Puppies have a really good way of wanting to be with us, wanting to comply with us, wanting to please us so they learn really easily. They learn obedience very easily. They learn to be off leash very easily. They learn to be with their group very easily and it can seem like weve done everything right and everything is perfect but a very compliant puppy can turn into a very challenging teenager and they often do because once the hormones kick in when they start going through puberty, when they start becoming an adolescent, then we get changes in the dogs where they challenge us a lot more where they want to seek the world more than they want to seek us and its very similar with children. For instance, when my five year old was young, she wanted to be just like me. She wanted to be a dog trainer. She wanted to wear my clothes and she wanted to look like me, wanted to talk like me and act like me. Shes becoming older now. Shes going to be twelve here pretty soon and thats happening a lot less, she doesnt want to look just like me. She doesnt want to act just like me. She doesnt want to be a dog trainer anymore and by the time shes 15, she might not want to be like mom at all and shes going to go through these stages of development. So, when you have a young pup, its great that theyre doing so well and that youve worked with them so well that youre getting all of this compliance but you should be prepared for that adolescent phase where they are going to push back, they are going to challenge, they are going to seek the world more than they seek you and in those stages, be prepared to go back strict structure to go back to fulfillment, to go back to working on your relationship so the dog does want to seek you and you dont wind up in a situation where your dog is running away, its getting hit by cars, its attacking other dogs, its more interested in the world than you because once youre there, its hard to reel them back in.
