Fantastic image by @conrad_bizjak_photography 🦀 🦀 🦀 It is NOT ok to harvest these iconic Australian animals en masse when they come into the shallows for ‘safety in numbers’ to moult their shells like ‘shooting fish in a bucket’. Over the space of several hours of intensive targeting, almost all of these small, meatless crabs were taken with very few allowed to complete their moulting process. The crabbing practices that have emerged in the past two years have also caused significant environmental damage and increased risk to the dozens of observers in the water at any given time who have flocked to the peninsula for many years to witness this natural spectacle. We strongly advocate for a ‘No-Take’ Season during these annual moulting aggregations to allow this natural phenomenon to continue to be observed as a long-standing tradition in Australia’s beautiful Port Phillip Bay. We urge that the law be changed to preserve this important part of Mornington Peninsula’s spectacular wildlife celebration for generations to come. Jaiba mora (Homalaspis plana) La hermosa jaiba mora tiene el caparazón liso de color violeta, con algunas manchas amarillas. Desde Ecuador hasta Magallanes, estas jaibas se encuentran en el intermareal, pudiendo vivir hasta los 272 metros de profundidad. Son oportunistas, es decir, se alimentan de lo que van encontrando, a veces comen restos de animales muertos y otras veces cazan animales pequeños. Si bien los machos son más grandes y tienen pinzas de mayor tamaño, son las hembras quienes cargan los huevos después de la fecundación, y no crean que llevan un par de huevitos solo...no, ¡una sola hembra de 11 cm puede llevar en su cuerpo hasta 440.000 huevos! Superpoder que ayudó a determinar veda permanente en todo el país para las todas las hembras. HABITANTES DA ILHA. . . 🍃 Caranguejo Goiá: Caranguejos são os crustáceos da infraordem Brachyura, caracterizados por terem o corpo totalmente protegido por uma carapaça, cinco pares de patas (pereópodes) terminadas em unhas pontudas, o primeiro dos quais normalmente transformado em fortes pinças e, o abdômen reduzido e dobrado por baixo do cefalotórax. Geralmente, caranguejos se reproduzem de maneira sexuada. Algumas fêmeas desse grupo liberam sinais químicos na água para atrair os machos, que disputam quem é o mais forte, num processo denominado corte. As fêmeas produzem facilmente entre 300 mil e 700 mil ovos.
