A 2017 meta-analysis by Williams and colleagues examined all of the research comparing periodized and non-periodized training, finding that periodized training tends to produce larger strength gains (d = 0.43). After further adjusting for nested effects funnel plot asymmetry, the effect size decreased (d = 0.23 ± 0.05) but was still significant. In other words, periodized resistance training tends to cause larger strength gains than non-periodized training, but the overall effect is pretty small. Simple, right? Not necessarily. A drawback of periodization research is that periodized groups generally get to train at higher peak intensities than non-periodized groups. In other words, a non-periodized group may train with 75% loads for 9 weeks, while a periodized group may train with 60% loads for 3 weeks, 75% for 3 weeks, and 90% for three weeks. Overall, volume and average intensity are matched, but only the periodized group gets the opportunity to train with near-max loads before post-training testing. In other words, the studies may not be testing the effects of periodization itself, but rather the effects of peak training intensity. A pair of studies from Antretter and colleagues (google “Antretter Hatfield System and they should pop up) are the only studies comparing periodized versus non-periodized training with volume, average intensity, and peak intensity matched. They did so by having the non-periodized group train at multiple intensities within each training session. Those studies found that periodized training didn’t lead to larger strength gains than non-periodized training. In other words, periodization may not INDEPENDENTLY improve strength gains. However, periodizing training gives you more flexibility with training designs. In other words, periodizing your training is probably still a good idea, but you shouldn’t treat it like a magic bullet. This study was previously reviewed in more depth in a 2017 issue of MASS. A few weeks ago I asked for a plan from @danielandrewsmp Sadly what we received was a plan for eradication that he refers to as aggressive suppression. Not a balanced plan to reopen our economy while also dealing with the vulnerable. Call it what you want almost every expert has raised serious concerns that your plan is too harsh and unachievable based on global evidence. This week many respected experts and community leaders have expressed their views that the draconian lockdowns and curfews and unattainable targets will do more wide spread damage that the virus it’s self. I feel genuinely that @danielandrewsmp is desperately trying to do what he thinks is best. I and most Victorians want to defeat this Virus and save lives however we can’t have a scorched earth policy driven by one individual that harms more the it protects. I feel Mr Andrews all or nothing plan is driven by his fear of failure after so many disasters such as the quarantine debacle and the lack of contract tracing resources. He has now clearly overreached in order regain the political high ground. Mr Andrews @danielandrewsmp we don’t care that mistakes were made. What we all want is for you to listen to those that want to help. Listen to the experts and community leaders. Your one man show won’t get you to where you so desperately want to be. Your spin and disregard for consultation and the crushing of Victorians democratic rights just make the job of dealing with this crisis that much harder. This fight can only be won with the strength and know how of the community. Please listen and let’s bring Victoria back from the brink while still saving lives. We can do both. If in your wisdom you feel that your way is the only option then you should resign. Stand aside please so a new leader can begin the healing and repair our communities. DEARBORN, Mich. (WDIV) A national Arab American foundation, based in Dearborn, has raised more than $180,000 to help support the ongoing relief efforts in Lebanon following the deadly explosion in August. The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) joined an effort by the Lebanon Relief Project, a nationally coordinated initiative led by the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) and the Ghassan and Manal Saab Foundation—to urgently airlift critical medical and pharmaceutical supplies and equipment to Lebanon in the aftermath of the explosion. Since the explosion, the continued fundraising efforts benefitting the Lebanon Relief Project through CAAP’s Disaster Relief Fund have resulted in over $180,000 raised so far. Funds have been used to help the Lebanon Relief Project airlift over $12.7 million in high value medications and supplies to Beirut on August 24, and most recently, over $6 million on September 29. Due to the critical need and high demand, the group now has plans to airlift more supplies in the near future. 100% of all donations raised through CAAP’s continued fundraising efforts will go towards airlifting essential supplies and equipment and supporting relief efforts in Lebanon. This latest project builds on the success of the recent CAAP campaign launched on August 5, which resulted in a $75,155 grant to the Lebanese Red Cross to support their on-the-ground relief work. The blast in Beirut on Aug. 4 killed more than 175 people, injured at least 6,000 and left tens of thousands homeless. Even before the explosion, Lebanon was dealing with increasing poverty, economic collapse and corruption, while in the midst of a pandemic. It’s still not known what sparked the fire that ignited nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate that were stored for years in Beirut’s port next to densely populated residential areas. Documents have emerged that show the country’s top leadership and security officials were aware of the stockpile. Why are we wearing masks to enter a restaurant only to take them off seconds later and why is it the people