The high-profile exhibition Les Primitifs flamands, which took place in Bruges in 1902, left a lasting impression on both Gustave Van de Woestyne and his artist friends. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This portrait The Farmer (or Evening) was painted after Van de Woestyne had left Sint-Martens-Latem for good. The refined, detailed realism of the farmer’s head and his serene posture call to mind the Flemish Primitives. At the same time, the austere backdrop and use of large swathes of colour already contain hints of modernism. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The face of the figure, undeniably rooted in rural Sint-Martens-Latem, bears an unmistakable resemblance to Joos Vijd, who commissioned the Ghent Altarpiece. Waiting for Her Man 30x40 A new piece headed for the C.M. Russell Museum Art in Action event. This one is a little different for me. Delivering a painting last year to a collector near Jackson Hole I happened across this sight. Immediately I pulled over the truck jumped out with the camera and commenced shooting. The clouds where putting on a display of hide and seek light requiring lots of shots. Looking out across the sage flats I was overcome with the vision of a native encampment and someone waiting. Charles Russell often worked that way and one never knows when the inspiration kicks in. Thats all it took and I had to paint it.
