Now that our film “Winds of Adak” has been out for several weeks (hit the link in my bio if you missed it) I want to take some time to talk more about gear. Gear is often a revolving door for me. My kit is never static (aside from a few key pieces) and so I keep testing and making adjustments... it’s an element of being an outdoorsman that I think we all love and enjoy. At least I do. Sometimes I think I find a better “mouse trap”, but I never truly know until I actually use and test a piece of equipment on a hunt. How I picture it functioning and reality are sometimes light-years apart.⁣ ⁣ Up first I want to talk about my binos and spotting scope from @mavenbuilt. They open up the world around me. I’ve written about this before, but having the ability to glass and see all that is around you, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, most often will leave you in a curious awe. I once had a very gifted photography professor in college tell me, “the closer we get to a subject matter, the more interesting it becomes to us”. Maven Optics get me closer. At the beginning of this month I was feeling a little lost so I decided to seek some help. The first advice I received was to get rid of personal “stuff” on my social media pages and make sure my brand colours are visible in every post. Initially I looked through my feed with rapidly increasing embarrassment at all the “personal posts” – “how did I get this so wrong?”, I thought and wondered if rose tinting some skies could quickly get me back “on brand” (joke). But a huge positive of this month was meeting @aligroves she reminded me that I am my brand and what drives me forward is my desire to live well, in good health, so that I can keep enjoying all the personal experiences I share. She listened to my story and then told it back to me. She helped me see that I share what I share not to portray a life of perpetually “gadding about” in the great outdoors, grinning into the camera, but to share the privileged moments that inspire me and “refill my cup” so that in turn, I can keep inspiring and motivating my clients to live as well as they can. Wandering the paths of Quiraing . . Scotland completely exceeded my expectations, and the Isle of Skye in particular has to be one of the most ruggedly beautiful places I’ve ever been. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but Gone West was founded in 2013.. right when the chart begins to rise. 🌳 But we have a long climb ahead of us. The government cannot do this alone. They try, bless them, but if we want to make this goal a reality then we need the private sector to step in and take responsibility for all the rest of their taking. Great examples include @brewdogofficial who is planting 1 million trees to go climate positive. 🌳 If you look closely at the numbers on the far right - representing thousands of hectares, you’ll see the goal is 30,000. Multiply that by the average tree density of 3000 and you will get 90 million. 90 Million trees per year. That’s what the Council for Climate Change has deemed necessary to combat the environmental crisis. 🌳 To put that in perspective, it’s a forest 3 times the size of Barcelona. “Third Time Lucky”? Or “3 Strikes and Your OUT!” I had the best weekend ever and for a change it was all about me 🤣 I spent a couple of days on the grouse moor last week with my young dog Wolf, covering approx 50Km over two days in the beating line. The weather was fantastic, if a little too hot 🥵 but we won’t complain about that. We were part of a dedicated team and helped account for 200brace of Scotland’s finest wild game birds. We then hit the road to visit a very good friend and chill out in the late summer sun 🌞 drinking beer 🍻 and resting our weary legs, poor Wolf really appreciated his rest day. Then we were on the road again as we had been very kindly invited to experience Sika Stags being called! Now many may think this a bit of a busmans holiday but I haven’t been this excited in a long time. The stags were only really starting to whistle which is one of the most eerie sounds ever but boy does it get the heart racing! So this particular hunt was an early morning hunt where we were blessed with the weather again, the sun decided to shine down on us and there was barely a whisp of wind. Not ideal hunting weather but that’s what made this hunt. Me and my guide for the day and the dogs walked out to the end of a quiet secluded forest with the wind blowing up our backsides. The dogs intermittently scenting that there were animals lurking in the trees 🌲 We got to a point where we