This slide of a perspective drawing by Helmut Jacoby of Norman Fosters proposed extension to the Whitney Museum, New York (late 1970s) pictures the remarkable giant triangulated structure that acted as a rigid base for the tower rising above. In contrast to Breuers earlier building, Norman Foster wanted the new Whitney galleries to be open, with a full-height glazed atrium giving on to Madison Avenue. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is closed to traffic following a bomb scare, 18 September 1972. Photo by Grant Peterson for The Sydney Morning Herald. Although the scare was a hoax, it followed two terrorist bombings in Sydney only three days earlier, and the establishment of a new police bomb squad of 50 detectives and 3 policewomen. The two terrorist bombs exploded in the inner city busy with Saturday shoppers. The Sydney Morning Herald reported: Both blasts were aimed at Yugoslav travel agencies in the inner City. The first bomb tore apart three shops in crowded George Street, injured 16 people - one critically and two seriously. Minutes later, another bomb - concealed in a shopping bag - ripped apart another building three blocks away The bombings were believed to be related to the execution of Croations with Australian passports in Yugoslavia.
