Robert Simpson - Blacksmith and Wheelwright, Preston 173 Plenty Road, Preston (1886 - 1891) Robert Simpson started his wheelwright and blacksmithing business at 173 Plenty Road in 1886. J. T. Peters had a coachbuilding business next door which no doubt led to much cross trade. Simpson was born in 1860 onboard the Champion of the Seas, whilst on the way to Australia. His father, David, was a military blacksmith, having served in the Crimea. The family established themselves in the Castlemaine area before moving to Preston. Robert Simpson married Mary Lilly Sutton in South Preston in 1881. Around 1890 Simpson moved to Ocean Grove, taking up work there as a blacksmith. He later lived in Geelong, Newport, Eldorado before dying in Gardenvale in 1945. Robert Crum later took over the business and in the years leading up to the First World War Edward Barklem was the wheelwright. Two of Robert Simpsons children died during the 1st World War. Nivea Men, the official men’s grooming partner to Liverpool FC, has unveiled a giant mural in Liverpool city centre to celebrate its long-standing partnership with the team and to congratulate it on its League championship win. Devised by Carat UK and Posterscope together with Mural Republic, the striking mural features a hyper-real recreation of a photo of the players embraced in a hug and is supported by a digital out of home takeover throughout the city. Multiple high impact screens across roadside, rail, POS and shopping malls leading with creative that combines Jürgen Klopp’s famous “Boom” with the Nivea Men logo, and the #sharethecare to encourage sharing on social media. The mural is situated on one of the largest available sites in the UK. In poco più di due mesi, da inizio giugno ad oggi, il nostro ufficio turistico, Infosasso Sasso Marconi, ha venduto 3.000 cartoguide e 5.000 credenziali, mentre la settimana scorsa il sito www.viadeglidei.it ha registrato un impensabile picco di visite (ben 19.000 accessi!). Numeri che confermano l’appeal della Via degli Dei, a maggior ragione in un’annata come questa, dove sempre più persone scelgono vacanze brevi, all’insegna del turismo slow e di prossimità. In my mind this is Sheffield’s least appreciated building, presumably due to its association with Morrison’s. It’s overlooked as you travel along Penistone Road North to the city centre despite its imposing curtain walls and turreted towers at each corner. Collectively known as Hillsborough Barracks, the complex features 12 grade II listed buildings and structures. The scale of the barracks, laid out over 22 acres, can hopefully be grasped from this photo compared to the surrounding buildings and the back to backs rising up the Hillsborough hillside to the right. Taking 6 years to construct at a cost of £124,000, it was the largest war depot in the U.K. in 1854 when it was completed. it remains as the only walled barracks in the country and was considered amongst the finest in Britain in the nineteenth century. The grounds are mainly used as a car park for Morrison’s nowadays with the buildings being utilised as offices, a job centre, a few shops on the upper level and the Garrison Bar and Hotel, housed in the former guardroom and magazine. - @heritagesheffield on Instagram

Am letzten Wochenende hatten wir die Möglichkeit legal in die Schutzräume eines ehemaligen Großbetriebes in Magdeburg abzutauchen und uns dort eine vollständig erhaltene Telefonzentrale anzusehen. Es war spannend als der Eigentümer das dicke Schlüsselbund raus holte, die Tür nach Jahren das erste mal öffnete, wir uns durch die dicken Spinnweben kämpften..... ;-) Im 2. Weltkrieg wurden die Keller des Betriebes zu Luftschutz- und Splitterschutzräumen umgebaut, zu Zeiten der DDR blieb der Charakter weitestgehend erhalten. Hier die ersten Bilder..... 📌Place-name of the week – tings and things Vikings and early Norse settlers introduced things (from Old Norse þings) assemblies or meeting places where political decisions were made, and disputes settled; they also were focal points for trade and religious activity. Found throughout the Viking world, many sites can be identified by ting, thing, ding and fing place-names – Gulating (Norway), Þingvellir (Iceland), Tinganes (Faroe Islands), Dingwall (Highland), Tiongal (Lewis), Fingay Hill (N Yorks) and Thingmote (Dublin). Every July the Manx parliament, Tynwald, continues a 1000-year-old tradition by returning to the ancient meeting place at Tynwald Hill for a ceremony, which includes the proclamation of all new laws created during the year. Shetland’s lawting met on Tingaholm, also known as Lawting Holm, the holm at the north end of Tingwall Loch until the 1570s when it was moved to Scalloway. The islet was originally linked to the mainland by a stone causeway. Many parish names point to a local assembly held in the area – Aithsting (Aith), Delting (Dale), Sandsting (Sand) and Lunnasting (Lunna). Other ting names appear in early documents but have gone out of use - Gnípnaþing at Neap in Nesting, Þvæitaþing, probably where there are several twatt/þveit names on the Westside, and Rauðarþing, Northmavine’s ting possibly located at North Roe. Other local meeting places may have been held in Unst, Yell, Fetlar, Papa Stour and Skerries. A ting held at Gardie in Yell on midsummer’s day 1538 was attended by the lawman of Shetland, along with lawrightmen from Yell and Unst, a dozen assessors, and even a King’s representative.