could over watch a clearing, got set up and started to make a few exploratory calls to see if anyone out there wanted to chat back! Quiet! Then on a distant open hill came a dark silhouette cruising across the ground . We called, he stopped and listened. He began to cruise toward us again. We called he stopped and looked, listened but never muttered a moan back, but he was intent on closing the 1Km + that still lay between us. He was very purposeful in the way he closed the distance but he was playing a tactical game, coming in on a diagonal and using the relief of the ground to sneak in on us. Who was hunting who?! He hit the boundary fence which separated the open ground and the forestry but he didn’t come straight in like we expected him too, this was a sneaky old stag!.... - @prosportingsolutions on Instagram

We could all use a little good news, and we got some great news this morning. Search-dog Grace, and her handler, Philip, became the first qualified mountain-rescue, trail-scenting, search-dog-and-handler team in Ireland. Grace and Philip have been working together since April 2019, and have been training with UK-K9 Training for Excellence for the past year. David Jones, head instructor for the National Association of Specialist Dog Users (NASDU), assessed Grace and Philip this weekend. The assessment featured a number of trails, including a mile-long, one-hour-old trail with different surfaces and changes of direction. Trail-scenting dogs are an excellent asset in the search for missing people. They use a scent article (a piece of clothing, for example) from the missing person and follow the trail left by that individual. The dogs are trained to pursue only the scent of the missing person, while ignoring other people/scents in the area. Congratulations to Grace and Philip. MENTAL HEALTH • • I had an anxiety attack at 5.50am this morning right before work. It is not normal for me to suffer anxiety with such severity but this hasn’t been a normal week. Your mind can only take on so much, when it’s full it’s full and then it’s going to start to leak out. And leaks are messy right? This morning mine came in the form of a rapid heart beat, struggling to breath normally and tears. The calm only came from letting the people around me know it was happening and allowing them to help. It’s not always easy to share but what can really help is realising that telling people you are feeling sick mentally is no different than telling people you have a cold • • Thank you to the loving people who I had around me today (and everyday) both at home and at work, your kindness helped me through 🧡 • • We are all human and none of us are invincible. I’m not sure I could have guessed that I’d end my 20s by climbing a mountain, but yesterday, I was able to do it surrounded by many of the people I love most. A really special way to end one decade and mark the beginning of another. . . Reflecting from a height, I spent my 20s racing through a list of ambitions and was fortunate to achieve so many of them. I visited parts of the world that I could have never imagined and found friends in so many corners of the world - pals who have shaped me, who I lean on in the most challenging moments... and who I irritate with endless voice messages. The last decade was a sprint, a joyous race to create change and to amplify important conversations on disability, education, access and design. It was also a decade of me figuring out who I am, what matters to me and what I stand for. I’m still figuring that out and probably will be forever. . . Today marks the start of my 30s. I’m not sure what this decade might hold, but I couldn’t have predicted all that was made real in my 20s. . . By the time she was 16,400-feet high in the Himalayas, Elise Wortley had learned to deal with altitude sickness and blistered feet. She’d even gotten used to her uncomfortable leather boots slipping on the rocks as she picked her way between sheets of ice and tufts of coarse grass. But as the sun went down near Kangchenjunga basecamp—the third highest peak in the world—it was the extreme, bone-chilling temperature that nearly broke her.