Last week @keiramary_ and I did a temporary swap with a few pieces of clothing. I just wanted to promote borrowing instead of buying. But the experience turned into something we both enjoyed more than we anticipated! We got that dopamine hit and excitement you get from a new piece of clothing. And we got to experiment and push ourselves out of our comfort zone. Keira didn’t think denim jackets were for her and now she’s on the hunt for a sustainable one. I hated playsuits but now I would totally buy one. So convenient for getting dressed and riding the motorbike! Thank you to those of you who have already put in your orders for our wool comforters, mattress pads and pillows. For those of you still on the fence, or those of you who dont know our farm intimately yet, I wanted to take a moment to share what sets us apart and why invest in one of our wool products. 1. We are improving our environment At Henny Penny we practice regenerative agriculture, a term coined to describe farming that works to restore topsoils biological activity and vitality. What this means is we are able to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, absorb more water and reduce water runoff during our extreme weather events, and support an enormous range of microorganisms below the soil and wildlife above the soil. We graze on Conservation Land in our town and our sheep improve this land year after year. And, not surprisingly, the ways of supporting soil life also support the health and well-being of our sheep. 2. We are teaching the next generation Henny Penny hosts summer camps and after school programs that show kids, hands-on, what it means to raise livestock responsibly, with respect and with an equal weight on their natural environment. We also run summer and year-long internships. Over the years many college-aged kids have spent extended time at the farm, learning the principles of regenerative and sustainable agriculture. Some of them have gone on to study in environmental fields others have taken away their experience and knowledge to influence their ongoing food decisions and educate others. 3. We Know Wool There is a purpose for every type of wool. Farmer Whitney has spent a lifetime learning the nuances of wool, constantly learning from experts in their field of wool use or wool production. It takes both science and art to produce each one of our wool products. Whitney chooses the right fleeces from our flock for the right project. And the proof, indeed, is in the product. Our products reflect their hand crafted nature, but by no means do they look homemade. When I was younger I had this thing about the number 27. It just popped up for me everywhere. I thought it was just so “dreamy” and I was convinced I didn’t want to get any older than 27 years. Well here I am at my last day of 27 years old, and I can tell you I don’t have that notion at all anymore. I’m not afraid of death one bit; and with how wearying the world is, sometimes I just want to see my Father in Heaven & rest. But, my friend, Life’s too precious a gift to desire a thing like dying young. I weep for the babies who never got the chance to live out their full lives. For the children taken home much too young. For the people with so much life left in their spirits before they were welcomed into eternity. In my devotion, I have found my freedom. Yall, a few years ago I would have looked at the word discipline and RAN away. I have always been a free spirit who told herself that discipline kept me unlimited in my life. I used to see discipline as a way to stifle my creativity, my expression and my way of living. Then I changed my perception of what discipline is. Instead of looking at the word discipline I started reframing it as my devotion. Instead of saying to myself “ Ugh, I HAVE to do this thing for my business” I started saying “ It is a privilege to show up to this work.” Instead of saying “It’s so difficult to do breathwork and visualization each and every day”, I started viewing it as the very thing that would take me to my next level of business. Instead of looking at my morning energetic rituals as being difficult to maintain, I looked at them as a welcome friend to guide me where I need to go in every given moment. The way we frame our language informs our reality. Mind your language, mind your power. Reframing discipline to devotion has also helped me show up with the long game in mind. I used to be someone who rushed through projects and commitments just to get to the next thing. I wanted to “get through” my tasks so I could be done with the “hard things” I’m not motivated anymore by quick fixes or rushing a project to get done. I’m not motivated by spending 10 hours behind my computer everyday to get to the “next level” of anything. I’m motivated by committing to my daily business and wellness practices that provide a framework to keep me supported always. There isn’t some arbitrary moment in the future that will make me feel secure, it’s what I’m doing everyday that will. My rituals and my commitments everyday, every cycle, every season are what give me a framework for living this beautiful life. They are what have led me to so much abundance and deep inner trust. It’s been the most beautiful spring & early summer this year, which makes it an even more frustrating time for couples who were hoping to get married over this period. Life has its challenges & Covid-19 is certainly one of them. Let’s take a deep breath & take some positives out of all this. There has been time for reflection, time to do all those little tasks which never get done. There has been saved time, no evenings out & commuting. So much less to-ing & fro-ing & running from one appointment to another. Instead of all that, there has been time as never before to enjoy our incredibly beautiful spring & early summer. We’re all in this together & if we can work through it together, hopefully we can meet the challenges this pandemic has thrown at us all.
