#instapainting #art #museum - @landesmuseumzurich on Instagram

Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. If you are an American girl, this morning, you can imagine that you might grow up to be anything from a professional athlete, to a scientist, to a business owner, an astronaut, an artist, or the President of the country. You could imagine that your life and your body are entirely your own. You, a little girl, should not have to defend your right to be who or how you want to be, but there are people who have opinions about you. Depending on where and how you live, you might not know that there are people who believe that you are not entitled to be as free and powerful as a man. There are people who believe that your body is fundamentally inferior to a mans, in fact, who believe that your female body is the source of evil and corruption in the world. There are people who believe, and believe very strongly, that your proper destiny is to marry a man, live in a house that belongs to him, and do as he says. They believe that what a girl like you can be was determined long long ago, long before you were born, and that nothing can change it. You have not had to worry much about these people because you have been protected from their opinions by laws. Those laws did not always exist and they can be changed. The people who think you should do as they say might gain power. What you need to know now, today, is that their opinions about you, a girl, have been in retreat for centuries. Even in places where girls are physically attacked for trying to be themselves: even still, even there, across time these ideas are in retreat. So don’t let people scare you. And don’t let people tell you who to be. And don’t mistake a momentary setback for the end of history. History and the evolution of the human spirit are on your side. But you should also know that even though freedom is a universal human right, it is not always freely given… Freedom goes to those who take it. So take it. - @joerohde on Instagram

Today we are celebrating the opening of two major exhibitions! Ghosts from the Recent Past explores how urgencies of the recent past continue to inhabit the present. Framed by key political events of the past 40 years, both in Ireland and further afield, the exhibition presents artworks from the IMMA Collection from the 1980s onwards. Featuring works from IMMA’s Collection together with international collections, the exhibition debuts artworks from the major donation of the Kerlin Gallery Collection to the museum in 2018. At 4pm, we are opening Paul Rego Obedience and Defiance. This is a major retrospective by one of the most influential figurative artists of our time, Paula Rego. The selection of works focuses on the moral challenges to humanity, particularly in the face of violence, gender discrimination and political tyranny. Many of the images begin with the artist’s Portuguese roots and childhood experiences or respond to current affairs. There are still some tickets available for this evening. Book your tickets now on our website via the link in our bio! Image 1 :Love, 1995, Pastel on paper mounted on aluminium 120 x 160 cm. Last week, four museums in the US and the UK announced they would postpone a traveling Philip Guston exhibition to 2024 due to concerns about the reception of Ku Klux Klan imagery he employed in some works. As the art world debates the decision, were thinking about an essay our January-February 1978 essay, in which @robertasmithnyt addresses what was then the biggest controversy around Gustons work: his shift from abstraction to figuration in the late 1960s. Some may see this as a self-indulgent or regressive move, but in his own reclusive, schizophrenic, fragmented way, Guston is contemporary, Smith writes. His recent output is his most authentic work; it makes fullest use of his knowledge and his personality and, despite its many tie-ins with and quotations from older art, it could only have been made now. 🖌️ link in bio #philipguston #robertasmith #painting #modernart - @artinamerica on Instagram
