We were both in a program called “Playwrights Lab” for artists interested in more experimental writing. We were both majoring in directing and we were all curious about the idea of “artistic possibility.” I can see you in the hallway with incense always tucked behind one ear, a leather-bound book in one hand, and a half-chewed pen in the other, always ready to record, always observing. That was the writer and the director in you. In your satchel, an August Wilson play and a Bible. Your compassion for the world was infectious, your passion for creating new worlds even more-so. You would observe human behavior and chuckle at moments that many would find curious. Chad, you filtered the world through a cosmic lens—a lens that saw men as gods and recognized godly beauty in the mundane. Without question, you knew that Black people are divine. You always saw. You always felt, you always floated through the world with a self-assuredness, crooked smile, as in constant conversation with God and the Orishas. I think you could see the other side, as if by a conduit. Your writing told me as much. Because you lived on several planes, I sometimes heard your words as parables and riddles, many of which I am still trying to decode. I would like to think you meant it to be that way. Leaving us with lasting artifacts of your whisperings from the other side. Leaving us with a legacy of the depth and beauty of Black brilliance. This is the hardest letter I have ever written. Now hear this mixture, where hip hop meets scripture... I’ve long believed that one of the greatest opportunities for change lives at the intersection of hip hop and spirituality. Drawing on the ideas and voices of some of the most influential voices in hip hop: Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, 2Pac, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Alicia Keys, and Big Sean, Pill in the Peanut Butter merges the two in a series of hip hop meditations created to inspire, invoke reflection, and expand awareness. The idea for PITPB was birthed in 2016 and through the process of pouring over interviews, recording ideas, and listening to our meditations 1,000s of times during the mastering process, @officialmarleywaters and I began to see the shifts in our own lives. My business expanded, my confidence grew, and legendary opportunities seemed to appear out of thin air. Meditating hours upon hours to some of my greatest sources of inspiration literally reprogrammed my brain through repetition of their most profound ideas and experiences. Our hope is that in PITPB you find the same divine spark within that we found. In a few days I will release my latest album, ALL LOVE EVERYTHING. It makes me think back to 10 years ago on this day when I released GOOD THINGS. There is no crystal ball to predict how my music will touch the world. I just write, record, and publish with the hope that my stories will mean something to someone else. I got lucky a few times when my words and melodies made it into the hearts of people far and wide. Some songs like GREEN LIGHTS and YOU MAKE ME SMILE offered hope while others like WHAT IM SAYING (POLITICIAN) and LIFE SO HARD contemplated harsh realities. Ultimately, I NEED A DOLLAR was received as an anthem for every young hustler trying to make it, and at the same time for the larger global financial crisis. Today we are facing yet another global crisis and I have faith we will all make it through. Left to right are some of the artists, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren. N.W.A. have performed twice at Brixton O2 Academy, first on June 9 1990 and again the following year on December 12 1991.
