My gender transition from female to genderless/non-binary is complete. After a lifetime of internal dialogue about whether Im male or female something became clear - none of those words were mine to begin with. From a young age I struggled with gender conformity and kept pushing away the call to reject the gender assigned to me at birth. Afraid of not being accepted back into certain countries, afraid of scaring family, afraid of the many forms Id have to fill in forcing me to choose a box that isnt true. The thing is whenever I do past life regressions, shamanic journeys or make love, I experience myself as genderless. My soul has been showing me that if Im really serious about Sovereignty and creating a new world, I have to let old concepts fall away. How can we liberate ourselves from subtle societal binds? How do we embody the systems change we dream of? For me, it begins with Body Sovereignty. This means not allowing anyone to project, label, define, or box up this body - Energy in Form. I am a manifestation of two people who fell in love. Period. Im no longer a Her/She. Please refer to me as They/Them. Feeling an incredible sense of peace alongside deep vulnerability like most coming out stories...But Fuck it, Im here, Im genderless and even more in love with life. This is a lot bigger than just ABS CBN. Its not a coincidence that the anti-terror bill was quickly passed during these hearings. This all sets a truly terrifying precedent for our country. Silencing the press, preventing the ability to protest, all while using an army of hired internet trolls to control and spread disinformation on Facebook. Most of this country is too poor to afford internet and relies on the free internet provided by Facebook. These people are easily succeptible to the torrent of lies and propaganda spread by this administrations hired lackeys. One of the most important jobs we have as the media is to call out bullshit when we see it. If this government can freely and unjustly shut down the press, silence dissent, all while spreading disinformation and taking advantage of those that are vulnerable, what do you call that? Its called fucking tyranny. In a political system with so much visible and widespread corruption, the medias role as a check/balance is of the utmost importance. Artist Feature: Cole Pauls is a Tahltan comic artist, illustrator, and printmaker hailing from Haines Juction with a BFA in Illustration from Emily Carr. Residing in Vancouver, Cole focuses on his two comic series, recently winning the Best Zine of the Year award in 2020. Cole has supported many of our College programs including the Indigenous Math Camp and Indigenous Upgrading Program as a workshop facilitator and guest speaker and has graciously shared his Orange Shirt Day illustration with us. The illustration was initially commissioned by BYTE and the Yukon Assembly of First Nations. “For my Orange Shirt Day illustration, I depicted a boy from the Wolf Clan and girl from the Crow Clan in full regalia, singing and drumming to pay respect to all the victims and survivors of Residential Schools. I could preach this right now (but I won’t hold you). Think about all the hymns & songs our grandparents sang. Think about the climate during those times. Who but God could they hope & depend on? “My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus blood & righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly lean on Jesus name” Our grandparents didn’t have the education or “access” we have right now. For them, EVERYTHING they got, every opportunity, every rising sun, every dollar, every meal, every protection, came as a result of their faith. They were SOLELY reliant on their source versus a system that was structured for them to always struggle and be less than. When they said God brought them from a mighty long way, I never considered the way. Slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow, discrimination and injustice at every hand. That prayer for the hedge of protection, that prayer to keep us from hurt, harm and danger, that prayer to protect us from dangers seen AND unseen...THAT was what they had. Their faith. Their word. A pair of ondel-ondel or large puppet figures are commonly seen roaming the streets of Jakarta. They will almost always be found on significant festivals celebrating the city, or other big public events. But, why are these festive figures actually kind of scary? Well, this has to do with its history. Believe it or not, ondel-ondel have existed since 1602. They are ancestral symbols said to look after the community, or society at large. According to the old Betawi people, these giant puppets functioned as instruments for a kind of exorcism, repelling spirits said to cause disturbances. Similar to Balis ogoh-ogoh that come out on the eve of Nyepi Day of Silence, the ondel-ondel would be paraded around the village to shoo the negative forces away. The construction of the ondel-ondel is therefore not arbitrary, it is actually ritualistic - or at least it used to be! The makers themselves had to perform certain rituals throughout the process of the construction, such as presenting offerings like frankincense and seven kinds of flower. Only by doing this will the creation of these multicoloured marionettes run smoothly; but more importantly, these rituals make sure the ondel themselves are possessed by evil spirits! From 1966 to 1977, the function of ondel-ondel was changed by Ali Sadikin, the first Governor of Jakarta. Their use was thus changed as a symbol of Jakarta, the Betawi doll, and since then there has been no more traditions or ritual of parading around the village. I saw how the effects of climate change are impacting Torres Strait Islanders like Yessie. Erosion & rising seas are washing away the land & putting their island homes, sacred sites & cultures at risk. As a proud Pacific Islander, I’ve also seen how the climate crisis is impacting my ancestral homelands too. The Australian government needs to be held accountable for its climate inaction.
