Remember folks: it doesn’t matter what tools you have. What matters is how/why you use them. My approach in mastering is to always have a reason for using a plugin or piece of equipment. Never “throw something on” just because you have it and want to use it. Experimentation is fine, but there is no “one size fits all” mastering chain. Bonus tip: OUTSOURCE mastering whenever possible. Get fresh ears on your projects. A mastering engineer has a trained ear. We can: correct small issues with a mix, balance tonal response across multiple mixes, and make enhancements that will bring your music to a whole new level. When trigger gain is set “too” low, The Pill is fast enough to detect the low frequency waves of a low bass note. Here’s a few snippets all from the same patch. All analog sequencing with a “generative” twist where the sequence never repeats exactly the same way. The two rows of the sequencer each control an oscillator. The top row goes through a sequence selector with three steps. A new step gets triggered every time the sequence reaches step 8. The first step on the sequence selector passes cv directly through. On The second step the cv sequence is offset ,by four sequence steps, through an analog shift register. On the third step there’s no cv but a gate fires hitting the strobe input on the sequencer. This strobe function is set up to restart the sequence from a random step. The fourth video is a close up of how the sequencer is moving. I’ve been slowly working on a batch of ambient music using this and similar techniques to create very long recordings that don’t repeat. Not like “cool guy ambient” but more just like music to put my kids to sleep to. These ones didn’t make the cut but sounded interesting anyways. It’s fun and challenging to come up with interlocking sequences that will play nice with each other while either offset / transposed or both. Trying (and mostly failing) at compositional experiments like this has opened up whole new level of appreciation for something like the Goldberg variations. Been working on recreating some serum patches on the modular. The first one is one of my favorites “ such relaxation” hard to beat but I got close with the expressive detuning patch and just manually wiggling in the pitch LFOs. The second one was an attempt to get close to one of the “monster- growling-bass” type patches. To get close to the wavetable scanning effect I used some sequenced modulation of the wave shape on the @verboselectronics complex oscillator. Also used some fm from the modulation osc. the fm amount was also sequenced on the multistage. Still not quite there. A visitor from Kreuzberg popped in to see us for a quick health check. I cannot believe it is 3.5 years since it was installed @mutingthenoise If youre observant, you might notice that (unlike Sams FP mixer), the layout hierarchy is vertical rather than horizontal. This was at Dixons personal request. The circuitry is 100% the same, with all filtering / equalisation based around custom-wound inductors, and all electronics 100% single-ended (non-complementary) Class A / discrete. There will be some more internal shots to follow. Note the 300W power supply, with its custom-wound, uber-silent transformer. _____________________________________________ Wir hatten Besuch aus Kreuzberg für einen kurzen Check-up. Kaum zu glauben, dass der Mixer schon dreieinhalb Jahre bei @mutingthenoise steht. Anders als bei Sam’s FP Mixer ist die Anordnung hier nicht horizontal, sondern auf Dixon’s persönlichen Wunsch vertikal. Die Schaltungen sind zu 100% gleich.
