The #UMBRELLAACADEMY #APOCALYPSESUITE portfolios are now up in the shop! . LINK IN BIO! . The portfolio includes 8.5 x 11 ea (Set of 3) 1 exclusive FOIL sticker Giclee Print Artist Edition of 50 Illustrated Envelope Signed & Numbered . I also made a new #enamelpin, #sticker, and art for the envelope. I wanted this to look as fancy as possible. . PLATE 1 . I had little over a week to design this & two other full-page illos for the original project. Normally, it takes me at least a week to design ONE illo. ONE! Since it was a weekly magazine the deadline was INSANE! My brain still hurts thinking about it. But I did it and I’m very proud of how it turned out. . Kerrang had wanted me to illustrate #GerardWay from the #ThreeCheersforSweetRevenge days. I thought it would be fun to draw him in one of the Umbrella Academy schoolboy-uniform and looking kinda bratty. But that got nixed. So I drew him in a suit - similar to the outfit he wore during the #TasteOfChaos tour. (I was on that tour as well so I saw them play every night. Tons of fun!) . This was originally meant to be the cover of the magazine. But at the last minute, they used it for the back cover instead. Ah well…it’s still a cover!!! . The other idea was that they wanted me to do a #skeleton over Gerard - similar to the style of my poster work. We all felt that it was too busy & (not deadline-friendly) and nixed that. Whew! . I used a #drybrush technique on his hair since he wore it messy. It was weird to use minimal line work on this. But…I had a deadline #DeadlinesRuleEverythingAroundMe & I wanted to build up the illustration with shading and coloring. . The thing is, I really didn’t know how to use photoshop. I used it to make jpegs!!! (I worked mostly in illustrator.) So I had to learn on the spot. Since then I’ve made sure to improve on every project involving photoshop! My poor brain… . Here is a part of the article by Juliana Lopez, thank you so much. In this monthly series, Artsy’s Curatorial team features a group of five emerging and noteworthy artists who are working in a similar style or spirit as a well-known or established artist. This month, we focus on Banksy, the infamous street artist who has turned into a global phenomenon through his trademark style and penchant for dramatic and very public presentations of his work. Lady AIKO, is best recognized for her large-scale, colorful murals that merge popular Japanese and Western art styles. Born and raised in Tokyo, Lady AIKO moved to New York City in the mid-1990s, working as an apprentice for artist Takashi Murakami before going on to pursue her M.F.A in media studies at the New School. Later in the decade, Lady AIKO teamed up with artists Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller to form the artist collective known as FAILE. She worked with the collective for several years before branching off and establishing her solo career as Lady AIKO. Around that same time, she collaborated with Banksy for the production of his film “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” Working in the predominantly male field of street art, Lady AIKO established a style uniquely her own, painting mostly female figures and reclaiming the male gaze. Her heavily layered murals are the product of hundreds of hand-cut stencils, and draw on a range of influences from Japanese woodblock prints to graphic novels and pin-up art.
