This week on the podcast I have retired Marine Fire Support Man Leo Lozano (@lzdz) on to talk about his fire support career and his role in the Battle of Khafji during the opening days of the Gulf Wars ground war. Leo and his team, along with small teams from Recon and the SEALs, were manning OPs and conducting fire support missions along the border between American troops and Iraqs 5th Armored Brigade when their positions were overrun. Leo discusses retreating as quickly as possible while Iraqi tanks are firing at targets around him and then discusses taking back the city with his Arab nation partners his ANGLICO team was attached to. Captain Daniel Gordon was a Recon Marine, an artillery officer, an infantry officer and an intelligence officer. Yes, you read that correctly. On top of being a Marine officer with multiple specialties, Daniel Gordon was also a bulk fuel specialist in the Marine Corps Reserves prior to commissioning. Gordon has done multiple deployments (we focus on the invasion of Iraq and his units work in Mosul) and has completed a litany of professional schools. sooo majority of you know that i was in the military, and some of you are still shocked that i was cause i dont seem like a person that was in the military... believe me i know... i dont talk about it publicly that much cause i feel like its a personal subject, but i will talk about it when i get asked about it... its weird when people tell me thank you for serving because honestly, if you were in the same situation i was, im sure you would of done the same thing... i feel blessed that i came out of it without any physical or mental harm, cause PTSD aint no joke... i cant emphasize that enough... some people can handle it, and some people cant, ive lost more friends from PTSD than actual combat... people ask me how i handle it, and i still dont have an answer to it... i guess im just one of the few that can see stuff like that and process it... shout out to counterstrike 1.3 for mentally preparing me... i am proud that i have served with some of the most badass people on this planet and still today, are friends with some of the craziest mofos on this planet... Like many catastrophic and shocking events in history, I remember exactly where I was when I heard a 47 had been shot down in Afghanistan, August 6, 2011. That type of news caused an immediate reaction, my heart sank and I couldnt believe it was true. The bird that was brought down was Extortion 17, operating at a strike force location where I had been just ten months prior to the incident. Today, we will think of all those who walked on the ramp of the helo that night, never to walk off. From the aircrew, the SEAL assault element, our brave Air Force brothers, EOD teammates, and the combat support crew who make us successful, we will not forget your sacrifice. We lost many that night, and the families were hit hard.
