscious in skirt. Feels horrible about self😥 Distracted form being fully present and enjoying holiday to fullest potential. Can you relate🙋♀️? You cant be fully present or feel good about yourself🚫 if you are wearing clothes that are uncomfortable. This year, choose to treat yourself with kindness and self care and buy clothes that fit your here and now body🙏🏻. You deserve to feel good in every size whether your body will change in the future or not💃. Stop living for a month form now or year from now. Live comfortably NOW💯! That being said - I know that not all stores are size inclusive and I believe everyone deserves to find clothes they like and are comfortable for their body size. Please remember: the fact that stores choose not to be inclusive of ALL sizes does mean your body is the problem! Clothes should fit your body, not the other way around. . . . Have you ever felt like if you just had more willpower, you could stop binging, lose weight, and FINALLY be the best version of yourself? You spend all evening meal prepping all your healthy food, and promise yourself that this week will not end in a binge. Its Monday, youre feeling motivated and proud of yourself. Your coworker brings donuts to the office, and when offered one you gleefully answer Im okay, Im sticking to my meal plan this week. You feel empowered by your willpower and tell yourself this time will be different. But as Wednesday creeps up, your meal prepped chicken and rice doesnt sound as satisfying. You can hear the Burger King across the street calling your name. The inner dialogue begins Should I? Its so bad though. Im doing so good this week. But it sounds SO good. You finally cave and get it. You eat your burger and fries so quickly you dont even taste it. Then youre hit with an indescribable amount of guilt. Why cant I just stick to the meal plan?! I cant believe its only Wednesday and I already messed up. Filled with disappointment in yourself, as you head home you think, well I already messed up... and stop on your way home to get a pint of ice cream. You spend the night eating the entire pint, sick to your stomach and sobbing why do I keep doing this... Girlfriend, this does not have to be your life. We are told over and over again if you just have enough willpower you can lose weight and stop binging. Not only is weight influenced by much more than just what we eat, willpower is not even a part of the equation. You stop binging by making peace with food, eliminating food rules, fueling your body consistently throughout the day, dealing with your emotions and being kind to yourself. Let’s talk detox pathways! It is important to understand all 5 of their roles in cleansing the body. Skin: The skin is our largest organ. If our gut or body is suffering, our skin is our alarm system. Environmental toxins also play a role in our skin’s health. Colon: Our gastrointestinal tract is over 30 feet long. It is VERY important to be going to the bathroom at least 2x per day. In regards to parasites, they may cause constipation or be a result of constipation — there are ways to get regular before parasite cleansing such as juicing, supplementation, reiki, and meridian point massaging. Constipation can also be due to food sensitivities, low stomach acid (HCL), and many other factors. Lymph: Our lymphatic system is our largest system. Stimulating it with movement or the various methods listed above assists the lymphatic system to rid cellular waste. Kidneys: Kidney filtration goes like this — pee in a cup as soon as you wake up — leave the cup out for 24 hours — look for sediment in that cup after 24 hours — if there is sediment, your kidneys are filtering cellular waste, if not this is something to work on thru eating more fruits and utilizing herbs. This is not necessary to start cleansing. Liver: I notice that my liver is happier when I do not eat fats until lunch time. Everyone is different though — I had to work up to this & this may not be an option for some. Eating nutrient dense foods and supporting our liver with herbs, castor oil packs, and other various methods help open up its detox pathway. Detox is not comfortable. And remember, you do not need to force yourself to do these things everyday — focus on one thing at a time — pick and choose what to do each day. I also need to mention the importance of breath. No need to obsess anymore! · In the middle of conversation. If you’re constantly distracted by food thoughts when you’re talking to other people, that’s frustrating. you don’t have to live your life like that forever! · 24/7. If you pre-load days of meals into MyFitnessPal at a time, wake up & plan what you’ll eat all day, wonder what you’ll eat at your next meal EVERY time you eat…. That’s exhausting!!! Obviously this is not an all-inclusive list, but a general outline to help you assess where you are in your food freedom journey. DIET AND ACNE 🧀 . It takes more than Just skincare to achieve clear skin. Diet is possibly the most important factor to consider if you want to achieve clear skin. . Eating dairy and sugary foods increase levels of insulin, which is a hormone that shuttles sugar out of your blood and into your cells where it can be used for energy. This stimulates the release of other hormones, such as insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). This increase in hormones leads to hyperkeratinization and excess sebum production which worsen acne. . Iodine is a trace mineral commonly found in seaweed, seafood, iodized salt, fortified bread, in vegetables and fruits grown in iodine-rich soil, and in many vitamin supplements. As it’s excreted, iodide irritates the pores and causes acne flare-ups. It’s especially troublesome to the susceptible pores in acne-prone skin. Large enough amounts can induce acne in even skin that’s normally clear.
