It was the only race of the 1984 championship that was run in wet weather. The race, held amidst heavy rain, was one of the most contentious in Formula One history, and announced the emergence of at least two new stars. Alpine arrivant avec 4 voitures officielles, Porsche décide de ramener une 935/78 avec une armada de prototypes 936... Mais avant Le Mans, la 935 a subi différentes modifications, que ce soit au niveau aérodynamique ou au niveau de la motorisation En effet, cette 935/78 dite Moby Dick avec ses formes, est en réalité le tout premier moteur Porsche refroidie par eau/air et sera monté sur un châssis tubulaire en aluminium. De plus, 2 énormes turbos seront greffés sur le 6 cylindres pour atteindre une puissance totale de 750 chevaux contre 600 pour une 935/77 (à voir sur le compte de @lemans24passion). Pour contrer une telle puissance, Porsche réalisera un tout nouveau capot arrière pour réduire la résistance au vent et permettra à cette voiture datteindre jusquà 350 km/h dans les Hunaudières... Les problèmes commencent dès le pesage pour la n°43, puisque les portières ne correspondaient pas au règlement Groupe 6 silhouette car des appendices aérodynamiques recouvraient les portières, donc dans un premiere temps, la voiture est refusée pour la course. Mais suite à des arrangements, Porsche réussi à faire participer la voiture en disant que les appendices sont enfaite, la continuité des ailes arrières... Aux qualifications, elle se qualifiera 3e, devant certaines Groupe 6 et loin devant ses autres concurrentes du Groupe 5 ou de lIMSA. Mais la course sera bien plus compliqué pour Porsche en général, après seulement 39 minutes de course, Moby Dick rentre au stand pour ravitailler puisquen 10 tours, elle aura bu 120L, soit du 80L/100km!! Pendant le reste de la course, elle sera victime de plusieurs problèmes que ça soit le pot déchappement, la circuit de refroidissement, en passant par les pompes à injection et à essence... It’s a pity that I couldn’t take the rhythm of the group ahead in the grid: I started soon to lose something because the others had more grip than us, so a little gap was created. During the race, the times have been stabilized and we succeeded to go much faster. I did myself a mistake at Turn 10, which costed us something in the result.
