The first photo is the one I love to share. The second is the reality of farming cut flowers and what doing this job looks like 99% of the time. The flowers are dying back, the insect pressure is heavy and many of our crops are succumbing to powdery mildew. It’s all just part of the process, and if I get nothing else out of this little adventure, I will get clarity on what it means for life to happen in seasons. . . Growing flowers, like most beautiful things in life, requires a lot of work. Most of the moments are ordinary, messy, and not very remarkable. But the true beauty of those moments is hard to miss when the seeds you have sown begin to bloom. Then the summer eases into Fall, the clean up begins, and it seems we all take a collective deep breath. * long post alert!!!! * hello lovely little zin zins! i’m in the car on my way back from london! my mom was storing our cutie pink booth in her living room + my partner (aka the luv of my life) drove us down to pick it up. we had a wonderful dinner too :)       today was a day that reminded me of my many firsts. my first job, my first pop up market, driving past the space where the first store i fell in love with used to be- anyone remember commander salamander???       wanna know what else? today on this day, sept 30, i went to view the shop for the first time! let me tell ya, i had NO idea what i was doing. i just kind of sent an email to an agent to see if they could show me the place. i didn’t know if anyone would even respond or how to go about going to see a commercial space.       my momma happened to be down for a visit the day of the showing. she was teaching me how to drive + got me a new pair of blundstones that actually fit. { fun fact: i used to have blundstones that we’re almost 2 sizes too big + i used to trip everyday LOL. i wish i was kidding 🤦🏻‍♀️ }      anyways! the agent responded + we confirmed a booking. my mom + i pulled into the thai lime parking lot. i looked her dead in the eyes + told her not to say ANYTHING for i didn’t want her to “ruin it” for me. she obeyed my absurd demand lol.      the ONLY thing i knew going into this showing was that my forever dream was to own my own flower + gift shop. i didn’t have previous sales. i didn’t have experience owning a business. i didn’t have a lot of money. i didn’t even have a business plan! oh + i didn’t have a rich husband (or husband for that matter) — something that my (no offence, whack) agent told me would be a huge problem when applying.       i immediately fell in love with the exposed brick + light fixtures + backyard. we looked around + i asked the most random questions. the showing was short + speedy. the agent literally had no faith in me being approved. i left with ummmm zero confidence + as confused as i was when i went in. *cntd in comments* - @pictusgoods on Instagram

- Warmer weather is giving me serious dahlia fever. Last year, we were shipped this variety in error. I never would have picked it but it became one of my favorites!

Sometimes I look around the city and imagine what it would be like if humans started living lightly on the earth. I see the oversized SUV’s and monster trucks go zooming by, monster houses with two people living in 30 rooms and people eating their way through super-sized meals and the earth’s resources and think “our planet can only handle so much disrespect and abuse before really fighting back”. Our sedentary lifestyle, stressed out lives and SAD diet have put a massive burden on the medical system. Our super-sized houses carry a toxic carbon load as do our vehicles and super-sized, meat-centric diets, slowly but surely destroying the health of the lands and seas. We rush around from one appointment to the next, not really enjoying our existence but also apparently not really knowing how to stop living the way we do. We pave over and spill oil on the earth, discard a ton of plastic waste as we careen through our day and yet only really worry about our bank accounts. We buy more, more and even more, making Jeff Bezos a gazillionaire but we are unable to fill that empty longing with our Amazon purchases so we decide that the next purchase will be the one that will make us happy. NO, ok then the one after that. An endless cycle of “retail therapy” ensues, just making us more broke and more distracted from our real issues. And our planet becomes our personal dumping ground. Imagine a world of living in harmony with the earth instead of ruthlessly trying to dominate it or mindlessly destroying it. Imagine a world of light living; a world of community and connection instead of consumerism. In the spirit of “It’s never too late”, I’m inviting you to join me in a Zero Waste Challenge. Let’s not mindlessly soldier on while our planet and its wild creatures are dying around us. Let’s be the change. Think of the good karma of living with the earth. Here are the first few Café au lait dahlias! These highly sought after beauties are just starting to produce blooms. Our first couple bunches went to @rivercityflowerexchange today. Dahlias prefer cooler temperatures of the fall, so it takes a little extra love to get them through the heat of summer. To protect the varieties that are particularly sensitive to insect damage we place a sheer bag around each individual bloom before it opens in the field. You can get dahlias from us this week by the bunch from @cvillecitymarkets and @localfoodhub farmers markets. Touch of frost hit the farm this morning and the 7 hours of below freezing temps tonight will take care of everything else. If you are new to growing our Dahlias, you may be able to save them by protecting them with a blanket tonight. Ideally the cloth should not touch the plant, but do the best you can. The weather will warm up after today, so it is worth the effort. Good luck. Farming is a roller coaster. A week and a half ago I didnt think I would be harvesting dahlias today. But I did! While we dont have the bucket loads I thought we would have we do have a modest harvest to share with you tomorrow at the @daybreakfarmersmarket from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Soda Row. 