This morning I watched a press conference from a canning redemption center called @surewecannyc in Brooklyn, which got an eviction notice just before the pandemic. This is one of the places where bottle + can collectors trade their loads for the refundable deposits, except this one is a nonprofit that also serves as a community center. . Sure We Can is at risk of losing its 14,000 sqft lot — which takes 11 million bottles and cans out of the wastestream and put $700,000 back into the community, according to a founder — if they can’t secure a $2.3 million nonprofit capital funds grant from the city council before the budget is settled at the end of this week. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. It’s a joke, it’s a further demonization of people who are already down.” . Last year I wrote a story for NYT about how street vendors were also fighting the city for dignity in their profession, yet another flexible, low-barrier-to-entry business available to the most vulnerable people in society. One woman told me that as long as she could vend, she knew she could put money in her pocket. She didn’t have to wait for somebody to hire her, a black woman, an immigrant from Africa with an accent. The Australian government has failed to meet important commitments to protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and Indigenous peoples, Human Rights Watch said today in a submission to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The first of the 2020 presidential debates between President Trump and his opponent Joe Biden took place today, leaving the entire planet now contemplating their faith in the future of human civilisation. The death rattle of democracy featured a chaotic series of extremely personal exchanges and name-calling between the two nominees, as the collapse of late stage capitalism reared its ugly head for all to see. Throughout the 90 minute debate, Trump repeatedly spoke over his Democratic rival, leaving Biden with no choice but to tell The President to ‘shut up, man’ several times. The exhausted moderator, Chris Wallace of Fox News struggled to maintain control as he led the candidates to topics like the Supreme Court, the economy, the coronavirus pandemic and more. To no avail, Wallace also repeatedly reprimanded the President for speaking over his opponent and disregarding the rules both sides had agreed to. This has left the American people will no option but to bring in the big guns moving forward. The only man capable of successfully maintaining control of such a low brow debate. Jerry Springer. Debuting on American TV screens in 1991, The Jerry Springer Show was unsuccessful in ratings and audience engagement in its first seasons due to its focus on core political issues – much like the American elections of yesteryear. And much like the 2016 and 2020 Presidential campaigns, the talkshow underwent an overhaul of the structure which by the mid-1990’s led to a show filled with controversial topics – such as sexual taboo and adultery, profanity, domestic disputes and culture war debates. Also similar to American politics, many of their nation’s community leaders have condemned The Jerry Springer Show as “trash TV”. However despite such criticisms, the show remained popular until the end of it’s 26-year-run in in 2018. After nearly two years in retirement, Jerry Springer will return to adjudicating low brow arguments in the next two presidential debates on October 15 and 22 in Miami, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee, respectively. @sfchronicle has published an article from Phil Matier with the clickbait headline: Shopping in SFs Tenderloin is wide open- for illegal drugs, that is Mr. Matier goes on to site @sfdph statistics, explaining that drug overdoses are a public health crisis, which is certainly accurate.   He then makes an effort to convince his readers that more enforcement of street level drug sales crime and lengthier prison sentences for those convicted as the answer to the public health crisis directly impacting the least privileged and empowered in our city.   He takes little time to inform us of who is responsible for the supply side of this equation, other than to tell us they are Honduran criminals who live in Oakland.  This sentence from Mr. Matier is nakedly racist, anti-immigrant, and lazy journalism.  He also quotes our newly elected DA, @chesaboudin, who paints a more complex picture without low hanging fruit solutions, although Mr. Matier chooses not to delve into these complexities in his editorializing. The new driving license will have an advanced microchip with features like Quick Response (QR) code and Near Field Communication (NFC). The new DL will also help the government in maintaining records of differently abled drivers, changes done to the vehicles and the person’s declaration to donate organs. As for RCs, the government is set to make this process paperless from October 1. A pillar in the Chapel Hill community and local education system recently passed away after a century of life. Euzelle P. Smith died on Saturday, September 19, according to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools system. She was 101 years old. Smith and her husband, R.D. Smith, moved to the Northside neighborhood in the early 1940s from Virginia. After marrying in 1943, R.D. got Euzelle a job working in the education system, teaching at the Orange County Training School and eventually Lincoln High School. She taught through the integration of CHCCS schools in the 1960s, eventually becoming a guidance counselor for the district in 1968. She retired after nearly 40 years of work in the education system in 1981. Due to Covid, students’ A-Level and GCSE results this year will be based on their past performance and teachers’ predictions, but also “statistically adjusted” based on their school’s past results. This has resulted in 37% of A-level students having their results downgraded compared to their predicted grades. Unsurprisingly, working-class students were disproportionately impacted. In Scotland public pressure forced the authorities to abandon this model and accept teachers predictions. We need to take action to force them to do the same here! It’s true: 1 in 1,000 Black Americans have died in the Covid-19 pandemic. “If Trump doesn’t do something quickly, by the end of the year,” Biden said in the first #presidentialdebate, “1 in 500 [Black Americans] will have been killed” — a number that appears to reflect the estimates that the US death toll could grow to 400,000 by January 1. Former Vice President Joe Biden cited these horrific statistics during a discussion on race in America to punctuate his case that President Trump hasn’t been good for Black Americans: “You have to look at what [Trump] did, and what he did has been disastrous for the African American community.” It’s no secret that race, place, income, and health are inextricably linked. As Vox’s Dylan Scott explains, the health consequences of these inequities have been especially evident during the pandemic: • Black Americans have disproportionately higher rates of preexisting conditions, including heart disease and cancer, which are associated with more deaths and hospitalizations from Covid-19. • Black Americans are also more likely to work in jobs that are considered “essential,” which requires them to go into work and risk exposure to the coronavirus. • Housing segregation has also led to Black Americans having less access to clean water, and created many longstanding health disparities. At least 944,114 Americans had voted in this years US presidential election as of Sunday, according to data collected by Michael McDonald, a University of Florida professor who runs the US Election Project. McDonald estimated that fewer than 10,000 people had voted at the same point in the 2016 election cycle. McDonalds 2020 voting statistics came from early-voting data from 25 states. He said the true number of people who had voted might be higher because not every state released complete early-voting data.
