Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies arrested KPCC/LAist Correspondent Josie Huang late Saturday while she was covering the ambush shooting of two deputies in Compton. SWIPE FOR VIDEO Even as she was being thrown to the ground, Huang — who was wearing a lanyard with her press credential hanging from her neck — was recording the encounter. In video that continued to film after her phone was knocked from her hand, Huang can be heard repeatedly identifying herself as a reporter and shouting “KPCC” several times. You also can hear Huang yelling youre hurting me and crying out in pain. The incident occurred outside St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where the two deputies were being treated for gunshot wounds. Huang had just finished covering a 10 p.m. news conference by Sheriff Alex Villanueva and other department officials. We hope the two sheriff injured deputies shot Saturday evening make full recoveries. And understand that these are challenging and stressful times for everyone. Almost exactly two years ago, I was arrested at the Capitol protesting President Trumps nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court—one sexual abuser giving another a lifetime job, with the power to rule over our workplaces, our environment, our bodies. We got on the bus at 4am that morning and gathered in D.C. at a church, where we were fed by members of the community and prepped for direct action by movement vets. Then we pulled our bikes off the bus and rode to the Hart Senate building. At the Capitol, I met people from all over the country, of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone was generous and kind and wanted to share their stories of what had brought them. Many were women who had traumas not so different than my own. When we were arrested, we were taken to the basement of the Senate building and put on a bus. For the next few hours, I sat next to women in jail, sharing our stories and our vision for a more loving world. I was so inspired and so relieved to find that I was not alone ut part of an enormous movement of women who had found their power and their voice. The next day, on the bus back home, I felt changed. I came to profoundly understand, deep in my heart, that for all the power they had—and they did win that fight—we have it too. Now, two years later, fresh off of threatening a coup, our racist tax cheat president and his party of corporate mercenaries are planning to push through the confirmation of a new justice who will gut healthcare, empower bosses, entrench private power and overturn Roe vs. Wade. We need to push the Democratic leadership in the Senate to pull out all the stops—before and during the confirmation process, and when, hopefully, the party retakes power in January. That includes expanding the number of justices, just as FDR threatened to do when the Supreme Court tried to dismantle the New Deal.
