Antonio Colombo: Industry Giant/Gallery Owner It was great meeting with the legend that is Antonio Colombo once again. Colombo is the son Angelo Luigi Colombo, founder of Columbus steel tubes. Most bike fans know Columbus for their legendary tubes found on countless iconic steel bikes, but the tubes, reputed for their high quality and finish, were also employed by the Bauhaus in furniture design. And Antonio extended the fusion of cycling and art when he opened his contemporary art gallery in the heart of Milan over 20 years ago. And to celebrate the Centennial of the historic tube manufacturer, Antonio has had three-part exhibition entitled Columbus Continuum. And the final exhibit Traguardo Volante, on display currently, is simply over the top, as the many artists he represents--like Zio Ziegler, Russ Pope, Sam Binkow or Ana Benaroya-- actually produced unique pieces for the show. The exhibition Friends and Friends of Friends is now open. It highlights the potential of a globally networked world using the example of a community of young artists* who promote artistic and social debates online and offline. In Afro-American painter @CheyenneJulien’s (*1994) expressionistic portraits, dreamlike figures smoke and stare, their pool-like eyes supercharged with palpable anxiety and defiance. Julien subtly pulls from art historical movements from Baroque to Romanticism to generate her own swirling, complex, hyper-emotional figuration that speaks to the weight of the Black American experience. Julien’s work flows seamlessly between the personal and political. Through her powerful portraiture, which often includes self-portraits and those of family and friends, she subtly addresses broad topics such as environmental racism, while drawing upon her lived experience as a Black woman growing up in the Bronx. Julien’s trembling figures exhibit a comic formalism – enlarged eyes, a stylistic transplant from the comics and Mangas the artist read growing up – and merge with her art historical references in perfect harmony. The result is a set of anticipatory figures encountered in challenging and uncertain environments. The exhibition is on view at Schlossmuseum Linz until 6 January 2021. It’s been an eventful few days with Cam Scale’s new street art painting outside M|Arts Precinct. The painting is a dramatic statement about the plight of whistle blowers around the world. We received a lot of great feedback, but also concerns about one interpretation given to the painting which wasn’t intended and which we felt strongly wasn’t acceptable. An immediate decision was made with the artist to paint over one part of the artwork, which will now evolve into something else. Tishan Hsu: Liquid Circuit will open on September 24 at @sculpturecenter New York. Bringing together roughly thirty key sculptures, wall reliefs, drawings and media work from 1980 to 2005, the exhibition includes architectonic paintings and sculptures from the 1980s that considered the materiality of the image in the ever-expanding digital landscape; Hsu’s first experiments in Photoshop that mark some of the earliest instances of artists using the newly available digital photo manipulation software; and a selection of the artist’s drawings and other projects. The exhibition demonstrates Hsu’s prophetic practice and exemplifies how art responds to and processes the pressing questions of its time. Feel free to use any part of this excerpt from my email (link in Bio): As you are aware, Elijah was killed at the hands of Aurora Police on August 24th, 2019 on his way home from buying tea at a convenience store. As is too often the case, especially with black men and women in this country, he was met with brutality and violence from those who put on a uniform and carry a firearm in the name of protecting the public. He pleaded to the officers that he could not breathe, that he did not have a gun, that he would not hurt a fly. His cries fell on deaf ears, as he vomited and struggled for his life. The officers caused a hemorrhage in Elijah’s neck, while cutting, bruising, and brutalizing him for fifteen minutes. He suffered a heart attack on his way to the hospital and died shortly after. Elijah’s case is not an anomaly for the Aurora Police Department. Our city ranks 8th in the United States for police killings per-capita. Aurora Police Department is one of the most brutal and deadly police departments in the United States. Aurora is already known nationwide for one horrific and senseless act of violence. We should do everything in our power to make sure we are not known for our brutal, militarized, poorly trained Police Department. Along with the reopening of Elijah McClain’s case, I ask that you demand a comprehensive retraining program for Aurora PD in de-escalating interactions and reconsider the $123,434,276 budget approved for APD for 2020. I looked for a line item on the approved budget for education in Aurora but I couldn’t even find it in the budget summary table. I assume it’s lumped in with other miscellaneous costs that are so minuscule, they are not even worth wasting the ink it would spend printing them as their own separate line items in a budget of over 380 million dollars. It is inconceivable that the tax payers of Aurora are spending over 30% of their tax money on a force that is failing to protect the public from their own officers.
