This photograph from the mid-1970s is one of our favorites in our new online exhibition “Reigning Queens: The Lost Photos of Roz Joseph.” The unknown subject grins knowingly at a friend over the camera’s shoulder, caught up in the joy of the moment. “Reigning Queens” is a online version of a show that was previously on display at the GLBT Historical Society Museum from October 2015 to March 2016. The suite of evocative photographs depicts San Francisco’s epic drag and costume balls of the mid-1970s. They were created by noted photographer Roz Joseph (1926–2019), whose remarkable oeuvre was rediscovered after she donated the work to the GLBT Historical Society in 2010. Joseph passed away last December. Many of the drag queens Joseph photographed were associated with an organization called the the Imperial Council of San Francisco, Inc., which annually elects a drag empress who raises funds for local charities. Founded in San Francisco in 1965 and now established in cities around the U.S. and in several other countries, the Imperial Court system is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. She moved to New York City in the 1960s as the lead singer of a psychedelic band named Crow and later joined the touring cast of the musical “Hair”. Summer then moved to Europe to pursue music and acting internationally. Europe is where she first began recording disco tracks. My “love interest” on this video asked me to marry him. He was dead serious 😳 I said no. • •DJ - This wasn’t supposed to be a serious single. It was a “double a side” with a cover I did for Bridget Jones diary, Surprisingly, it became my 4th consecutive top 10 spending 12 weeks on the charts! • • Feel free to stream/download buy etc. As of LAST year, I finally started to receive my royalties...long story short the record industry are crooks, but that’s a WHOLE other story...❤️ • • I want to thank anyone who bought this album or any of my songs.
