As i’m dropping the 9th Ndyuka podcast GAAN-LO GAAMA next week, i want to explain the concept of Ndyuka podcast a bit more. Ndyuka podcast is all about me trying to find my roots and rhythms fine lined in between the sound of techno. Challenging myself to dig deep into the tracks and connect them as one with an consistent groove and rhythm blended in each other. This is the sound i stand for and like to push forward. All the ndyuka podcasts are very similar and recognizable as a sound but still different from one another. Every name has a story behind it and is directly connected to the marrons of surinam. Growing as a dj now, i often think about all the amazing producers who provide me with great music. This really makes my job and doing what i love to do alot easier and more unique. You can not cook your favourite meal without having the best ingredients. This is the way i look at dj’ing as well, i could not make the podcasts i’m making without the best fitting tracks possible. This is the first mural I ever completed. Rewind to 2018: I just moved to Long Beach, my art career was basically nonexistent, so I decided to uber to pay my bills. One of the first people I drove was @rustydeeble - we started talking about art, I showed him some pieces, and I told him how much I would love to prove and challenge myself by painting a mural. He instantly offered me his blank wall at @distudioslb - a few weeks later, we made it happen. Now it’s 2020. I’m in Long Beach completing another mural and decided to throw some doves into my first wall. I am eternally grateful to Rusty for helping me gain the confidence I needed to succeed as an artist and for giving me the opportunity to grow and level up creatively. If you don’t think you’ll be great, you’ll never be great. Keep pushing yourself. There will always be hiccups and obstacles you have to overcome to get where you want to be. More than a century old La Pasita, located in the central neighborhood of Los Sapos, is one of the oldest and most famous canteens in Puebla. It was inaugurated in 1916 by Emilio Contreras Aicardo, whose son is the current owner, and they have been attending to clients for more than 60 years. The place was originally a grocery store named El Gallo del Oro, but a few months after its opening, the owner decided to turn it into a liqueur bar. He invented a drink that gave the establishment its current name: pasita – a sweet liqueur made of raisins, served in a caballito (tequila glass), and decorated with a cube of fresh goat cheese and a raisin stuck on a toothpick. - @izzyrivero on Instagram

This has been a revealing time for so many of us. It’s proof of the work that needs to be done, the labor of resistance is never ending and we have to all do our part to continue to dismantle white supremacy. Although TallBoys is closed for now, we want to be active in our duty to participate and support Black Lives in Tucson. We have started raising money to donate to a local organizations and are broadening our use of the Tallboys restaurant space. We want it to be a space of resources for those who are marching as well as a place to grab educational resources for continued learning and unlearning. i’d like to talk more about mental illness on this platform. i’m not an expert by any means, but i know what it’s like to be at war with your essence your whole life only to find out you are the most lovely creature you’ve ever known. i was diagnosed bipolar 2 this past winter and i felt so much relief & release when i found out. it allowed me to accept myself and in turn get to know myself in the most intimate of ways. i discovered the way i flow, the way my cycles work naturally and the way the Universe flows through me. the stigma around mental illness is a scam. we are all made unique and it takes acceptance of and surrender to our selves to come into our power. i’ve battled with suicide, cutting, depression, and death in my body since i was a child. i hated this body i am housed in. but being diagnosed(along with the passionate support of my family and a tirelessly present friend) freed me to to pursue the notion that i was not broken, that i was worth it all. i say this to say i love this body. i honor her and i’m grateful for the grace she gives me. she always meets me where i’m at. if you’re struggling with depression, suicide, manic thoughts or any torture of the mind, hit me. what i know i want to share. because i had no idea life could be this good, this steady, this full. i want you to know too♥️ foto by my darling @lara_kaur - @astu.music on Instagram

I tried Jamaica. Then Belize. Then the Dominican Republic. Traveled to other islands in between. Then settled on my choice in 2016. It was an eight year process to find the right fit! And even before I decided on any place, I did six month stints a few times to see what it’s really like. It takes time, but the best way to start is now by planning and researching! ⁣ 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻. ⁣ 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 -Lower cost of living *if* you do it right (if you want to live like you live in the US, it‘ll cost ya the same!) -A sense of community and courtesy which are both lacking in “western” countries -Nature all around, from beaches to forests and waterfalls, even mountains -Tons of culture daily, from food to music and art -Access to natural foods: fresh fruits, veggies, coconuts… lots of opportunities to eat healthy vs packaged (but that’s a choice) I could GO ON! ⁣ 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 -Everything moves slowly, or starts late -You may *occasionally* get discriminated against because you “look like a local” (= i.e. you are a brown person; this is across the board at all the destinations I’ve lived in), but it happens less than in the US -The power can go out regularly (once a week); those who can afford it get an inverter -Electricity is expensive so you won’t be pumping A/C all day -Dating is not any easier than in the US, people are people; thankfully I’ve found my better half but it wasn’t right away and I wasn’t looking. .
