Australia is currently on fire and nobody seems to care. These are the effects of climate change in action - right here, right now. We are getting no help from international aid. Hell, we aren’t even making international news. Bushfires are destroying communities and ecosystems at a rate which has gone far beyond alarming, taking wildlife and fauna along with it. We have lost 950,000 hectares of bush and nobody is doing anything. That’s more than the damage caused by the Amazon bushfires - and it will only get worse from here. Even the PRIME MINISTER couldn’t give less of a shit unless the bushfires get to one of his precious coal mines. Until then all he is willing to do is hand out thoughts and prayers like a lady at the school office handing you a uniform slip for having a tick on your socks. At least I can wipe my ass with one of those things. NSW and QLD are suffering the most, although there are bushfires rampant in every state. 3 people and 350 koalas as well as countless other wildlife are now DEAD. These fires are STILL active and burning away our country. The language we use (or don’t use), the context we give (or don’t give), the voices we let speak (or those we silence), and the stories we tell (or don’t tell) convey meaning to listeners. When choosing the language you use in the travel and tourism context, you must take responsibility for: ✔Travelers who you include and exclude. ✔Local people who you include, exclude, and misrepresent. ✔How that language dismantles or perpetuates clichés and stereotypes. ✔How cultural nuances are interpreted. ✔How you signal intention and bias. ✔Alternative interpretations of terminology. ✔The message you convey. Travel has long been an elitist activity driven by a colonial mindset. This means those who can travel do so in comfort, usually surrounded by stories confirming their view of the world. This also means many stories are silenced. History is sanitized and culture is crushed because it doesn’t fit the dominant narrative. The world is starting to wake up to the importance of elevating and amplifying stories that haven’t traditionally been part of the travel space. These stories may feel messy, complicated, and uncomfortable. But they are also essential. 💫They help people find that shared sense of humanity amidst chaos. 💫They celebrate people and history that can teach us important lessons in our daily lives. 💫They begin to dismantle a long history of oppression and racism. I took this photo before hiking the 211-mile John Muir Trail several years ago. At the time, I didn’t realize its Indigenous name is Nüümü Poyo (“People’s Trail”) and that the Paiute, Shoshone, and other tribes used and maintained it. This is a story I’m just starting to learn as I read more about John Muir’s racism while also seeking out information about Indigenous people who have lived here for generations. 📍Refugee Cove, Cape Chignecto. 50km in three days and two nights. Absolutely perfect weather with the best crew! Had the pleasure of seeing a diversity of wildlife and plants including a bear cub, porcupine, a tiger swallowtail butterfly, and what I believe to be a cormorant drying its wings in the sun ☀️ Perhaps the most fun was watching as many as five seals frolic and swim in the sunshine right at the tip of Cape Chignecto. Hundreds of bunch berries in bloom lined the paths, as well as some spotting of blue flag irises, beach peas, wild strawberries in flower, and starflowers. Literalmente estaba parado en un pedacito que hay plano en la cima del cráter del volcán del Nyirangongo, en ese pedacito a uno se le resbala el pie y va a dar al cráter a unos 450 metros de caída libre. Esta foto la tomamos después de grabar unas presentaciones y aunque el cráter se ve cerca y uno piensa que hace calor, pueden ver lo abrigado to que estaba, el frío lo saca a uno corriendo rapidito a meterse a su bolsa de dormir. With burning conditions not as severe as seen in nights prior, fire crews have maintained the fire lines of the Walbridge Fire along Sweetwater Springs Road. However, the Stewarts fire will be allowed to burn into the #WalbridgeFire in order for @calfire to better allocate resources across the area, according to CalFire Division Chief Ben Nicholls. Even though the Meyers Fire grew in size overnight to 3,000 acres, Nicholls said it is looking much better. Crews were able to hold the #MeyersFire west of Meyers Grade Road and it is currently south of Fort Ross Road and is in a confined area. Jamie Gagne has a penis statue in his yard. • The Montreal-born man says he first carved the 2.1-metre tall anatomically correct statue in June and put it in his front yard to protest the bureaucratic red tape that was preventing him from getting a permit to complete a