I was born on November 8, 1883. The first days I can remember were those spent at Waikiki Beach, where, with hundreds of native boys, I swam and dove a greater part of the time. I was born at that beach, my father being a native of Cork, Ireland, and my mother part English and part Hawaiian. When I began to swim and sport in the breakers there was no standing surf-board riding. Every boy knew from the tales handed down from his father that the Hawaiians had at one time ridden the waves but then not a one of them could stand. I listened to the tales told by the boys of how their ancestors could stand on a board speeding over the water at a terrific speed. I hardly believed it at first. ¶ Not until I was nineteen and had made several trips to the United States, bathed at Atlantic City and learned a lot about water feats, did I attempt to ride a surf-board. At that age I returned to Waikiki Beach, determined to learn the lost art of surf-board riding if it was within human possibility. I took a large board, shaped it to suit my weight and started. I would get the board to riding well, then would stand up on my hands and knees, all the while guiding it with my feet. At last I was able to stand on my knees, going at full speed. My next move was to rest on one knee and one foot for short distances and was gradually able to work myself into longer distances. At last I was riding the entire length of the breaker range, a half mile, standing at full height on the board. ¶ The native boys had laughed at me when I made my first efforts. Now they hailed me as the reviver of the lost art. They all took to riding while standing at full height and today the tourist at Waikiki can see hundreds of native boys riding these boards. ¶ When I made my next trip to the United States I brought the surf-board art with me. Then not one person in this country could ride one. Today many of the life-guards on our western coast are proficient riders and can do feats that make the spectator hold his breath. Made from materials that are one step closer to making less environmentally harmful surf crafts. There is much that needs to be improved on these boards in regards to becoming truly sustainable, but by investing in these types of technologies, manufacturers can expand these divisions and produce better stuff. “Seeing wildlife suffer at the hands of consumerism and reckless disposal makes me physically sick. At the same time we are a product of our society and we have to give ourselves credit where we can. Id say the best thing for people to do is educate themselves, to not turn a blind eye, and to figure out what works for them and their lifestyles. People tend to think that its expensive or time consuming to be ocean-friendly but Ive actually noticed the opposite. The most recent approach I have taken is more of a minimalist one. It gives me a lot of peace of mind to not have too many things to keep track of anyways. Ive given away clothes that mean a lot to me but that could mean more to someone who doesnt have. (I was always taught that sacrifice/ generosity isnt about giving up what you have extra of but rather giving what you dont have to spare). So now I have clothes and swimsuits that I really love that are very durable and I dont find myself buying into fast fashion anymore. Surfed Hoek early last week with @mikeyfebruary We paddled out on the dead low and it was an absolute mess. Rips all over the place and non stop close outs. So I decided to run 2 kilometers down the beach and see if it was any better there. Skating has always been a passion of mine along with photography. I’ve been shooting my friends skating for over 10 years at this point. I first picked up a Canon Rebel SLR from a tag sale In the summer of ‘07 and would drop my film off at the local drugstore to be developed. Shortly after that summer I bought a Nikon D40 and shot only digital photos for years, it’s only recently that a photography teacher encouraged me to go back to shooting film, developing and processing everything myself. It was pouring rain. Most people would call this a “miserable” day - except these ecstatic surfers. As we walked the beach it was amazing to see the locals charging into the surf, all eager to catch a wave. Last weekend @sophiedouglasssss and I went to Tofino for the first time. During our time there, it was apparent that this community is brought together by their shared love of the ocean. Tofino is a magical place, I can’t wait to go back to experience more of this coastal lifestyle. - @kyle.roepke on Instagram

@wallington89 up north a few years ago. I think it was 2011. I was on crutches with a broken ankle. I intended on shooting from the beach but decided to swim out after seeing 20 other guys shooting from land. I ruined my fisheye port about 30 mins in, maybe 5 mins before this pic was taken. Got tossed while shooting a sequence of @vinceboulanger on a really nice right. My water housing slipped outta my hands and hit the bottom which was covered in little shells and rocks. Completely destroying my port. If you look close towards the bottom of the pic you can see some heavy scratches and scuff marks. In January of 2001 I went to Europe to kick off the winter and filming with @gigiruf and @rdmyes for a film titled Transcendence and also to meet a Norwegian-American youngster that Romain was wanting me to connect with. His name was and still is Jan Peter (Yawn-Petter) Solberg and his style stood out instantly. Back then I was mostly filming with my custom overcranked arriflex set up but also still shooting some photos and was in love with a black and white positive film called Polapan. Let’s just say the developing process for this film was one of a kind and it gave an almost unfair advantage. To this day most of my favorite still images that I’ve shot were collected onto that very unique emulsion. I snapped this one of @soulburger for the movie cover that year and aside from capturing a scoche of his style, my favorite thing about this image is @gorgzilla aka Ingemar Backman rolling down the highway filming JP. My least favorite part of this photo is that it’s a scene that wasn’t in the movie. At that moment I had to choose; still photo or motion because you can’t do both simultaneously at your highest level. At least I can’t. Twenty years later I still feel good about my choice and JP’s debut ender has become iconic for reasons other than this road gap just up the pass from Livigno, Italy. A trip we will never forget. The Boys. The Road. The Pandemic. A whole lot VB’s. Took off on March 12th, with a solid crew, to road trip the North and South islands of New Zealand, hoping to escape reality for a month, surf our brains out, visit Hobbiton, white water raft, see the Milford Sound, surf more & the list goes on. _________________________ While we were able to escape reality for a bit, surf some rarely uncrowded Raglan, see the country and beaches of the Northland and explore the city life in Auckland, the pandemic eventually caught up with us (and NZ) forcing us to do our part, isolate and cut the trip short. _________________________ We checked off a lot of beautiful places and bookmarked a lot more, hopefully for a 2021 New Zealand trip round ✌🏼. _________________________ @_captainjackk captured this first photo of me, surfing Raglan on my dads retro Merrick single fin.