⁣ ⁣ Nowadays, trekkers in Thangu Valley are equipped with snow-proof tents and buttoned up in state-of-the-art clothing to protect them from the harsh conditions that characterize that strip of northern India. Not so for Wortley. In 2017, she embarked on a journey that she’d been dreaming of since age 16, when she read a book that changed her life: My Journey to Lhasa by Alexandra David-Néel. Published in 1927, the autobiography charts the French female explorer’s 14-year expedition to Tibet, between 1911 and 1925. ⁣ ⁣ Wortley recreated a portion of David-Néel’s journey and traded in all modern-day comforts for a yak wool coat, rubber-soled boots, and a wooden backpack. Mountaineering Scotland members Katherine and David kindly shared their #ConsiderateCamping photos from Loch Turret a few weeks ago - their first lightweight wild camp after travel restrictions were lifted. Katherine told us We wanted to camp as cleanly as possible, so cycled from Dunblane. We did the full round of the loch taking in Auchnafree Hill and Ben Chonzie before cycling home. ⛰ MOUNTAIN SHOUT-OUT! ⛰ (well, ssshhh, actually this mountain summit is actually all the Llyn below) . Introducing Llyn Y Fan Fach! It comes with some pretty dodgy folk lore. Ive read up on it and what I can ascertain is that the usual dialogue occues of boy meets girl 💁‍♀️🙎‍♂️ she is well fit (and came out of the lake), he says I promise to not knock you about, they get married💒, get knocked up🤱🍼 push out some kids, have a farm. He then hits her 3 times (3 times too many) and she says Im off she goes backs to the lake and takes their Oxes with her. Apparently you can see marked furrows running across Myddfai Mountain to the edge of Llyn Y Fan Fach, which apparently proves the story is true. . GENDER AND SEXUALITY - I really wanted to have a talk about discovering your sexuality and gender identity, especially alongside having a mental illness. So here it is. I personally describe myself as gay. I use that as an umbrella term, as I have also struggled with gender dysphoria. I admit to having repressed that particular issue for a long time, literally because I saw it was too difficult to address alongside all my other issues. I still haven’t exactly come to terms with whatever the hell I am comfortable as, but I’m doing my best. I know that I prefer to dress in a ‘masculine’ way, yet I also hate to try to fit into one category. So essentially, I don’t have a fucking clue what my gender identity is. And that’s OKAY. If you’re in the same box as me - don’t stress over it. (I know, easy to say, difficult to do) It’s okay to not know exactly who you are yet. It’s okay if you never know. Just do what feels comfortable. Dress how you feel comfortable, and don’t be afraid to ask others to accommodate your preferences. Gender is fluid, as they say, and while it’s confusing, just remember that you don’t have to fit into a box. You don’t have to have a label. The same applies for sexuality. Who you like is YOUR business. You are not obliged to put a label on yourself to make other people happy. And it’s okay to have a label, if that’s what you want. Remember - it is YOU. And you are the one that matters he most! Being LGBT+ is associated with having mental illnesses, which I personally believe is partly because of the stigma that somehow still remains in schools. Seriously, some people still are homophobic and transphobic. Just grow up idiots. #staycation, Kerry ireland, well you totally rocked!💕💥🥳 . too brief but absolutely lush! . The bestest of company a woman could ask for adventuring with 💕💕... the views .. the insane hiking .. wild swimming with the Last castle that fell to Cromwell (its an Irish History thing ..🤣) as your back drop.. sampling local gins, and the bestest of food .. #perfect!💥😁 . I left ireland for uni in England when I was 18; desperate for adventure, travel,new sights to see and new people to meet . . If I wasn’t at uni I was off; adventuring/working in new lands .. globe trotting to as many exotic spots as possible . . I always have had a sense of urgency that life and been a “serious doctor “ was gonna stop all this adventuring and I needed to pack in as much as I could .. as quickly as I could ..whenever possible 🤣🤣 . Uni finished .. but the thirst for travelling . didn’t ... so I didn’t either!... 🤷‍♀️ . Infact , It’s taken Covid to stop me looking for adventure and thrills around the globe .. but to focus more closely to home. . . So strangely I’ve jumped into COVID restrictions fairly easily: . - a chance to just accept life’s simplicites .. .. and explore what’s been right under my nose all these years , an area of my homeland Ireland that’s always been on “my list”.. but always got side swiped by my want for excitement on some other side of the globe .. . Kerry, ireland you seriously rocked my world. 💕💥🥳 ... The older I get .. the more simplicity seems to be calling.. the more my heart is drawn back to home in Ireland.. family,..and where my adventuring started many moons ago. .
