I am deeply thinking about all the folks we did not get to see this season. The volume of that void is real. Some of our most beloved friends have been unable to make it to the island this summer - we have held them in our hearts. Now, we are grieving during this time of disruption- when we lose someone during Covid we cannot gather and have a wake or a funeral. That makes for a higher level of disconnect in an already awful time. So I am writing to process- Every night we run thru the guests joining us for the evening with our team during preshift meeting- when we opened 29 years ago we consciously decided to use the term PPX instead of VIP - the term came from my internship in Provence “PPX,” personne particulierement extraordinaire, PPX served two purposes to let the team know someone who was extra magical was joining us and if someone looked at the book they would not know what the term meant. The presence of a PPX guest elevated the evening - each year I would try to explain the difference in clearer terms. It had nothing to do with the money guests spent - the true value was the relationship and connection to our style of hospitality. PPX guests are simply our people, they know us, we know them, we become family and the restaurant is a home for them. A haven they think about when we are not together - the Folks in this photo are my people - the hardest part isI have not seen any of these folks in person since this time of times began. No hugs, no distanced connection. I have seen them virtually and that has brought me great joy. Now our collective hearts ache with the news of the departure of Steve Mantelli from this realm on earth.. Steve was from another time and I looked forward to seeing him each holiday weekend and when he would come down during the summer with this amazing group. Cheers to a life full of so much LOVE, laughter - your giggle, your radio voice and the twinkle in your eyes will glow forever.. Unable to breathe while choking on a lunchtime wrap, Mike Russell remembers the scary feeling as he sat strapped into his wheelchair waiting for help. 🔒 Russell, 59, is a quadriplegic man who is paralyzed from the waist down and has very limited function below the neck. He requires around-the-clock care at Monarch House in west Windsor, run by Assisted Living of Southwestern Ontario. Polar bears are one of the most persistent mammals that live in one of the most remote and unrelenting environments on the planet. One of my goals on this side of eternity is to make the trek with my own two feet in said environment. More specifically, the desolate yet beauteous Auyuittuq National Park in the outer reaches of Canada (c’mon, google it and just let your jaw drop to the floor...I’ll wait). All in the long-term of course. In the short-term, and in an attempt to become less “city-fied ” (love ya Cincinnati) one of my goals for this year was to step up my bushcraft game. Through all the mud and murk that comes with Instagram, one of the positive aspects to this app will always be how in just a few taps of a phone screen it allows us to connect with other cool like-minded individuals—even those on the other side of the turf. My friend @bushcraftology is one of the most genuine dudes on this side of anywhere and also plans to embark on a polar expedition of his own someday.