handling the money are also the ones sitting people and sometimes even serving? Does is not feel like we are living in some kind of twilight zone. And another and even more important question to ask is why are the people who in assistance living conditions the ones who are dying the most? Are they not being taken care of? Do they not get the right foods? Are they taking so many prescriptions that they no longer have a functional immune system? How many hours a day to they get to go outside and connect with the sun and stretch? Maybe now people will realize that these government funded or government regulated housing homes just do enough to keep the old alive but continue to funnel money out of them. We personally spoke with one of the higher uppers in BROOMFIELD PD and the 144mph was a bike on Saturday. Us at nationwide, we been doing cruises for the last 20 years. The majority of cars that come out respect the laws of driving and respect the officers on duty. (Not to say there not bad apples, just like what alot of people say about police ) we like when police come out and hang out with us. I wish the main uppers in the police force that call the shots would come out and see what the street beat cops see. The interaction with fellow police and car enthusiasts is awesome. We always try to tell the police that if we could talk to the uppers to figure something out more so car enthusiasts can go to bandimere more times then just once a week or to cns race track that would help out calm alot of police so called problems with (street racing) cruising. So us here at nationwide would love to sit down with some of the heads of state to help us help you guys find some better alternatives so all the Karens are happy, the police are happy and can use their resources in better things to do (real crimes- murder,etc) and so car community has a couple safe places to go to have a good time. This 1972 Ford Condor II motorcoach based on a Ford truck chassis was used by the chairman and co-founder of McLaren Engines as a trackside hospitality vehicle at various USAC, Can-Am, and F1 events in the 1970s. Earlier this year, this classic piece of McLaren history came up for auction. After 49 bids, it sold to McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown for $32,500. How does muscle activation in the bench press change with increasing loads? A 2017 study by Król and Golaś had subjects perform bench press reps with loads ranging from 70% to 100% of 1RM. The researchers used EMG to estimate muscle activation throughout the lift. The image above shows how pec, triceps, and anterior deltoid EMG changed between submaximal (70% of 1RM) and maximal loads. Overall, it suggests that muscle activation doesn’t increase similarly for all prime movers as loads increase. Specifically, the pecs may already be near maximal activation with submaximal (70%) loads, whereas the anterior deltoids, and especially the triceps, experience larger increases in activation as loads get heavier. One potential implication from this information is that specifically training the triceps may give you a bit more top-end “kick” when you’re attempting maximal lifts. Another potential implication is that bench press training for pec hypertrophy may be best accomplished with somewhat lower loads. If pec activation is near-max from the first rep of a set, even with moderate loads, training heavier (say, in the 5-8 rep range) may simply be sacrificing the number of highly stimulating reps you can accomplish for your pecs over the course of a workout. Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, Carl Sandburg Home NHS is increasing recreational access on Monday, June 1, 2020. The National Park Service (NPS) is working servicewide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and is using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis. Beginning Monday, June 1, 2020, Carl Sandburg Home NHS will increase access to park trails, most grounds, and parking lots. With public health in mind, the following areas and services will remain closed until further notice: the house, barn and barnyard, restrooms, and other structures, water fountains, Sandburg Home tours, all volunteer shifts, and all summer public programs, festivals, plays, and other special events. The park shuttle will not be running. Bring enough water for your entire visit as water fountains will not be available. Keep in mind that goats will only be visible from the barnyard fence, as the entire barn area will remain closed. Weekends are busier than weekdays. The hours of 10am-3pm are busy seven days a week. “Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is a small historic site in a small rural community. Our 90,000 annual visitors come here from every state in the country. Summer is one of our busiest times,” said Superintendent Polly Angelakis. “By working together to follow social distancing and other CDC guidelines, visitors and staff can remain safe. Can stretching before training decrease muscle growth? - A 2017 study used a within-subject design to answer this question. The subject performed unilateral knee extensions for 4 sets to failure, twice per week for 10 weeks. For each subject, one leg performed those knee extensions without prior stretching, and one leg performed those knee extensions following some pretty intense static stretching before the first set: 2 sets of 25 seconds, at a discomfort level of 8 (on a 0-10 scale). - Strength gains were similar between conditions, but the legs in the non-stretching condition experienced larger increases in vastus lateralis cross-sectional area: 12.7 ± 7.2% v. 7.4 ± 3.7%. In fact, all but one of the subjects experienced more quad growth in their non-stretching leg. This difference in hypertrophy may have been driven by the effects of stretching on performance: subjects averaged almost seven more reps per session with