F A M I L Y H I S T O R Y The first photo is my maternal grandmother’s wedding portrait. The following photos are her as she grew up. If you’d like to read my somewhat long post on family history and extraordinary times read on! . . I’ve been silent the last two weeks because I’ve needed time to process all that’s happening in not just the world and our country but in my own life and business. All of the sudden life is different, and a lot of it is totally out of my hands. I tend to retreat in times of stress and become very introspective. One afternoon I went a long a walk with my dog and called my 92 year old grandmother. . . My grandmother, who I call Mimi, was born in 1928, just before the Great Depression hit. She grew up during it and I remember hearing her stories from that childhood as I grew up. Most notably though, my grandmother contracted Polio when she was 18 years old. She was fortunate compared to many others, and doesn’t remember too much of what life was like during that time because she was in isolation in the hospital for nearly 3 months. She had been engaged to a man (not my grandfather) who broke up with her when she was hospitalized initially. . . She recovered while the US was in the midst of World War 2. She met my grandfather before he shipped off to the Navy and when he returned they married and started building their futures together. . . I called her because I wanted to know what life was like during such uncertain times. She just said “Well, we just all did what we had to do and we were just all happy to be alive and have each other.” Since that conversation, I’ve been thinking a lot about my family history and what lessons I can learn from my ancestors. I am so lucky that I still have my grandmother and that I have a well recorded family history, especially when it comes to photos. . . It’s made me realize how incredibly important my job is - more so even in uncertain times. I’ve spent much of my life rueing the day that the good Lord decided to make me pasty white with red hair. ⠀ ⠀ It wasn’t so much the red hair that bothered me... but it certainly was the pasty skin.⠀ ⠀ Lemon juice didn’t lighten my freckles.⠀ ⠀ Laying out didn’t make me tan.⠀ ⠀ Nothing little 11 year old Christena could do could change the fact that I looked positively see-through in a bathing suit. 🤣⠀ ⠀ And so, I spent the majority of my teen years with pale skin, braces and metal framed glasses. I’ll never forget those years. 🥴 ⠀ ⠀ Because, as the president of the ugly duckling club, I had resigned myself to a certain... anonymity. I was neverrrrrr the popular girl, the prettiest girl, the girl that guys wanted.⠀ ⠀ That just wasn’t me. ⠀ ⠀ It took me 27 years to grow into my own and to put down the self-tanner. ⠀ ⠀ I’m not saying there’s been a swan transformation as much as I’m saying... ⠀ ⠀ Choosing to love the {actual} skin that you’re in, even if you’ll never resemble a bronzed goddess prancing around the pool... is perhaps, the kindest thing you could ever do for yourself. ⠀ ⠀ To do anything else, is to tell God that you are smarter, more clever and have better artistic vision than He does 😬 ⠀ ⠀ So whether you’re alabaster, bronzed, ebony or deliciously caramel colored... My beautiful loving Mom has passed away. I am heartbroken. Her journey ended too soon. There are so many things I wanted to experience with her, but I am unbelievably lucky to have had 30+ years of amazing memories with her and my Dad. We were with her until the very end and had the opportunity to hold her hand and tell her how much we love her, and that it was ok to let go. Loving someone so much and not wanting them to go is the most gut wrenching feeling I have ever experienced. My Mom will always be with me, with us. She was so special and I am so proud of her. I miss the fatigue, the aches & pains, the laughs backstage and my nightly therapy sesh during the Epilogue. I miss not knowing if I had one more in me, and somehow finding a way home. I miss work....I have perspective, gratitude and health. Surrounded by family and given overwhelming support and a decent amount of bourbon. My name is Kathleen, I am two months away from being sixty-seven years old. Ive been an artist for 43 years. I was 23 when I started my portraits and drawings, I like to do portraits. My art and people are what make me happy. Last September I quit my job. I had just got my social security and I thought I would be able to get a part-time job to supplement my income. I couldnt get a part-time job, they were all filled it was kind of shocking. Now here I am experiencing homelessness. Ive been out here since February. Homelessness could happen to anyone. Finding a safe place to sleep, a place to use the restroom, and a place to stay hydrated are some of the more difficult aspects of being homeless. People think the homeless are the weak side of society, but we are the backbone. The ruler you use on somebody else will be your own; if you build a gallow for someone else, it will be your own. Its reversed, wherever you think negative, it will boomerang on you. So its better that we come together than be separate. My biggest needs are to find a room for rent and getting the ball rolling to do commercial art. I dont know what my life span will be, six years, maybe ten. The point is I want to get focused and get the ball rolling. I want to hook up with some commercial art companies. My parents and I came to this country with nothing. We left our home country whose economy was destroyed by the USSR to find a better life. We came to the USA to live the “American Dream”, to own our own businesses and be successful. I did not speak any English when I went to school at age 7. My parents worked every single day without any days off for years (and for what is considered literal pennies of a wage now). We lived in a rat infested trailer without air conditioning, and now we have our own homes. I became a US naturalized citizen when I was 16. I know what its like to have nothing. Everything my parents and I have achieved has been through hard work and perseverance. We now both own small businesses and I am an active member of my local community and a voice for historic preservation. I have worked so hard for everything I own because I did not give up, and neither did my parents when we came to the US. This country gave us the freedom that my family did not have in the Soviet Union. Do not ever give up on your dreams and do not take your freedom for granted. Little Women is officially open at HCTO! This is such a special show with an exceptional cast and I think it’s a story that we need right now. This is an extremely difficult and scary time in the world, with the threat of a deadly virus as real and dire as ever and a long overdue war on racism and injustice in our country just getting started. And because I am highly aware of these things, this is a very tricky post for me. I know a lot of people don’t agree with the decision to be performing right now. I get it. But I have to say I am so grateful for the professionals at the health department and the wonderful producers and friends I care so much about at the theater who have spent countless hours coming up with an approved, green lit plan to move forward at this time. *We feel safe.
