It’s been one week since @malcrebtraphill funeral & two weeks since he passed. I miss my cousin man. It still feels like yesterday. the realization I’m making a post honoring my cousin’s passing feels too final. He’s been here always, since day one. The other day I was cleaning up in an attempt to clear my head of everything and I suddenly had a wash of calm, peaceful energy pass over my body. It felt like water. I immediately felt refreshed & happy. As this happened I heard “I’m okay, keep creating” over & over in my head. I knew firmly in my spirit that his soul is at peace & there is nothing to worry about. It’s not random the feeling felt like water. All that’s left for me to do is keep creating & keep the legacy of pure artistry going in my family. Every single one of my family members are leaders & artists in their communities. I’m next. The day of his repass showed me how important giving to ppl is, even in the smallest ways. It was the perfect way to celebrate my guy. The love Malc had for his music and for his friends & family will be the things we carry on forever. The money, the attention, the quick high is fleeting. The love remains. “When I get this money....I ain’t changing up.” Everything I do, I do to spread love & inspiration to the souls of this world. I love you big cuddy. Always and forever. Daddy, Alzheimers and Me • I was alone with my dad one day when he asked, “What is happening to me?” He could still communicate with words at this point but his mind often broke them down like a blender, so he could never be too sure how they would come out. But this time his question was clear and I didn’t know how to answer. My silence felt like betrayal at the time, but now Im glad I said nothing. My response would have been wrong. It would have been based on what I could see and all I saw was this one thing, this sickness, this disease creeping through the back door of our home like a thief. I never noticed God standing at the front door, knocking, waiting to come in and be present in the suffering. Even before I really noticed He was there, He had already started doing more than my eyes could see. Perhaps that’s how Jesus could be so bold in the face of death. When He looked it in the eyes, he must have seen more. He must have seen glory too. He must have seen salvation. He must have seen me and you. In that moment, He saw both loss and life, suffering and hope, judgement and mercy. He saw it all and continued to walk towards the cross, knowing that the light and momentary affliction does not compare to the eternal glory. So now, when I look at the cross I am reminded that God is always doing much more than I can see. As some of you know, we are currently working on the Retrospective of Martha Cooper which opens next Friday at the @urbannation_berlin . Of course we don’t wanna reveal too much therefore we wanna repost this story from Martha which allows one to understand what it meant to be shooting #wholecars in the 70s/80s. I became obsessed with trying to photograph fresh top-to-bottom cars before they were buffed or gone over by other writers. In order to shoot the entire car, I had to stand off-track. I spent days driving alongside the subway lines in the South Bronx scouting locations, looking for interesting backgrounds. I needed a wide view so that I could preview the whole train to see if any cars had new pieces painted on them. The vast areas of abandoned buildings and vacant lots often offered good angles but standing alone for hours with expensive cameras was risky. However, after catching a few spectacular paintings, I decided it was a risk I was willing to take. The Number 2 line was one of the most popular lines to paint because the trains ran on a circuitous route from Brooklyn through Manhattan into the Bronx and back. Writers who had never met could see, identify and critique the work of fellow-writers from other boroughs. If I waited for five hours I could see both sides of a car. The trains ran in a North/South direction so I had to be mindful of the light as the colors did not show up well if backlit. I often drove to the Bronx early in the morning for rush hour since the trains ran more frequently then and spent five hours on alert hoping for a great piece. Once I had successfully captured a great piece in context, I would find another location so each background was unique. Getting the perfect picture was challenging, frustrating and dependent on luck as well as technical skill. In addition to standing for hours in the middle of a vacant lot in the South Bronx, I had to continually adjust speed and f-stops manually for varying light conditions and manually pre-focus the camera on the train tracks. I was shooting Kodachrome film with an iso of 64 and very little leeway for mistakes. [continue reading in the comment] - @yesandpro on Instagram

Life doesn’t make any sense sometimes. Especially when such an amazing person is taken from this world due to one of the biggest problems we have in this country. Greg was one of the first people I had the privilege of photographing when I was first learning how to use a camera at 17 years old. He shared his story with me and it greatly impacted the work I was interested in making. Today we may say goodbye, but his legacy will live on forever. It’s been a huge honor to assist Curatorial Queen @the_lynx_eyed with organizing Sotheby’s first ever auction dedicated to Hip Hop - happening live online next Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6pmET @sothebys. The auction includes 120 lots with an emphasis on the late 70s through the “Golden Age” and includes contemporary art, photography, historic artifacts, one-of-a-kind experiences, fashion and jewelry, rare flyers, posters, and publications, and more. Quarantine got me missing my job! Thought I’d get a bit creative with the photography and took this from a different angle & ring light . So here’s the shot of @tom.lov3 last trim, I know for a fact he’s missing his barber more than his missus 💯 @tom.lov3 has a mid/high skin fade with a straight shape up. The top was long and thick so we gave that a good trim, point cutting around the crown, apex and fringe alongside with a lot of freehand texturising as he wanted to move away from the blunt fringe. The hair was then styled using the @bornurbanbarbers grooming range salt spray, blow dried and styled with @bornurbanbarbers Powder and NN2 to give that texture whilst keeping the hair matte.
