Recuerdo de ese día la conexión y el poder de mi cuerpo y el de Rafael, el placer, la felicidad de compartirlo con mi mamá, mi hermana y mi hija, a Maria Inés, toda ella, no sabiendo usar la cámara que estrenaba por esos días y la puso en blanco y negro sin querer, y con una fecha un año antes y salieron así como las ven, para mi lo son todo, igual que Maria Inés. Inmejorable el sostén de mi hermana dándome aliento y aire cuando yo colgaba como lora en la bañera y me asusté porque perdía sangre, supo darme cada palabra justa y hacerme reír entre contracciones. Recuerdo a Fernando entrando de casualidad a la habitación después de unas horas y que lo miré y le dije ¡está naciendo! Y se sentó en el piso al lado de la puerta, sonrió y cerró los ojos ♡ Siento todavía los abrazos de Andrea, tan tan necesarios. It has taken a lot of effort over the years to learn how to love your mother the way God intended. The world doesn’t teach that message. It tries to define a man by his social status, strength, work ethic, income, and hell, even how well he can grow a beard. It judges him by how he treats “His girl.” Because the world has defined him as more valuable than you for far too long. Boys have been fed these messages the way you have been made to believe your worth is in your appearance. I wish I could tell you that men will look past your beauty and just see you as an equal. That if you excel at something, they will talk about your talent without having to add their opinion on your looks. The world has told men they have a right to comment on a woman’s appearance whenever they see fit. That it isn’t inappropriate or disrespectful to diminish her abilities while fawning over her beauty. I have witnessed it many times with your mother. And you are already experiencing these issues yourself. I have already witnessed two boys fighting over you. Their attempts at manipulation, desire to force you to choose who you like best. You showed me the text from one that said he was committing suicide because you wouldn’t pick him. I wish that at 11 years old, you would just be allowed to be you. But I can’t change the world. I can’t teach each boy you will meet the lessons I am still working on myself. All I can do, though, is to try and set an example of what love looks like up close. I remember thinking at the start of the relationship that I hope liam doesn’t think my cellulite is ugly. That I hope he doesn’t find me unattractive after seeing my dimply butt and cellulite covered legs. My legs have always been my biggest insecurity. The thing that held me back from wearing shorts, from going to the beach with my friends and from letting my partner see me naked. My insecurity was eating at me every time I walked around in my underwear. “Can he notice my cellulite?” “Does he still think I’m attractive?”, “Is he turned off by my cellulite?”. So many thoughts were running through my mind, all focused around my insecurity. Every time my legs were exposed my insecurities escalated. I thought because I was aware of my cellulite he would be too. I thought because society labeled cellulite as a flaw he would think less of me. But the truth is he didn’t care. He didn’t notice my cellulite and loves my body regardless. He didn’t see the things I disliked about my body. Your partner/person don’t notice the parts of yourself you are self conscious about as you don’t notice the things they are self conscious off. They love you for your mind, heart and soul! Your beautiful body is just a bonus! They don’t notice the parts of yourself you dislike. They don’t see the insecurities you have been ashamed of for many years! Society and diet culture have brainwashed us to believe that in order to be worthy of love we have to have the perfect body. In order to find a partner we have to look a certain way. But that just isn’t true. You already have a perfect body! You already are worthy of love! Only we see our insecurities and only we have the power to demolish those negative thoughts we have formulated around our bodies. You deserve to feel loved! You deserve to feel empowered and when that person tells you that you are beautiful I hope you believe them because it is true! So these comments were done by the same person, on the same post And it really made me think. Now, these comments didn’t upset me in the slightest. It was just annoying. I am fully aware of the stigma around stomas and the ignorance of some people. I am also fully aware of the fact that people who leave these comments would never say this to someone’s face and just hide behind a screen. I do what I do to try and get rid of the stigma and make people less afraid and judgemental around stomas - because they save lives everyday and they’re nothing to be ashamed of. The person wrote the first comment, people started to be mean to them and then they deleted the comment and replaced it with “🤢🤢🤢”. I then deleted this second comment and blocked them. But it made me think. The fact that they deleted their first comment because people were being mean back to them… but then REPLACED it with another? Even though, especially during these times, we are all behind our screens… that doesn’t mean that we don’t really exist. That doesn’t mean that we’re not human. That doesn’t mean that there’s not a real person behind that account. That doesn’t mean that feelings can’t get hurt. Apart from being frustrated, I wasn’t upset by these comments. But suppose they left those comments on someone’s very first post showing their stoma bag, who was incredibly self conscious of having a stoma and is doing their best to try and accept it. Just imagine how that person may feel. It may not feel real to the troll who’s insulting them. It might not feel like their contributing to cyber bullying and the stigmas of stomas and disabilities. But it CAN have very REAL consequences. Hurtful words could lead to another family’s grieving. The pathological need for predatory male photographers to acquire troves of nude photographs of young models in the name of “art” is disturbing to say the least. Many of the ones preyed upon are often new to the industry and lack enough experience to navigate uncomfortable situations or don’t have the proper management to guard their best interests and safety. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This deliberate exertion of power and entitlement is a tale as old as time, but fashion’s reckoning with #MeToo is still new. In the last couple years, we’ve seen survivors come forward about their experiences with Bruce Weber, Mario Testino, Timur Emek, and Marcus Hyde, but most recently, @emrata ’s op-ed for @nymag also highlighted the difficulty for models to retain any ownership their own image. It’s a problem that’s especially hard to reconcile when the photos are compromising in nature and plied through psychological, verbal, or physical coercion. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Coupled with the fact that photographers often have rights to these photographs in perpetuity, it’s an outlook that could deter any model from working in this industry. Such was the case with Paulina Keamy ( @paulinacharette ), who agreed to shoot with NYC-based photographer @david_paul_larson after he reached out to her on instagram in 2016. “I wanted to work with him because I saw he was shooting girls from agencies I wanted to be signed with,” Keamy said. “I thought his interest in shooting me was confirmation that I was good enough to be signed to these agencies too.” Larson by that time, had already shot big names like Adriana Lima and Lucky Blue Smith, which added a sense of legitimacy for Keamy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fully aware it would be a nude photoshoot with a release signed, that didn’t stop things from getting uncomfortable. “While shooting, he would say things like, ‘what is sexy to you? Abortion is a privilege in the UK as we still have the NHS and it is legal. Yet so many still have to perform dangerous practices on themselves to terminate pregnancies, as birth control isn’t available, or abortion isn’t legal or available to them.
