Chowringhee was a dense forest with wild animals in the beginning of 18th century. It connected the villages of Kalighat with Chowringhee. There are intresting theories as to how Chowringhee got its name. Some scholars believe a nath sect Saint Chowringinath had dera (camp) here, others believe it was a pilgrim road to Kalighat temple and the name comes from village cherangi (cut up body) in reference to Kalighat being a shaktipeeth. The third theory suggest Chowringhee simply means many colored stemming from the houses that were built later. The area became a thriving posh colony under British Raj. It became a pride and commercial centre with rows of bungalows on the eastern side of the road. The western edge was the huge open area of Maidan. On 6th July 1857, Chowringhee was lit up by gas lamps provided by Oriental Gas Company. Soon pavements were built to erect gas lamps. Chowringhee soon from forest to villages had become a white town with palatial government buildings and private dwellings with gardens. Later, tram lines and trams were added to the western edge only to be removed later. There are only few buildings that survive as a glimpse of British Raj such as the Janbazar (which was owned by Rani Roshmani), many prime buildings of importance such as Indian Museum, St. Pauls Church, the Chowringhee Mansion remain rooted. #TriviaTuesday: A frequently asked question is, “How tall was King Kalakaua?” Kalakaua did not answer the height question on his 1881 passport and media reports of the King’s height vary. A non-local newspaper reported during his 1881 trip that he was just 5’ tall, which is way too short, while another paper reported he was 5’11”. This photo of Kalakaua standing on the lanai next to the Chinese urns provides us with a great clue. The Chinese urns contain a decorative element, indicated by the red arrows, that can serve as a useful reference point. By examining the King’s stature in relation to that point, we can finally determine the King’s height. The color photo is of two Palace volunteers standing next to the very same urn. Ipolani on the left is 5’8” and Jeffery is 5’10”. From this evidence we can extrapolate that the king was likely about the same height as Ipolani. So, how tall was Kalakaua? Entre las madrileñas calles de Segovia y de la Villa se encuentra la plaza de la Cruz Verde, llamada así en recuerdo de la cruz pintada de verde que anunciaba las ejecuciones inquisitoriales. Una discreta pero solemne fuente preside la plaza, ¿queréis saber más sobre ella? 👉La fuente de Diana, también conocida como la fuente de la Cruz Verde, por su ubicación, data del s.XIX. La fuente consta de tres cuerpos unidos por un zócalo de granito y está construida en ladrillo y piedra. Su autor fue el arquitecto Martín López Aguado. 📐Lopez Aguado salvó el desnivel de la plaza adosando la fuente a la fachada del huerto del desaparecido convento de las Bernardas del Santísimo Sacramento. Esta solución, sin embargo, se acercaba más al antiguo modelo de fuente de caños que a los estilos de fuentes con columnas o pilastras que imperaron durante el s.XVIII. ⛲️En el cuerpo central se puede observar un escudo de Madrid labrado en piedra y la leyenda “Siendo correjidor el Excmo. Sr. Marqués de Sª Cruz. Año de 1850”. Sobre su dintel descansa una figura en mármol que representa a la diosa romana Diana, a sus pies dos delfines protegen a la diosa de la caza y los animales. Registros das transformações urbanas do Rio de Janeiro As fotografias que apresentamos hoje mostram as obras de abertura da avenida Presidente Vargas, no centro do Rio de Janeiro, no início da década de 1940. A intervenção tinha o objetivo de melhorar as condições de circulação e saneamento da então capital federal. Com quatro quilômetros de extensão e 80 metros de largura, a monumental avenida foi inaugurada em 1944, ligando, numa linha reta, o centro da cidade à zona norte. As fotos deste post estão contidas no fundo Hélio de Brito, conjunto doado ao Arquivo Nacional em 1999 que reúne documentos do #acervo pessoal do #engenheiro civil Hélio Alves de Brito (1902-1978). Muitas dessas fotografias são registros de obras que provocaram grandes transformações urbanas na cidade entre o final da década de 1930 e início da década de 1940. Hélio de Brito participou ativamente desses empreendimentos. Ele ocupou os cargos de diretor de obras da prefeitura do Distrito Federal, em 1938, e de engenheiro-chefe do Serviço Técnico Especial da Comissão Construtora da Avenida Presidente Vargas e Esplanada do Castelo, entre 1938 e 1946. Heavenly beings: From Heaven to Earth! They go by many names in the Bible: Angel, holy angel, angel of God, heavenly host, heavenly beings... At St. John’s Church, Thane, they appear among the cottony clouds over the high altar. They float out in space. They hold up the symbol IHS. Fixed gaze, they stand in attendance and reverence. Angels, cherubs, seraphs, and the Baroque retable of the church have these heavenly beings in bas relief. Seraphim and cherubim feature in various poses on the retable (backdrop) of the main altar. Christ may appear crucified on earth. And yet - already in heaven! Among the clouds behind the Cross appear angels in attendance – one bears a ladder needed to lower the body. Another holds the chalice to contain the precious blood. Yet another clutches a veil on which is imprinted the face of Christ as a symbol of his passion. Others bear the shrouds in rolls –no doubt to wrap the tortured body. Other symbols of the passion – the nails, hammer and crown of thorns all appear in the arms of these heavenly beings. They hover around the cross. Widely featured in the Baroque style of decoration is the cherub - a winged angel attending on God often depicted as a chubby child with wings. They feature at corners and float around in any depiction of heaven. The cherubs appear in bas relief in the clouds and literally seem to fly out from the sides. In modern art a bright light often represents the presence of the angel as the word “seraph” means “the burning one”. Realizzato da un artista non ancora ventenne, presenta influssi giotteschi che si sommano al tentativo di resa prospettica nella tavola al centro, secondo le nuove teorie di Ghiberti e di Brunelleschi. Non vi è invece traccia di decorativismi tardogotici, ma prevalgono elementi realistici. 