About VICTOR EKPUK: Victor Ekpuk is a Nigerian-American artist based in Washington, DC. Guided by the aesthetic philosophy nsibidi, where sign systems are used to convey ideas, Ekpuk re-imagines graphic symbols from diverse cultures to form a personal style of mark making that results in the interplay of art and writing. I was recently commissioned by @canned_beets to create some artwork for their upcoming album. Check them out, theyve got some groovy tunes. I made this by creating the scene in a 3d program and then applying a 5 color halftone using a custom grown fractal pattern. My favorite part of this image is that the yellow in the leaf is the exact same yellow as in the record label but looks totally different, swipe to see the closeups. Color theory rocks! Really miss music today. Really sad I didn’t get to promote this album the way I wanted to. I wrote a lot about the pain, suffering and abuse I was experiencing from ages 18-23. Part of me thought I could release this album and feel relief, but instead it still feels pent up in a way because of how this year has been. Opening today, July 16. • ‘Asger Jorn, the great Danish artist and mastermind of the CoBrA movement, always had a zinger up his sleeve. He famously sent a mordant telegram to Harry F. Guggenheim, refusing the Guggenheim Prize with a single sentence: “Go to hell with your money, Bastard!” Jorn titled one of his most famous modifications—his term for painting on top of anonymous thrift store canvases—The Avant Garde Won’t Give Up. And in speaking about the voracious cultural consumption required of the creative act, he declared, “Painting is painting’s favorite food,” encapsulating the vital role that art history plays in most artists’ practice. Jorn’s quip serves as both inspiration and exposition for Painting is Painting’s Favorite Food: Art History as Muse, the debut presentation at South Etna Montauk, opening July 16, 2020 in the Village of Montauk on the East End of Long Island. Curated by Alison M. Titans of Creation, 2020. I was asked if I had an interesting idea for the new TESTAMENT album cover before there were any lyrics or a title. Humanity was always obsessed with recurring forms in nature, like how some patterns on a leaf looked like a lightning bolt or the human nerve system, or the connection between celestial movements and events on earth. Myths and folklore were created in order to explain even the simplest of natural occurrences, like the weather, seasons or night making way to the day. So, I came up with our own new mythology to symbolize how the Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen atoms in our bodies originated in previous generations of long gone dead stars, and how these elements combine to form the nucleotides in our DNA. So, for the cover I came up with a place where ancient deities are forming both men and planets. They pour the atoms and pound them with their hammers, creating a spiral staircase of the human DNA, from which the planetary rings of a new-born planet are also born. The fire in the deities’ chest are the dying stars, as us humans are all made of their ashes. The album was later on named after the cover. This shows how much this album was a collaborative effort with everyone contributing—I even helped naming the album. In late January, when hospitals in the United States confirmed the presence of the novel #coronavirus, health workers knew to watch for precisely three symptoms: fever, cough, and shortness of breath. But as the number of infections climbed, the symptom list began to grow. Some patients lost their sense of smell and taste. Some had nausea or diarrhea. Some had arrhythmias or even heart attacks. Some had damaged kidneys or livers. Some had headaches, blood clots, rashes, swelling, or strokes. Many had no symptoms at all. . When UCSF researchers tested people for SARS-CoV-2 in San Francisco’s Mission District, 53% of those infected never had any symptoms. “That’s much higher than expected,” says Monica Gandhi, MD, MPH, a UCSF professor of medicine with expertise in HIV. Surveys of outbreaks in nursing homes and prisons show similar or even higher numbers. “If we did a mass testing campaign on 300 million Americans right now, I think the rate of asymptomatic infection would be somewhere between 50% and 80% of cases,” Gandhi says. Millions of people may be spreading the virus without knowing it, she points out, making asymptomatic transmission the Achilles’ heel of efforts to control the pandemic – and highlighting the importance of universal masking. .