shed outside his home in Wilton, N.Y. • [The town] stopped communicating with me, so I was getting a little frustrated, and I kind of wanted to draw their attention and kind of brute force a conversation, Gagne told As It Happens host Carol Off. • Gagne is a woodworker and a carpenter by trade. Its my first chainsaw carving, actually, he said. I dont know. It kind of came naturally. • He says hes quite proud of his penis, which he describes as having the the proper mushroom curvature on the tip and balls [that] are properly sack-like. • However, his statue raised some concern. A pair of state troopers arrested Gagne on a charge of displaying offensive sexual material. He pleaded not guilty in court on Tuesday, and is fighting to have the charges dismissed. • New York State Police confirmed the arrest and said it came after Gange was given a warning to remove the statue from public view. The Town of Wilton did not respond to a request for comment. • In the meantime, Gagnes moved the penis to his backyard. • Really, I just want to finish building my workshop. I am a member of StopPlasticstoronto but I also belong to a local walking group so I decided to incorporate the two! When walking in local parks and ravines I carry my grabbers and a bag and cleanup what I can. This mess was the result of only four walks and I could have picked up much, much more but my bag filled quickly. And then it hit me...I cannot take responsibility for all of this plastic waste. I took Stopplastics challenge to pick up plastic beverage bottles and caps and look what I found! It was shocking how little time it took to collect 2 bags full of plastic bottles...they are everywhere. I picked these up in central Etobicoke in my local playground and it’s parking lot in no time at all. Why are we buying water in plastic bottles and why are we just tossing them wherever? Ante tanta demanda de vecinos enviándonos imágenes de como esta su barrio, sus calles, sus parques y jardines etc etc .... desde Almería Postureo y terminada una reunión ahora mismo, hemos decidido formar grupos de 10 personas para limpiar todos los monumentos, parques, zonas de ocio y zonas de juegos de nuestra ciudad. Mañana queremos hablar con distintas empresas para que nos cedan elementos y aparatos de limpieza y así colaborar los almerienses para tener su ciudad limpia y cuidada ya que parece que nadie lo hace. Esta claro y siempre lo decimos que el ser humano mancha y ensucia mucho, pero por eso hay que tener un equipo de limpieza para dar soluciones a tantos problemas. Aprovechamos para hacer ese llamamiento a ferreterías, viveros, etc etc para que nos donen equipos de limpieza como escobas, bolsas, guantes, recogedores, semillas para plantar plantas y arboles en tantos parques abandonados como el boticario donde posiblemente comenzaremos etc etc ... Sin más muchísimas gracias a todos los que nos habéis aportado ideas, como siempre decimos sois todos bienvenidos y además os esperamos de corazón para que estéis con nosotros codo con codo limpiando la ciudad. The outdoors is NOT your dumpster. . Feeling so disheartened lately. Which is difficult to even put into words. For many of us, the outdoors is a special place. A place where amongst so much change and uncertainty it provides support and mental stability. A place that will always be there when you need it. A feeling of home. But a place that isn’t ours. . I’ve been cleaning the trails for a few years now and this is the worst I’ve seen em. We all deserve the opportunity to be in these beautiful places, but you need to educate yourself before heading out. We should all know, if there’s no trash can, the ground is not where it goes. The media is encouraging everyone to get outside, causing overpopulated areas and trashed trails. No one wants to clean up after you, especially your own waste. Just as much as you don’t want to pack it out, no one wants to smell it let alone see it. . Masks. Wipes. Food. Wrappers. Peels. Toilet Paper. Dog Poop. Your poop. Bottles. ITS ALL TRASH and doesn’t deserve to be on the trail. . Climate crisis is in full affect. Organizing the gear my van some today and took this picture of some of my gear. I have heard about these rock climbing rack pictures, so I thought this was a good opportunity to show what a caving rack is like. This includes multiple single rope technique vertical kits, cave suits, under suits of different types, boots, lights, heltmet, lots of low stretch and static rope of various types, bolting equipment, a double set of aid climbing equipment for multi-pitch underground lead climbing, packs of all different sizes, camp kit, survey gear, etc. Theres also a small amount of normal climbing gear mixed in for going climbing at the local crags.
