El Monte Legion Stadium - Originally built in 1927 as the gymnasium for the old El Monte High School campus , the stadium is most famous for hosting the dances that would serve as inspiration for the song “Memories of El Monte” written by Frank Zappa and performed by The Penguins. The stadium remained mostly unused once the new El Monte High campus opened on Tyler Ave. and welcomed the class of 1940. The American Legion purchased the stadium in 1945 and renamed it “El Monte Legion Stadium” From 1945 through the mid 1950’s the stadium hosted a wide range of events: basket ball games, wrestling, boxing, roller derby’s, and even mini car races. The stadium reached the apex of it’s popularity when legendary disc Jockey Art Laboe brought his Oldies But Goodies dances to El Monte. At the time city ordinances and regulations in Los Angeles did not allow large gatherings of young people under the age of 18. The stadium was a perfect venue, close enough to Los Angeles but outside of the city limits and not subject to Los Angeles ordinances. Art Laboe’s dances at the Legion we’re extremely popular. Crowds of young people from different backgrounds and ethnicities from all over the southland were brought together by their love of dancing and music. Some notable acts that performed at the stadium: Jerry Lee Lewis, The Penguins, Rosie and The Originals, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Richie Valens. By the 1960’s The young crowds moved on the the booming sunset strip and Los Angeles proper. The stadium remained in operation hosting smaller events. In 1973 the US Postal Service purchased the stadium property to build a new post office. The stadium was torn down on Friday the 13th 1974. The Union Walk townhome development currently sits at the former site of the stadium at Valley and Ramona Blvd. A small fountain and plaque in front of the development memorializes the history that the Stadium made in EL Monte. - @elmonte.captured on Instagram

До 30 сентября на площадке социокультурного пространства Завод Шпагина открыта выставка-инсталляция Юнгородок. Музейно-выставочный мемориальный проект «Юнгородок» представляет музей истории пермского моторостроения АО «ОДК-Пермские моторы». ⠀ Как отмечают авторы проекта, мы хотим рассказать об одном уникальном событии из истории нашего города периода войны — эта труд на оборонных заводах молодых рабочих - выпускников ремесленных училищ, которые эшелонами направлялись из разных городов страны в Пермь. В 1943-1945 годы это был практически главный трудовой ресурс. В ремесленные училища поступали после окончания школы семилетки. ⠀ Подробнее на сайте Завода Шпагина - zshpagina.ru. EL CERRO SANTA LUCÍA: UN JARDÍN AÉREO ▪︎ Parte 1 de 2 . Originalmente conocido como el Huelén (o Huentën según algunos autores), no siempre estuvo cubierto de árboles o fue un obligado paseo de nuestra ciudad. Antes de su habilitación como el singular parque urbano que es en 1874, era un peñón rocoso. Un cerro de rocas y de una formación geológica de carácter volcánico. Pero uno muy particular. ▪︎ Lo más seguro es que jugará un papel predominante y fundamental en la cultura, ritos y prácticas diarias en el valle del Mapocho antes de la llegada de los españoles, lo que nos lleva a preguntarnos ¿cómo se habrá desenvuelto lo sagrado entre las rocas del cerro? Y, ¿cómo habrá sido aquella invitación que se le hizo a Pedro de Valdivia un 13 de diciembre de 1540 por parte de la comunidad local, para visualizar desde allí buena parte de este valle que se extendía por sendos paisajes de espinos y otra flora común y una multiplicidad de otros cerros “islas”? Una fecha clave, ya que aquel día corresponde al santoral de Santa Lucía, nombre con el que se “re bautizó” el cerro. ▪︎ Es así que nuestro cerro es un verdadero símbolo de la capital, y es el testigo de toda la vida e historia del valle convertido en metrópoli. Y hace de Santiago, ¡una ciudad única en el mundo! Pese a ello, el cerro rocoso por naturaleza y ya llamado Santa Lucía fue usado principalmente como un peñón que servía de vigía, y luego, en la reconquista española (1814 – 1817) adquirió un marcado interés militar, ya que allí se construyeron dos plazas de artillería y fuertes (la Marcó, y la Hidalgo). Las que cabe decir que no fueron utilizadas para el proceso de independencia. .
