Of Rhyme and Rhythm Tapping feet, wiggling hips... I close my eyes and let the beats course through every inch of my skin, leaving behind goosebumps at their wake. The sounds fold themselves into honeycomb structures in my brain. I allow them complete control, for quaking, gyrating, ricocheting, as if dancing in halls bursting with gold, their vibrations in states of contagion, preaching their hymns and rhythms. They relish the feeling of being the ones that have a power of a scorch, so feverish, that can make someone’s day or break it. As if built from the heat of a thousand suns, to tune me headlong into this lyrical trance Into lasting echoes of the stereo’s blast In circular lanes as our car roared past Dim rock shows and obscure band fests, Where black-lipped musicians we met Selling logo patches, posters and trinkets Who enticed us into intense music quests That we travelled in smoke-hazed practise rooms With neighbours screaming the amplifier’s abuse Painstakingly covered riffs and chords That we’d proudly replicate on record And traverse light years of sax, bass and drum To duel with genres and genres of albums They all came back, that mellifluous romance quite by chance When that CD I found refrained the sound of teenage arrogance. . . . The violent red stained my shaking hands. The color burned in my mind along with what I had just done. A sickness crawled within me as I tried to wash the stains off but, just as in Macbeth, the stains stayed etched into my mind - an eternal reminder of the act I had committed. “D-did I k-kill h-him?” I stuttered out, afraid of whatever the response would be. I heard a deep sigh, at this moment, my hearing had intensified and I could hear any slightest sound. “No, bella, you didn’t.” And suddenly, it feels as if the dawn light had kissed the colors into being in the forest. Just being there brings the soul into sweet surrender, at one with nature, vibrant yet relaxed. Every fragrance is fresh, like the page of a new book. Each burst of birdsong is unique, a live chorus to waken the mind, to shake off whatever sleepiness remains. Thoughts and feet wander, lungs fill, time rolls by in its silent and endless way. I latch on to the source of solace, and drift into a peaceful sleep. So, how was the snippet, readers?
