This was taken several years ago on my first trip to Austin in the middle of February. I was super excited to see the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue as he’s is my favorite guitarist of all time. One of the things I was looking forward to is taking my family to the statue, because it’s in a great area to walk and have a picnic- plus I wanted to have a photo of my youngest son Axl who’s middle name is Vaughn after SRV. (Yes I know the spelling isn’t the name). One day hopefully soon while it’s warm and lush with greenery, my family and I will be able to go to the park see the statue, have a picnic with friends and not have to wear masks etc. I’m hopeful for those brighter days ahead. Khắp nẻo Chợ Lớn lại rộ lên nhộn nhịp như một lò bánh khổng lồ cung cấp bánh cho khắp Sài Gòn, Nam Kỳ Lục Tỉnh. --------- 🥮Cậu chuyện về bánh Trung Thu Chợ Lớn xưa Ngồi trước tiệm An Duyên, A Mà chỉ tay ra mạch đường Trần Hưng Đạo B - xưa là trục đường Galliéni, nói: trước năm 45, dọc con lộ này, xưa kia là trung tâm buôn bán rất sầm uất, hai bên mọc lên dãy phố cao lầu, tửu điến, hiệu buôn nhộn nhịp, đàn ca hát xướng vang vọng khắp lối. Vào mùa Trung thu bắt đầu từ đầu tháng 7 âm lịch, kéo dài mãi cho đến rằm tháng 8, các quầy bánh Trung thu chỉ tập trung quanh quẩn khu này chứ chưa có nhiều ở Sài Gòn đâu, mấy hiệu bánh Đồng Khánh, Long Xương, Vĩnh Hưng Tường, Tân Tân, Đại Chúng, Đông Hưng Viên... nổi tiếng vang danh Nam bộ, Trung bộ ai cũng ưa chuộng, người người lũ lượt kéo về mua bánh, hàng xóm thì ai cũng có công làm thêm trong mấy xưởng bánh này, nhộn nhịp, không khí lễ hội lắm. Nhưng giờ mấy hiệu bánh này biến mất, còn thì cũng chỉ ít người biết tới. Thay vào đó là các loại bánh trung thu Như Lan, Kinh Đô được bầy bán khắp nơi. Cũng là bánh trung thu nhưng hương vị ngày ấy nay không còn! Cho đến khi Sài Gòn có hiệu Brodard xuất hiện năm 1948, sở hữu dây chuyền công nghệ và sản xuất quy mô lớn của người Pháp bắt đầu sản xuất bánh Trung Thu, những đợt bánh công nghiệp đầu tiên, vị chẳng thể bì được bánh truyền thống tự tay làm, nhưng lại thu hút dân tình bởi thương hiệu và trở thành món quà xa xỉ thời đó. It was our first wedding Anniversary which we decided to spend in Agra.. to spend our special day at the Taj Mahal.. Taj Mahal is not just a monument, but a symbol of love. We wondered how someone could love their beloved so much that their dedication to them became one of the wonders of the world. I found the Taj Mahal as the most appropriate example of artistically expressed love.. it was not my first visit to the Taj.. but to visit with the love of my life.. I fell in love with the Taj.. We enjoyed our Day appreciating the beautiful art.. the engravings.. the designs.. This week is the first week in over seven years I can’t call myself a freelancer. As of yesterday, I’m now the digital editor at Zomato Sydney, I’ll have some more news on that but now I want to say goodbye to a chapter of my life and thank a bunch of people. Sometime in early 2015, I presented an idea to @georgia_booth. I said, what do you think about writing a column on restaurants in Sydney where we ask different community organisations for recommendations. Maybe, some of the community group members might want to come to the restaurants and eat with us? With Georgia’s help, that idea became @broadsheet_syd’s Local Knowledge column (Georgia came up with the name, all my ideas were shit house). For the last five years of my life, writing that column has been one of the highlights of my week. Most massively joyous things in my life: dancing every Monday night, Arsenal winning games, my housemates and working on Local Knowledge every week. Of course, it’s been enormously fuckyum but what will have a more lasting impression on me is how much I’ve learnt. Read this email I sent Georgia after the first episode on Chatkazz: “The restaurant in Harris Park was absolutely mental. I cant remember the last time I went to a restaurant in Sydney and felt so perplexed and out of my depth. It was unlike anything Ive ever had before and was so interesting in so many ways.” I didn’t know shit (some of those first articles were pretty cringey) and man am I bloody lucky to have the kindest, most compassionate educators. Most of the chefs and restauranteurs I talked to didn’t know what Broadsheet was, yet they took hours of their time to tell me their story, educate me about their cuisine, share a meal with me and let @leighgriffithslens take a whole bunch of pictures of them and their kitchen. I learnt so much, not just about cooking, ingredients, history and all that, but about the cultural fabric of Sydney, and how much fucking better and more delicious it is for having all these people in it. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s that we, I mean society generally here, don’t even come close to appreciating that fact. - @nickjordan88 on Instagram
