Ep 1 of PINDROP, the podcast Im hosting for @TED , is up! And Apple put it on the top row of the front page of Apple Podcasts! Super grateful! Some behind the scenes: I couldnt go to Bangkok for this episode, but we worked with Pailin Wedel, a really dope Thai-American filmmaker/journalist who was on the ground, recording, riding through traffic with motorcyle police midwives (!) all kinds of stuff. When it came time to record narration, some of it came from me interviewing Pailin about the stories, but some had to be just me narrating. I was nervous. The @magnificentnoise and TED production team had done a bunch of great recording in Bangkok and groundwork for the episode, but it was my first time hosting a podcast. I wanted to sound natural, and I wanted to make sure I didnt, um, say anything dumb about Bangkok. So, I called up my friend Raj Bunnag ( Thai-American artist, has lived out in Bangkok, IG @jungle_asian_redneck , pictured above and a shot of his art in the last slide), and asked him to just sit socially distanced away and listen to me work through narration and riffing new bits. He came through with @thereallaww , and while at first I thought theyd just check me when I sounded stiff or said something that felt off, Raj kept riffing himself and saying fascinating, funny things. So we micd him up, interviewed him, and sent that tape off to the producers as well, not sure what to expect. Producer @betweenthebranches was into the new tape, and that is the story of how Bojangles lovin Durhamite Raj Bunnag ended up in the episode. Eating disorders thrive in isolation and the shame and guilt that’s often associated with the illness keeps the individual trapped in the cycle of eating disorder behaviours . In not conforming to the stereotype of someone with an eating disorder, men face a double burden. . Research by Beat shows that men have to wait, on average, three times longer than women – 28 weeks – between first seeing their GP and getting a referral. . We need to eradicate the social stigma associated with mental illness and eating disorders for everyone, and we urgently need to eradicate the social stigma for men, because their access to care is seriously compromised as a result. . Introducing AAJA Residents #003 With @ellerevemusic I’ve recently gotten into ebm/industrial sounds; there are some great labels I regularly dig at for tunes. Currently, my go-to’s would be @monnom.black , @repitchrecordings and @loosefitrecords 140BPM seems to be the sweet spot for me at the moment, and I’ve been having a lot of fun messing around with the tempo fader on some slower tech tracks. A couple tunes I’m loving lately and would recommend giving a spin are ‘Atlantyda’ by @vtss.pl Sand ‘Vibe Decorium’ by @Blawan_ternesc Alongside my residency at @aajadeptford I’ve just started spinning some tunes monthly for @radio_kapital a community station in Warsaw. Having these two monthly gigs has been a real blessing during lockdown (but a curse for my neighbours). It’s been difficult adjusting to performing remotely; I never thought I’d miss sweating with a bunch of smelly strangers in dank, dark rooms. However, lockdown has taught me many things about myself, and a love for sweaty strangers seems to be in the top five. I’m cooking up some zesty new tunes which I can’t wait to share. Con poco più del 5% di ristoranti capitalizzati e l’1% di ristorazione stellata, la grande maggioranza dei ristoranti italiani è a conduzione familiare: il classico “ristorante di quartiere “. Migliaia di famiglie italiane si ritrovano tra i tavoli a raccontare storie attraverso ricette tramandate per generazioni. Sono ristoranti nati per amore, per passione, e lì c’è il cuore del ristoratore più verace e lì c’è più sofferenza: con queste attività sopravvivono intere famiglie, tra quelle mura domestiche trasformate in punti di ristoro, sono passati migliaia di avventori in cerca di sapori di casa e atmosfere calde e affettuose, dove non importa se la pasta è un po’ scotta l’importante è trovare il calore di una casa acquisita nel tempo. Sono valori aggiunti che solo in Italia abbiamo e i cui suoni e energie, purtroppo, si vanno affievolendo. Vorrei fare un appello: cerchiamo di rimettere al centro di ogni quartiere le attività familiari, qualsiasi esse siano, quelle che più ci stanno a cuore e che hanno raccontato con il lavoro la storia del Bel Paese. Mijn hoofd na 2 repetitiedagen. Het was mega leuk (zie stories) en ben nu ook bekaf. ‘Hoe de fuck vind ik geluk?’ is vanaf vrijdag te zien bij een theater bij jou in de buurt. Hoewel de titel hetzelfde is als van m’n boek, is de inhoud totaal anders 🤣🤣 De leidraad van mijn shows is altijd mijn persoonlijke zoektocht naar geluk in het leven. In m’n vorige show deelde ik verhalen over het ontdekken van m’n passie en het bereiken van succes in m’n droom. Terwijl ik die show speelde was ik ondertussen al bezig met een diepgaandere zoektocht. Noem het de verbinding met mezelf. Of het spirituele. Vooral op zoek naar antwoord op de vraag: hoe haal ik geluk uit mezelf in plaats van uit m’n omgeving? En het moet bij mij natuurlijk weer extreem. Dus om hier antwoord op te vinden heb ik de meest bizarre dingen gedaan. De hilarische fuck-ups en wijze lessen die dit heeft opgeleverd deel ik tijdens deze nieuwe show. Dat maakt dat deze show persoonlijker is dan ooit. Daarmee hoop ik jou te raken. Als je tijdens de show ook maar heel even het fijne gevoel van de verbinding met jezelf hebt ervaren dan is mijn missie geslaagd. Of dat gaat lukken moet je natuurlijk zelf ontdekken. Our upcoming #DeepLook episode follows a peregrine falcon pair, @cal_falcons Annie and Grinnell, as they lay their eggs and raise three chicks at the top of the @ucberkeley’s 300-foot bell tower. Peregrine falcons are found in cities across the United States, from New York to Chicago to San Francisco. But it wasn’t always like this. 🐦 These raptors – the fastest animals in the world – were on the brink of extinction in the 1960s, after the pesticide DDT thinned their eggshells to the point where they would break when parents sat on them. Peregrine falcon eggs that had been collected for decades by museums helped scientists figure out that eggshells had been thinning out. 🥚 For our episode, our series cinematographer Josh Cassidy filmed peregrine falcon eggs in the collection of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, at @ucberkeley. The MVZ’s collection was one of those studied to figure out the cause of the eggshell thinning, according to Carla Cicero, the museums curator of birds. 🐦 A lot of our specimens go back to the late 1800s, early 1900s, Cicero said. Loopy at the end of another night shoot, I was set on two things - 1) finding out if Joanna Newsom was gonna reschedule her cancelled LA show dates I had tickets to and 2) getting a two-shot with @joelotruglio & myself. The answer to 1 was “Probably.” And the answer to 2 is this photo. Joe Lo Truglio has inhabited every character I’ve ever seen him play with ebullience, empathy and naked, often embarrassing sincerity. He expresses those traits in a much more breathable, down-to-earth package in person. And Charles on @nbcbrooklyn99 is such a canny use of Joe’s buzzy vibration it’s incredible. (Also, only someone with his natural warmth and likability could have coasted through his characters’ earlier seasons’ way-creepier-with-women stuff). How can you not like this guy?? Every time I get to work with any former member of The State in any capacity, my 17 year-old self is holding onto my shoulders and pogo-ing up and down like the DJ just dropped House of Pain on the decks. Ken Marino was a TA for my first @leslykahn Class. I got to write and produce an All Star Celebrity Bowling Pilot for @nerdist that @thomaspatricklennon was in.