their non-stretching leg. - The biggest takeaway ISN’T that stretching is bad. The biggest takeaway is that any stretching you do pre-training should not be intense enough or take place close enough to your working sets to negatively affect performance. If you do some light stretching, or if you stretch early in your warm-up (so performance has time to rebound before you start your work sets), you should be fine. - Study reviewed: Effect of the flexibility training performed immediately before resistance training on muscle hypertrophy, maximum strength and flexibility by Junior et al. - This study was previously reviewed in more depth in a 2017 issue of MASS. Squalene, a natural organic compound sourced primarily from shark liver oil, is most commonly used by pharmaceutical companies to produce cosmetics and sunscreens. But the substance also plays a valuable part in vaccine development for the way in which it acts as an “adjuvant”—that is, a pharmacological agent that increases the strength of certain medicines by boosting the immune response in recipients. In short, shark liver oil helps make vaccines stronger. And that, of course, is bad news for sharks—particularly at a time when every major country in the world is scrambling to develop and produce a coronavirus vaccine on a global scale. This could help us take advantage of solar energy in cities where space for solar panels may be limited. . “If we’ve done our job, no one will even know that they’re there,” says Hunter McDaniel at UbiQD, a materials manufacturing firm in the US. He and his colleagues have developed transparent solar panels that are indistinguishable from regular glass. . Test installations, involving panels that are 1 square metre in size, are under way in buildings in the US and the Netherlands. The panels have a power conversion efficiency of 3.6 per cent, a measure of how much sunlight is converted into electricity. Opaque solar panels, in comparison, have efficiencies between 15 and 20 per cent. . These transparent panels are made from two layers of glass glued together with a polymer that contains nanoparticles known as quantum dots. With a core of copper indium sulphide and a shell of zinc sulphide, these quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that can manipulate light. . When the nanoparticles are excited by exposure to UV light, they release photons that travel along the transparent panel towards its edge. The perimeter is fitted with solar cells, which convert the photons into electrical current. Hundreds of thousands of people have been given two Chinese COVID-19 vaccine candidates as part of an emergency program, without a single case of infection or adverse effects, a senior official of a state-owned vaccine developer has said. The two vaccines, developed by China National Biotec Group (CNBG), are expected to enter the market as soon as this December, and two shots will cost less than 1,000 yuan (about 146 U.S. dollars), said Zhou Song, the companys general legal counsel. They are still undergoing phase three trials for safety and efficacy - usually the last step before regulatory approval - in more than 10 other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Peru, Morocco, Argentina, and Jordan, since the epidemic has been basically put under control in China. The two vaccine candidates, together with another one developed by Beijing-based Sinovac, have been approved for civilian emergency use after reliable results in phase one and phase two trials. Tens of thousands of people vaccinated have traveled to countries and regions with high risks of COVID-19. No one has been infected so far, and this proved the effectiveness of the vaccines, Zhou said. How long does it take to generate antibodies after one gets vaccinated? Trump has repeatedly spoken of bringing law and order to cities that are full of “anarchy and mayhem.” Biden, on the other hand, emphasized that the crime rate dropped while he was the vice president, and a surge of murders happened under Trump’s watch. In reality, most types of crime decreased this summer, while serious violent crimes, such as aggravated assault and murder, increased. Criminologists generally caution against looking for simple causes to explain crime trends or drawing broad conclusions from a few months of data, and those cautions are even more important since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which introduced unfamiliar patterns. And yet that hasn’t stopped politicians and pundits from pointing fingers at what they believe caused the increase in violent crime rates—the protests against police violence, movements to defund the police and efforts to release people from overcrowded jails and prisons ravaged by coronavirus are just a few of the alleged culprits. But The Marshall Project and Vox have parsed findings from January to June, as well as decades prior for comparison, and the data does not support that these are the causes of a rise in violent crime. Understanding what drives crime rates is complicated because there’s no single cause or answer. What is known, however, is that sensational media reports and misleading statements from politicians can blow the degree of violence out of proportion and make the public believe that crime is increasing, even when it isn’t. The majority of the Fresno City Council decided Thursday to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom to ask for permission to open indoor dining, and effectively killed a proposed approach to allow all businesses to open citywide. The letter’s supporters said it was the best way to work within the system and safely open restaurants and other businesses that are restricted under orders related to the coronavirus. The letter got a 5-2 approval from the council. Many businesses closed in March after local and state orders in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
