Never been more sure of myself but surely feeling the most insecure Ive ever felt before. Like a LOT of people, I feel stuck in some sort of limbo lately... constantly riding existential highs and lows. Desiring closeness and demanding distance from others at the same time. All while figuring out how to feed physical inclinations, balancing all the mental motivations and losing oneself in expansive emotional excavations. Ive been able to explore myself more deeply this year, but its hard to embrace my own growth and blessings when theres so much discord going on in the world. B L A C K S T O R Y: Wealth 1/3 Housing and food insecurity by way of financial insecurity is a generational curse that I am committed to break free from entirely. Lack has unfortunately been a constant friend that has outlived my grands and great grands. However, while on my journey to discover the right spell to undo this tie to scarcity, I uncovered a more profound truth: I’ve been divinely equipped with the gifts to rise above my lack. I realized that while many of my struggles were present in my real life circumstances, a large portion of it was perpetuated because of my own perception—a mindset of lack, confounded by an imposed status quo. This status quo informed my idea of success and wealth for years. I wanted money to spend to keep up with the Jones’s. But somewhere between gaining access to sit amongst the rich, and being homeless for two years, I awakened to a new understanding of wealth. My wealth is rooted in my experiences. It’s an amalgamation of my lessons learnt and skills innately possessed. Wealth is not about me, but about my future. Therefore whatever I possess internally as knowledge or transferable skills is a manifestation of wealth. If this is truly the case, then my mission is to build my wealth, sustain my wealth and have it sustain me, and most importantly share my wealth so that it may serve others both now and tomorrow. B L A C K S T O R Y: Power 3/3 It took me a while to understand the difference between being/or having been victimized and being a victim. The latter at times connotes a sort of unintentional identity that in a way begins and ends with the person/entity who victimized me. In so doing, I end up existing in the perpetuity of my trauma—a record on loop, reliving, retelling, and recommitting to memory. But should I parse through the pain of past experiences, in order to “move on”, or is that ask insensitive and diminutive? The truth is, my journey beyond victimhood is my own to accede at my own pace, as it is yours to do the same. The only caveats for me are the following: i. To recognize that I have the power to rewrite my story as one who is a victor over being victimized. ii. To understand that I, as a spirit having a human experience, existed before and beyond the experience. iii. To allow myself the room to hurt and laugh, as a form of strength and resistance respectively. iv. To know that justice serves many, and revenge only serves one. While these are great personal guiding principles, I am now faced with a more daunting question: How do you exercise power when your victimization is not a finite moment in your past, but rather an unyielding attack on your humanity? For this answer, I take notes from my Black sisters (you know yourselves), who lead the charge daily without losing an ounce of their beauty, often crying behind the scenes, and taking full responsibility for their own healing, while raising and protecting their kin. Their power is in their insistence to shine in spite of.