💚 While that is good news, unfortunately we will not be back to the South Jordan farmers market this season. We loved our time there and are planning to be there next year. So for the next two Saturdays we will be at the Daybreak farmers market and then our season will be over. Everyone at the farm is frankly bowled over by the warm and generous reception we received upon our return to @unsqgreenmarket in New York City. From the bottom of our hearts we thank everyone for this incredible support. It has been a tough season all around, not only due to the pandemic and loss of business that this causes, but also because the dahlias are particularly finicky this year. They were incredibly late due to the extreme heat in earlier months, which has now quickly turned to very cold nights. We are hoping not to have an early frost. Maybe it is a blessing in disguise - no weddings and celebrations due to restrictions means fewer homes for the flowers. Some well-wishers have gone as far to say that the dahlias know it is a low selling year so have decided to comply! Though yields may be lower this year, beauty most certainly is not. Every new variety that opens continues to take my breath away. On Heirloom Mums // Part 21 of #30daysofHillen . Mums get a bad rap because of the sad, tired, boring ones you find in the grocery store floral department or the roundy-moundy potted ones you find at hardware stores in the fall. But #heirloommums are completely different. Theyre tall, they come in an amazing array of colors, they last 2 weeks in the vase, and they give dahlias a run for their money. . The first few years I never grew mums because all the local growers I knew had varieties that bloomed in November, well after our first hard frost. They only had success growing them in high tunnels, and I dont have any protected space. . Then @shepardsphilly introduced me to earlier blooming varieties, and I planted 150 seedlings of 6 different varieties in 2018. I was an immediate convert, and I sold every stem. That winter I cut them back hard and let them overwinter to see what would happen. . Then I left the country on our epic family bike adventure in late summer and returned in mid-October to a fully blooming mum crop. It was the best welcome home gift. . This year were growing 450 plants and 12 varieties. Theyre very close to blooming, and I cant wait. The first year I was so excited that I started cutting and selling them before they even fully opened. Everyone loved them, but as I watched them bloom out even further I realized you have to let them hit their stride. ROCK RUN ASHLEY, you guys.. That totally elusive hard to photograph color that Ive never seen in any other flower! We just LOVE this one, and we tried unsuccessfully for about 3 years to get our hands on them! They are SO rare!!! Last spring we finally landed 10 tubers!! Thru taking cuttings and due to the very productive nature of these plants, they have multiplied unbelievably!! We put 1,000 tubers into storage this fall!!! We dont plan to sell all of those of course, we usually keep a healthy stock for ourselves, but never fear! We should have more then enough to go around this fall!! Meet Jowey Winnie, my favorite dahlia. I love the fullness of her petals and her coloring is just divine. 🏵️ Dahlias are native to Mexico and other parts of Central America. In the wild most are simple flowers with five or six petals around a central disc. The dahlias weve come to love have been bred extensively providing a host of shapes and almost every color but blue. Theres even dahlias that are so dark they appear almost black. 🏵️ Dahlias benefit greatly from the use of flower food and clean vases. They are not the longest lived cut flower. Usually the bigger the dahlia the shorter the vase life. So those big gorgeous Cafe au Lait dahlias that we all love so much typically only have a vase life of about 3 days. The ball varieties, like shown above, are usually the longest lived with a vase life of about 5 to 7 days. They also benefit from a little chill time after harvest, so our dahlias always go directly into our floral cooler once weve cut them. 🏵️ Because of their delicate petals, and shorter vase life locally grown dahlias are where its at. This dahlia Cafe-Au-Lait was cut when it had just started opening - only the tiny triangle of petals were showing. It fully opened in about two days after it was put in the pot with clay and water, under 45 degree angle facing down. I did not spray the petals because it was very busy during those days, and I just left it alone, thats why it looks slightly dehydrated.
