Did you know that we do local delivery? During lock-down, we came to realise that getting our products (as well as other local producers) to your door was really important! The simple everyday task of food shopping became awkward and took a lot longer, so the decision of delivery was the wise choice. Now that normality is beginning to resume, people are returning to our farm shops. However we have discovered that our local delivery has become a key route from Maker-to-Market and a convenience for the elderly, the busy and the ‘not-so-local’, local person. y’all today was such a monumental moment in my life. I finally got to grow food autonomously as a young, black, Brooklyn farmer for the brown people of Brooklyn. I was also able to respond to Momma Earth in a way that felt true to me, that felt true to the hungry critters (not pest) & felt true to community. Our quesadilla on the cover of today’s SF Chronicle Food + Wine section. Thanks again to @soleil_ho for including us in this year’s Top 88* restaurants in the Bay. We are deeply honored to be included among such a diverse group of restaurants and pop ups. This photo shoot took place a week before Shelter In Place began. About a month later I honestly wondered if we’d ever open back up again. Yet here we are, luckily hustling along. *Unfortunately many restaurants, bars and other small businesses didn’t survive the shut down. Hence the Top 88. 12 of the establishments originally on this list have since remained closed - some permanently. This year has posed so many challenges, but our biggest one has been packaging. The supply chain issue with our packaging has just about done our heads in, since May. Then there have been awful issues securing local fruits, as farmers have faced so many weather issues that have hurt crops. We got bottles 3 weeks ago and we’ve been NON STOP producing....just the 2 of us (and boy, are we pooched), but we’re in our new space that brings us so much joy every day we walk into it. A day in the life... Having survived the four hours from Kelowna, I begin my rounds with a residential street meet up near the PNE. Then twenty-one restaurants take me through Commercial, the Downtown Eastside, Gastown, Yaletown, Downtown, the West End, Kitsilano, Olympic Village, Mount Pleasant. Happy May Day/International Workers Day. I hope that, insofar as you are able to, you find or have agency over your labor. . . . An important catalyst for me to leave my previous career was a lack of agency. I was even privileged enough to work for an amazing company, with amazing owners, but the nature of the « job » stifled autonomy. That’s the way hierarchical systems operate. No matter the ethics of the people or the business, you are beholden to someone « above » you. I saw agriculture as a way to take my labor back. My success or failure is dependant soley on my desire to succeed.(barring, or course, ALL natural forces) However, this year, i have decided to bring someone into the fold to help. I never wanted to farm alone, but I also never wanted to be « the boss ». I’m searching inside myself for how to effectively empower someone else’s labor. This is in no way a simple question to answer and I feel I will be working towards this goal well into my old age. If I had my druthers this farm would run on collective farm-worker ownership, and maybe one day it will. Until then all I can do is try my best to empower those who help keep this farm afloat, and that sounds like a damn fine challenge. . Oh, also, I did a thing! We just opened our #honorsystemfarmstand in #tomales My neighbor, and extremely skilled craftsman, Jason built this structure on a trailer and I’m so grateful we get to benefit from his labor and generosity. Also, @williamtellhouse offered us a cool shady spot in their parking lot to set up shop, equally grateful for their generosity. 🍎🍏🍏KIDDS ORANGE RED🍎🍏🍏. Named after James Hutton Kidd, an orchard owner living in New Zealand in the early 20th century who had a passion for raising new varieties. Kidd might have been living in the New World, but he was clearly a fan of the complex aromatic flavours of the English style of apple. 🍏 The visual appeal is matched by the taste. The skin is thin and the flesh is a light yellow-cream colour, and quite dense. It bites cleanly, but is firm rather than crunchy. The flavour is sweet and honeyed, noticeably sweeter than Coxs Orange Pippin. The aromatic complexity of its parent is still there, but rich sweetness is the predominant impression. Like many English style apples it is also pleasantly chewy, and each bite seems to release yet more juice and flavour.