90 years ago, one of the greatest Japanese painters of the Shin Hanga style, Hiroshi Yoshida, travelled around Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and to other locations. The paintings above display the Indian subcontinent through the eyes and style of a 1930s Japanese painter. Hiroshi Yoshida was a leading figure of the Shin Hanga movement that revived traditional Japanese woodblock printing in the 19th century. What is Shin Hanga? 新版画 = new prints / new woodcut (block) prints was an art movement around the early 20th-century of Japan, during the Taisho and Showa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th–19th century). How powerless an emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was! The Mughal Empire was in a continuous state of decline ever since Aurangzebs death. By the time Bahadur Shah Zafar became the Emperor, his real authority existed only within the walls of the Red Fort. The British Resident (representative of Governor General to the Palace), Sir Thomas Metcalfe, kept a firm eye on Zafar’s daily life and frequently forbade him from exercising rights that the Emperor regarded as sacrosanct. No nobleman from outside Delhi could enter the Red Fort without Metcalfe’s permission. To enforce his right to rent from his own lands, Zafar had to make an application to the British courts. He could not present gems from the crown jewels even to his own family members without first informing the Resident, and was occasionally, humiliatingly, made to ask for the return of unauthorised gifts if the agent came to hear about them. Zafar could not gift khilats (robes of honour, symbols of overlordship) on noblemen from outside the Delhi without Metcalfe’s say-so: when Raja Gulab Singh of Kollesur paid a visit to the court, presenting a nazr (or offering of fealty) of ‘a horse and 7 gold mohurs’, in return for which Zafar gave him a khilat, Metcalfe promptly made the Raja return it. A petition was received from Mirza Shoojat Shah stating that a chief had arrived and was desirous of visiting the Palace. Zafar replied that without the Agent’s permission no chief of a foreign territory could be allowed entrance. The guru also built a residence for himself which came to be known as Guru da Chakk. Most part of the city was developed in 17th and 18th century. Guru Ramdas:- Jallianwala Bagh massacre also occurred here on 13th April 1919 in which many Indians were killed. The killing was done by the orders of Reginald Edward Harry Dyer. After independence, there was a partition in which India was partitioned as India and Pakistan where Punjab was divided between the two countries and Amritsar came under India. The Indo-Pak border called Wagah Border is 28km away from the city. Damage to the Temple:- The temple and the Akal Takht was damaged during Operation Blue Star in which there was a fierce fight between the soldiers and the Sikhs and many people died. In order to avenge, the Sikh bodyguards killed Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Though Rajiv Gandhi government repaired the Akal Takht Sahib in 1986 but it was removed in 1989. Later Kar Sevaks made the Akal Takht in 1999. [#NosCollections]🎼 Les lieux de diffusion de l’art lyrique en Corse « L’opéra de Bastia » En Corse, comme ailleurs, les institutions ont joué un rôle majeur dans la diffusion de l’opéra qui nécessite d’importants moyens matériels pour son exécution. Dès 1830, Ajaccio se dote du théâtre Saint-Gabriel qui accueille des troupes italiennes et y programme des opéras. L’ #opéra de #Bastia est inauguré le 15 novembre 1879 et suscite progressivement un véritable enthousiasme populaire. Il est conçu par l’architecte milanais Andrea Scala (1826-1982) à qui l’on doit la réalisation et la restructuration de vingt-quatre grands théâtres, dont ceux de Pise, Milan, Florence, Trieste ou Catane en Sicile. Il se caractérise par un style néoclassique prédominant, une capacité d’accueil d’environ 1 200 places et une acoustique jugée à plus d’un titre exceptionnelle. Son inauguration s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une vision patriotique de la IIIe République qui a à cœur, par le contenu de la programmation, de diffuser la culture française. Architecture during the reign of Maharana Jagat Singh II Jagniwas (Taj Lake Palace) Jagniwas is built of white marble is a Island Palace in Lake Pichola. Maharana Jagat Singh II started the construction on 4th May 1743 CE and the palace was completed in on 1st February 1746 CE. Maharana Jagat Singh II constructed Khush Mahal, Bada Mahal, Phool Mahal and Dhola Mahal in Jagniwas. According to the indigenous architecture, the palace was divided into Zenana and Mardana sections. The palace was constructed facing east, as per the Hindu Vastu Shashtra, allowing its inhabitants to pray to Surya, the Hindu sun god, at the crack of dawn. The successive rulers used this palace as their summer residence, holding their regal durbars in its courtyards lined with columns, pillared terraces, fountains, and gardens. The walls are made of black and white marbles; adorned by semi-precious stones and ornamented niches. Maharana Jagat Singh II also constructed Pitam Niwas and Ras Niwas in The Palace, Udaipur.
