Well well well, it’s time for the ritual post-grad life update post! On May 5th, I received my bachelor’s from UF, majoring in Sociology. I also picked up a couple minors, one in Nonprofit Organizational Leadership and the other in International Development and Humanitarian Assistance. A mouthful, I know. Many of you might ask, what exactly does one do with a sociology degree? While many of my college peers would answer such a question with “law school,” “social work,” “policy analyst (whatever that is),” or “PR specialist,” I have chosen to answer it a little differently. On June 10th, I fly to D.C. for my orientation to work with the Peace Corps in Benin, this tiny country (population 11 million) in West Africa that I actually didn’t know existed until researching it before applying. I chose Benin because it’s one of the poorest 20 countries in the world: 34% of the households are food insecure, and 45% of the kids under 5 suffer from malnutrition. I have this crazy notion that it’s 2019, and if we’ve been splitting the atom for a while and sending folks into space… we should damn sure be able to make sure the already existing humans on our planet have the basic necessities for a healthy life. It’s a core part of being a human on our dear spaceship Earth. Big ideas, I know, but it’s only accomplished by all of us fulfilling our small roles in our respective callings. Alright, down from the soapbox! To be honest, theres quite a few mixed feelings about this time of life. On one hand, it’s beautiful to be taking risks, accepting challenge, and having faith in yourself enough to step out. On the other, it’s tough saying goodbye to family and friends, leaving the comfortability of the US, and submitting myself to embracing the unknown . Decisions like these come with their fair share of uncertainty and instability, but still, I know I’m guided, and whether I decide to stay the full 2 years or not, Ill live singing and dancing along the way. Family!
