The theatre of Epidavros, Peloponnese, Greece. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a theatre in the Greek city of Epidaurus, located on the southeast end of the sanctuary dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. It is built on the west side of Cynortion Mountain, near modern Lygourio, and belongs to the Epidaurus Municipality. It is considered to be the most perfect ancient Greek theatre with regard to acoustics and aesthetics. According to Pausanias, the ancient theatre was constructed at the end of the 4th century BC by the architect Polykleitos the Younger. Pausanias praises the theatre for its symmetry and beauty. At a maximum capacity of 13,000 to 14,000 spectators, the theatre hosted music, singing and dramatic games that were included in the worship of Asclepius. It was also used as a means to heal patients, since there was a belief that the observation of dramatic shows had positive effects on mental and physical health. The first systematic excavation of the theatre began in 1881 by the Archaeological Society, under the direction of archaeologist Panayis Kavvadias and preserved in very good condition thanks to the restorations of P. Kavvadias (1907), of A. Orlandos (1954-1963) and the Preservation Committee for Epidaurus Monuments (1988 to 2016). Industrial Strength Symmetry 7 // We’re back this week with the next instalment of the Industrial Strength Symmetry series, dedicated to the architecture of factory buildings, a unique institution born and bred and space-starved Hong Kong. For those who joined us recently: factory buildings are high-rise buildings with spaces for rent, to be primarily used for light industry. In the first wave of Hong Kong’s postwar economic boom, many small businesses took off from the humble beginnings of a factory building space, making plastic flowers, toys, spare parts and basic electronics. Manufacturing has since moved away from Hong Kong, and factory buildings began to lose relevance. Certainly, no new ones have been built for several decades now. Those that remain survived by adaptation. Factory buildings nowadays have a very interesting mix of tenants. Yes, some small factory lots remain (small scale import-and-export is a common use), but factory lots are also now used as party rooms for Hongkongers with apartments too small to entertain guests, as paintball rooms, as cafes and restaurants, showrooms for specialised products such as wine fridges, or even office space for creatives who don’t want to pay downtown rent. The architecture of factory buildings is typically utilitarian - windows and glass are considered a luxury and are used sparingly. But because such spaces tend to be quite warm, there is always an abundance of air conditioners tacked to the outside, like barnacles to the hull of a ship. (Unlike fancier buildings, which have found ways to house air conditioners in a tidier and more discrete manner, factory buildings were built at a time when such considerations were not in mind.) Some of the later versions, especially those by private developers, were allowed to have a small architectural flourish to them, such as this specimen - Paramount Building in Chai Wan East, which features some nice arches and a central section (presumably a lift lobby) with ceiling-to-floor glass. - @itsbernie81 on Instagram

Its time for Trainee Tuesday again! This time with Carl from Gothenburg, Sweden. My rotation with the wind segment is coming to an end this week and I will take the opportunity to reflect back on the past 6 months. During this time I have gained a lot of knowledge and a wide network within the Wind industry.
